Lecture Outline
A. Introduction
1. The short-term tactical decisions that managers make require
relevant and timely accounting information.
2. Relevant costs are costs that differ among alternatives—that is,
costs that are avoidable or that can be eliminated by choosing one
alternative over another.
3. Sunk costs are not relevant in decisions as they are already
incurred. Future costs that do not differ among alternatives are also
not relevant because they cannot be eliminated by choosing one
alternative over another. However, opportunity costs are relevant in
decision making.
7-2
Instructor’s Manual
Key Concept
The price of a special order must be higher than the additional variable costs
plus any opportunity costs incurred in accepting the special order.
7-3
Instructor’s Manual
Key Concept
A product should continue to be made internally if the avoidable costs are
less than the additional costs that will be incurred by buying or outsourcing.
Making it Real
7-4
Instructor’s Manual
Key Concept
A product should be dropped when the fixed costs that are avoided exceed
the contribution margin that is lost.
Key Concept
When faced with a limited resource, a company will maximize profit by making
the product with the highest contribution margin per unit of the limited resource.
7-5
Instructor’s Manual
identified, management must focus its time and resources on relieving the
bottleneck.
Key Concept
Bottlenecks must be identified and managed if a business is to be successful in
overcoming constraints.
Key Concept
A product should be processed further if the additional (incremental) revenue
exceeds the additional (incremental) cost of processing.
End-of-Chapter Material
Brief exercises, exercises, problems, and cases based on different learning
objectives have been provided at the end of the chapter. These-end-of chapter
materials will facilitate better understanding of the concepts discussed in this
chapter. Exercise 12 deals with outsourcing decision. Problem 22 highlights the
role of qualitative factors in special order decisions.

'Pitääkö kauhtana lämpimänsä?' Sellainen häpeä
kaupungillemme!… Siitä saatte vastata!"
"Erotkaa!"
"Poikanne?"
"Ei ole tapani peljätä", virkkoi toinen ylväästi. "Koska minun pitää
lähteä?"
"En."
Pureva
tuuli alkoi puhaltaa. Csalanos-lammikon takaa kuului etäistä tohinaa
ja melua: tatarien leirielämän kohua.
"On hyvä, että olette tullut hevosen selästä, sillä minä aijon heti
nousta satulaan. Tulkaa tänne muurin suojaan, mutta heti, ja
antakaa minulle viitta."
"Oletko mieletön?"
Maks vastustelihe.
Czinna kääntyi.
Beg Olaj katseli nyt viitan selkäpuolta. Sitten hän hyppäsi
satulasta, heittäytyi Czinnan eteen maahan ja suuteli kolmesti viitan
lievettä. Czinna tuijotti häneen suurilla mustilla silmillään, hän luuli
uneksivansa.
7.
"Älä lorua!"
"Todellakin!"
"Kun Olaj beg sen näki, hyppäsi hän satulasta, suuteli sen lievettä
kolme kertaa ja kysyi hyvin nöyrästi, mitä minä suvaitsin käskeä.
Minä tietysti käskin heidän heti poistua seudulta. He noudattivatkin
määräystä ja lähtivät."
Hänen hämiänsä kesti toki vain tuokion; hän oli vanha, ovela kettu,
joka osasi helposti päästä aseman herraksi.
