Diwali the Festival of Lights is celebrated in various parts of the world, particularly those with large populations of Hindu and Sikh origin, including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US. It is one of the most important festivals of the year. With more South Asians migrating to various parts of the world, the number of countries where Diwali is celebrated has gradually increased. While in some countries it is celebrated mainly by Indian expatriates, in others it has become part of the general local culture. In most of these countries Diwali is celebrated in a similar fashion family festivities, fireworks, worship, lights, and the sharing of sweets. The essence is the same to rejoice in the Light. The Operation Christmas Child campaign is underway, with one more month to get your gift-filled shoe boxes in. Last year Merritt collected 407 boxes for poor children living in parts of Central and South America, and Canada shipped out 640,714 boxes to impoverished areas of Africa, Haiti, South & Central America. Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritans Purse, is the worlds largest Christmas project and all together, 8.6 million shoe boxes were delivered last year to children whose lives have been affected by poverty, disease, war and natural disasters. Organizers are hoping to beat last years goal, so start filling those boxes. Remember: no used items or toothpaste due to customs regulations, no war-related toys; no gum, chocolate or unwrapped candy; no decks of standard playing cards; and nothing that will break, leak, freeze or melt. Try to select a variety of toys, good quality school supplies, and hygiene items suitable for the age and gender of the child. Boxes and forms are available for pick up and drop off at most local churches, Curves Gym, and the dollar stores, or use your own recycled shoe boxes or Rubbermaid containers. Its nice to add a Christmas card and note to the child, or a photo of you or your family as translators are available to read your letters to the child. Samaritans Purse also supports school feeding programs, literacy classes, womens programs, and helps improve water quality in villages with the BioSand Water Filters. Greyhound bus delivers all the boxes free of charge to Calgary where they are inspected and sorted before shipping. If time is a factor, the local dollar stores can do a box up for you, or visit www.samaritanspurse.ca and fill a box on-line. Donations for the shipping fees can also be made on-line.
