Chapter 14 Case: With Friends Like This

Managers have a role to play in ensuring they act as the source of unity within the

organization. Disputes will always arise within the workplace, but there is a need to come up

with ways to solve them without using emotions. Henceforth, it will become easier to ensure that

the definite action does not create bad relations among the employees. There is a need for the

manager to ensure that the employee’s opinions are valid and that the decisions therein are not

based on hearsay.

1. What should be your immediate response to Millie Norman? Why?

The immediate response would be to ask Millie Norman how she feels about my

management style. A clear understanding of her stand will help me understand if it is only Cathy,

who is criticizing my leadership style, or there are others. Afterward, I can carry out a research

survey aimed at understanding my leadership style. If Cathy argues that criticism is true, then it

is evident that all the employees are not happy with my leadership style. Henceforth, it also

becomes easier to determine whether there is any conflict within the workplace, especially

between Cathy and Morgan.

2. Do you believe you have the basis on which to proceed with disciplinary action against

someone? Why or why not?

I believe I have a basis to proceed with the disciplinary action because both the

employees are within my department. As the head of the department, I have the power or right to

dismiss the employees. I will play a pivotal role in determining the case, especially after finding

out that it is the truth that Cathy does not like my management style. It would have been better if

she came to my office personally rather than inciting the other employees.

3. How can the HR department help you in your present concern?

CHAPTER 14 CASE 3

A clear explanation of the case to the human resource department is essential in

determining how I deal with the case. The HR department will analyze the case closely and give

direction regarding the best way to move forward. Also, the HR department can either choose to

suspend or fire the employees, depending on how they analyze the case. It will help me in

deciding how to work with uncooperative employees.

Conclusion

Conclusively, conflict in the workplace is inevitable. There is a need to come up with a

different mechanism of dealing with this conflict, and all the responsible parties must be

involved. Organizations must pay attention to such conflict, and motivation is important in

explaining how the leaders handle their followers. The HR department acts as the neutral party

when it comes to issues dealing with employees.
