SAFETY SUMMARY
This entire manual must be read and understood before installation.
INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS:
Adherence to the following will aid in problem-free installation with long-term reliability.

Several different sources of power can be connected to this fire alarm control unit.
Disconnect all sources of power before servicing. Control panel and associated
equipment may be damaged by servicing while the unit is energized. Do not
WARNING attempt to install, service, or operate this control panel until this manual has
been read and understood.

System Re-acceptance Test after Re-Programming: To ensure proper system

operation, this system must be retested in accordance with Chapter 4 of this manual
after any programming change. Re-acceptance testing is also required after any
addition or deletion of system components, and after any modification, repair or
CAUTION adjustment to system hardware or wiring.
All components, circuits and system operations known to be affected by a change
must be 100% tested.

For environmental limits and other specification information, see Chapter 2.

Follow the instructions in this manual. These instructions must be followed to avoid damage to the control
panel and associated equipment. System operation and reliability depend upon proper installation.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEM LIMITATIONS

While installing a fire alarm system may make lower insurance rates possible, it is not a
substitute for fire insurance!
An automatic fire alarm system — typically made up of heat detectors, manual pull stations, notification
capability, and a fire alarm control unit — can provide early warning of a developing fire. Such a system,
however, does not assure protection against property damage or loss of life resulting from a fire.
Any fire alarm system may fail for a variety of reasons:
• Notification device will not alert people if these appliances are located on the other side of closed or
partly open doors or are located on another level of a vehicle.
• A fire alarm system will not operate without electrical power. If vehicle-supplied power fails, the
system will operate from standby batteries only for a limited time.
• The Infrared Detector must be used in conjunction with thermal heat detection, to comply with FM
Global Operating Standard 7-40, Heavy Duty Mobile Equipment.
• Auxiliary Equipment used in the system may not be technically compatible with the control panel. It
is essential to use only equipment listed for service with your control unit.
• The most common cause of fire alarm malfunctions is inadequate maintenance. All devices and
system wiring should be tested and maintained by professional fire alarm installers following written
procedures supplied with each device. System inspection and testing should be scheduled monthly or
as required by national and/or local fire codes. Adequate written records of all inspections should be
kept.

P/N 83-132550-000 iii April 2022

GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES
The following must be observed to maintain personnel safety:
The following general safety notices supplement specific warnings and cautions appearing in the manual.
The safety precautions in this section must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance.
This manual is to be used by trained distributors/technicians. The entire manual should be read and fully
understood prior to installation.
1. Any injury, no matter how slight, should never go unattended. Always obtain first aid or medical
attention immediately.
2. Special precautionary measures are essential to prevent applying power to equipment at any time
maintenance work is in progress.
3. Before working on electrical equipment, use a voltmeter to ensure that the system is not energized.
4. When working near electricity, do not use metal rulers, flashlights, metallic pencils, or any other
objects having exposed conductive material.
5. When connecting a meter to terminals for measurement, use a voltage range higher than the expected
voltage to be measured.

General Warnings and Cautions

Never dispose of a pressurized cylinder. Cylinders must be disposed of properly,

and in conjunction with local ordinance. A safety cap must be attached to the
cylinder at all times, except when the cylinder is installed on the system. If the
WARNING safety seal bursts while the safety cap is removed, an unrestrained cylinder
may cause property damage, severe personal injury, and possibly death.

1-2.2 Detection

The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 System can use heat detectors and/or flame detectors for
automatic fire detection. Two types of heat detection are available, a spot-type detector
(Detect-A-Fire) or continuous line type (LHS). Flame detection is accomplished by a dual-
spectrum infrared sensor located within the Infrared Detector (IR-1A).

1-2.3 Actuation

Manual operation of the suppression system can be accomplished electrically and/or

pneumatically depending on the system configuration. Electric actuation is accomplished by
initiating the Electric Manual Release. Pneumatic actuation can be accomplished by initiating
the Mechanical Actuator or the Remote System Actuator.

P/N 83-132550-000 1-3 April 2022

General Information

1-2.4 Suppression

The Sentinel SA1 is designed to discharge one or two fire suppression agents to suppress a
detected fire. For detailed information about the fire suppression system refer to the Envirotech
Sentinel DCS Fire Suppression System DIOM Manual (P/N 83-131550-000) and Envirotech
Sentinel LS Fire Suppression System DIOM Manual (P/N 83-130550-000).

1-2.4.1 ENVIROTECH SENTINEL DCS, FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

The Envirotech Sentinel DCS Suppression System uses dry chemical to extinguish fires. Dry
chemical is suitable for suppressing Class A, B, and C fires. During actuation, dry chemical is
discharged from its cylinder via a hose to a nozzle, or multiple nozzles. Once the dry chemical
is discharged on the fire area, the fire is suppressed.

1-2.4.2 ENVIROTECH SENTINEL LS, FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

The Sentinel LS Suppression System uses Aquagreen XT wet chemical agent to extinguish
fires. Wet chemical is suitable for suppressing Classes A and B fires. During actuation, wet
chemical is discharged from its cylinder via a hose to a nozzle, or multiple nozzles. Once the
wet chemical is discharged on the fire area, the fire is suppressed.

1-2.5 Notification

The Sentinel SA1 uses an internal buzzer to alert personnel of a potential fire condition. Once
the buzzer is activated, personnel need to employ their preplanned emergency action plan.
Protected areas can be identified by a sign that reads “THIS SPACE PROTECTED BY
ENVIROTECH SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.”

1-2.6 Auxiliary

The auxiliary function of this system provides a means to activate or deactivate other systems
or equipment, such as the vehicle engine, fans and hydraulic lines.

1-3 ENVIROTECH SENTINEL SYSTEM ACTUATION CONFIGURATIONS

The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 is capable of actuating fire suppression systems automatically,
manually, or both.
• Automatic

The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 can be actuated using automatic fire detection and control.

• Manual

The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 can manually actuate fire suppression systems electrically or
pneumatically.

Note: “Manual Only” systems may be permissible only if acceptable to the authority having

Override Yellow Indicates activation of the Override function.

2-2.2.2 USER INTERFACE SWITCHES

The Sentinel SA1 has three user interface switches. They are:
• Silence - Silences the internal buzzers. This user interface switch is also used in
conjunction with the Override user interface switch to enter the configuration mode.
• Override - Resets the Release Delay Timer to the original value and continues counting,
if engaged while in Alarm State. If system has discharged, there is no system override.
• Reset - Clears the alarm condition when circuit alarm condition is no longer present.

2-2.2.3 INTERNAL BUZZER

The Internal Buzzer will sound in several different ways when an alarm, trouble, or supervisory
condition is present. The following table lists the ways the Internal Buzzer will sound.

Table 2-4. Internal Buzzer Notifications

Type of Condition Present Sound Made

Alarm: 60 BPM
Release: Continuous
Supervisory: 30 BPM
Trouble: 15 BPM

The Sentinel SA1 includes the following components:

2-2.2.4 DETECTION CIRCUIT

The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) powered, initiating circuit for automatic alarms. The maximum
total current draw for the circuit is 180 mA. This circuit is supervised for opens and is power
limited.

P/N 83-132550-000 2-3 April 2022

Components

2-2.2.5 MANUAL RELEASE CIRCUIT

The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) initiating circuit for manual alarms. The manual release circuit
can be configured for pneumatic or electric release. If the manual release input has been
configured for pneumatic release, the manual release will not activate the release circuit. If the
manual release input has been configured for electric release, the manual release will activate
the release circuit immediately. In either configuration, a delay to the Alarm Relay may be
selected.

A manual release will disable the Override function. The circuit is supervised for opens.

2-2.2.6 SUPERVISORY CIRCUIT

The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) initiating circuit for supervisory alerts.

The Supervisory Circuit accepts inputs from monitoring devices such as pressure switches on
agent cylinders. The circuit may be used to monitor any quantity of contact closure type
switches, up to the limitation imposed by the wiring resistance.

The supervisory circuit is supervised for opens.

2-2.2.7 RELEASE CIRCUIT

The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) dedicated controlled output circuit for suppression activation.
Activation of the release circuit can be delayed from 0-60 seconds (in 15-second increments)
in automatic release mode. The release circuit can activate up to three (3) actuators, up to a
maximum cable length of 500 feet, using 18 AWG wire.

The release circuit is supervised for opens and shorts and is power limited.

2-2.2.8 ALARM RELAY

The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) alarm relay. The relay is normally in the de-energized condition
and will energize upon an alarm. When active, the alarm relay rating is: 30 VDC @ 2A.
Activation of the alarm relay may be delayed from 0-60 seconds (in 15-second increments)
upon a detection alarm, and may be configured to change state only when the system is in
alarm.

Activation of the alarm relay may be delayed from 0-30 seconds (in 15-second increments)
upon a manual release alarm, and may be configured to change state only when the system is
in alarm.

A relay delay cannot be set longer than the release delay. A relay delay can be set shorter
than the release delay. The 15-sec alarm relay delay without override is only available if the
same is first selected for the release delay.

This relay will latch upon activation and shall remain latched until the Sentinel SA1 has been
reset.

Components

2-4 DETECTION COMPONENTS

Envirotech Sentinel SA1 detection components may include any combination of the following
types of detection:
• Detect-A-Fire® (DAF) detection
• Linear Heat Sensor (LHS) cable
• Infrared detection

The maximum normal ambient temperature for Deutsch connectors is 257ºF (125ºC).

2-4.1 Detect-A-Fire

The Detect-A-Fire (DAF) is a rate-compensated, spot-type, heat detection device that provides
a rapid response to increased temperature. The sensing element consists of an outer shell and
two inner struts with contacts. At normal ambient temperatures, the struts maintain a gap
between the contacts. When the surrounding air is heated to the alarm temperature, the outer
shell expands more rapidly than the inner struts, allowing the contacts to close and signaling
an alarm condition. Upon cooling, the detector will self-restore and may be re-used.

The DAF utilizes Deutsch DTM Series 3-pin connectors for protection against water and wash-
down, and is assembled with one male and one female connector to allow chaining of multiple
detectors on a single circuit. A carbon steel mounting bracket is included with the assembly.

Components

2-4.2 Linear Heat Sensor Cable

The Envirotech Sentinel Linear Heat Sensor (LHS) Cable Detector is a fixed temperature,
linear-type, heat detection device that provides a normal response to increased temperature.
The detector consists of two parts: the LHS Cable and LHS Base.

2-4.2.1 LHS CABLE

The LHS Cable is a small diameter cable, capable of detecting heat from fire over its entire
length. The sensor cable consists of a twisted pair of 19AWG copper-coated steel conductors
covered by a temperature sensitive insulation and protected by a plastic jacket. The heat from
a fire causes the LHS Cable’s special insulation to melt at a specific temperature, allowing the
conductors to short, and signaling an alarm condition. After a fire, the entire length of cable
must be replaced.

See document K-73-201 for additional LHS cable lengths and temperature ratings.

Components

2-4.3 IR-1A Flame Detector, P/N 83-132450-000, and 83-132700-000

The Infrared Flame Detector is an optical detection device that utilizes patented technology to
recognize the radiant energy emitted by a fire. It operates by sensing two separate bands of
infrared energy. A fire signal is generated when the sensors see a fire fueled by gasoline,
diesel, hydrogen, oils (including hydraulic), lubricants, CNG, LNG, LPG, methanol, or other
fuels or combustibles. The fire sensor has a 100º solid cone field-of-view.

The fire sensor is immune to false alarms from sunlight, flashlights, lightning, vehicle
headlights, incandescent lights (100 W at 2 inches), and welding arcs (30 inches).

The detector has a green status light in the center of its front surface. The status light
illuminates when the fire sensor is powered and blinks after the detector has responded to a
fire. The blinking will continue until the control panel is reset.

The Infrared Flame Detector utilizes water-resistant construction and Deutsch DTM 3-pin
Series connectors for protection against water and wash-down. It is assembled with one male
and one female connector to allow chaining of multiple detectors on a single circuit.
