Speed-time graphs

Question 1:

The speed-time graph for a car travelling between two sets of traffic lights is shown below.

(a) Work out the distance covered by the car.

(b) Calculate the average speed of the car.
(c) What is the acceleration of the car?

Question 2:

The speed-time graph shows the speed of a car for the first 10 seconds of a journey.

After the first 10 seconds the car maintains its speed for 20 seconds. It then decelerates at a
constant rate and stops after a further 15 seconds.

(a) Complete the speed-time graph for the journey of the car.

(b) Determine the distance travelled by the car.

(c) Calculate the average speed of the car for the whole journey.

Question 3:

At 12:00, a train is travelling at 60km/h. It maintains this speed for 15 minutes and then begins to
decelerate at a constant rate for 5 minutes until reaches a speed of 30km/h. It then maintains this
speed for a further 20 minutes.

(a) Draw a speed-time graph for the motion of the train.

(b) What is the deceleration of the train?

(c) What is the distance travelled before the train reaches 30km/h.

Question 4:

The speeds of a bus travelling on a straight road are given below at successive intervals of 1
second.

(b) Choose two of the following terms which describe the acceleration of the bus:
Constant Changing Positive Negative
(c) Calculate the acceleration of the bus.
(d) How far does the bus travel in 4s?

Question 5:

A girl rides her skateboard in a park. The graph below shows how her speed varies over a period
of time.

OD = 3m/s

OA = 20s

AB = 16s

BC = 14s

Calculate:

(a) The speed of the girl at time A,

(b) Her acceleration in time interval OA,
(c) The distance she travels in time interval AB. Show your working.
(d) The distance she travels in time interval BC. Show your working.
