In this lesson, you will be able to answer

the following questions:
1. What are the different parts of a plant?
2. What is the function of each part?
Jump 3. What are the different kinds of plants?
Start 4. What are some ways of caring for
plants?

Plants have different parts and characteristics.

They are usually green because of a green
substance called chlorophyll, which they use in
making their own food.
The main parts of plants are the roots, stems, and leaves. Some
plants bear flowers that become fruits.
Fruits may have one or more seeds. All these parts help plants
grow and reproduce.

Roots usually grow under the ground.

They anchor the plants to the ground
and absorb water and minerals from the
soil. Plants can either have fibrous roots
or taproots.
Fibrous roots consist of fine, spreading,
and shallow roots that can easily
absorb water. Grass has fibrous roots.
Other plants such as banana and
coconut trees have fibrous roots, too.
Taproots have bigger and finer roots
that grow downward. Carrots, radish,
and turnip (singkamas) are example of plants with taproots. These
plants use their roots to store food.

Stems carry water and nutrients taken in by the

roots to the leaves and other plant parts.
Stems also provide support to the upper parts
of a plant. They hold its leaves and flowers.
Food made in the leaves is delivered to the
different parts of the plant through the stems.
Plants make their own food through the
leaves. The leaves absorb sunlight that
plants use to make their food through a
process called photosynthesis. The leaves
also serve as a site for the exchange of
gases between a plant and its
environment. Tiny openings in the leaves
called stomata (singular: stoma) serve as
passageways for the carbon dioxide to
be absorbed by the plant from the
environment and for the oxygen to be
released by the plant into the
environment.

The seeds contain the tiny plants (embryos)
that grow and live to become new plants of the same kind. Seeds
can be scattered by wind, water, or animals, allowing the plants to
grow in different places.
Arrange the letters in the box to form the correct word. Write the correct word on the
blank. (Note: The words are about the different kinds of plants).

Plants come in different kinds. Can you tell the differences among
the plants you see in your surroundings?
A tree is a large, woody plant with a big stem or trunk. The trunk
is protected by a covering called the
bark. The branches and leaves of a tree
form the crown. The crown gives the
tree its shape. Trees have different
shapes and sizes. The largest trees can
live for many years and may grow to
around 100 meters (m). Some examples
of trees are narra, mahogany, and
acacia.

Shrubs also have

woody stems,
but they are
smaller than
trees. Unlike
trees, shrubs do
not have a trunk
and are usually
less than 3 m in height. Some examples
of shrubs are rose, gumamela, rosal, and
santan.
Unlike shrubs and trees, herbs
do not have woody stems. They
have soft stems. Herbs are
often used for cooking and for
medicinal purposes. Examples
of herbs are oregano, basil, and
mayana.

Grass usually has narrow leaves and hollow

stems. Some grass has small flowers.
Examples of grass include wheat grass,
maize (corn), and lemon grass (tanglad).

Vines climb or cling on to other plants

or objects, such as trees, using their
tendrils (specialized coiling or
spiralling stems). Examples of vines
are squash, luffa (patola), sweet potato
(kamote), and bitter gourd (ampalaya).

Plants are
important. People and animals get the oxygen that they need for
breathing from plants. Plants also help clean the air. Most of the
resources that people need such as food, medicine, wood, and
clothing come from plants.
If people will not protect and preserve the habitats where plants
live, many plants will die. Conservation is one way of protecting
the environment from being destroyed.
One way to conserve plants is to plant new ones. You can start
doing this in your own home or school. You can plant small
flowering plants, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and herbs. You should
also not destroy the plants in your surroundings. Instead, you must
give them proper care so they can continue to live and grow. Here
are other ways of caring for plants:
1. Give plants just enough water every day. Too much or too little
water will cause plants to die.
2. Add an adequate amount of fertilizer or compost to help plants
get their needed nutrients.
3. Put plants in places where they can get the right amount of air
and sunlight.
4. Do not pick, step on, or play with plants.
