Pulls the fourth flap towards the nurse by grasping the corner that

is turned down.
OPENING A WRAPPED PACKAGE WHILE HOLDING IT
Holds the package in one hand with the top flap opening away
from the nurse.
Using the other hand, opens the package by pulling the corners of
the flaps well back.
Tucks each of the corners into the hand holding the package.
OPENING COMMERCIALLY PREPARED PACKAGES
If the flap of the package has an unsealed corner, holds the
package in one hand, and pulls back on the flap, with the other
hand.
If the package has sealed edge, grasps both sides of the edge, one
with each hand, and pull apart gently.
ESTABLISH A STERILE FIELD BY USING A DRAPE.
Opens the package containing the drape.
With one hand, plucks the corner of the drape that is folded back
on top touching only one side of the drape.
Lifts the drape out of the cover and allows it to open freely without
touching any objects.
With the other hand, carefully pick-ups another corner of the
drape, holding it well away from the nurse and again touching only
the same side of the drape as the first hand.
Lays the drape on a clean and dry surface, placing the bottom
farthest from the nurse.
Adds necessary sterile supplies, being careful not to touch the
drape with the hands.
TO ADD WRAPPED SUPPLIES TO A STERILE FIELD
Opens each wrapped package using the free hand by grasping the
corners of the wrapper and hold them against the wrist of the other
hand.
Places the sterile bowl, drape, or other supply on the sterile field
by approaching from an angle rather than holding the arm over the
field.
Discards the wrapper.
ADDING COMMERCIALLY PACKAGE SUPPLIES TO A STERILE FIELD
Opens each package by holding it 6 inches above the field, and
allow the contents to drop on the field.
ADDING SOLUTION TO A STERILE BOWL
Obtains the exact amount of solution if possible.
Reads the label three times and wipes the outside of the bottle
with a damped towel before pouring any liquid.
Removes the lid or cap from the bottle and invert the lid before
pouring it in a unsterile surface.
Holds the bottle so that label is against the palm of the hand.
Holds the bottle of the fluid at a length of 4-6 inches over the bowl
and to the side of the sterile field so that as little of the bottle as
possible is over the field.
Pours the solution gently.
Tilts the neck of the bottle back to vertical quickly when done
pouring.
If the bottle will be used again, replaces the lid securely, and write
on the label the date and time of opening.
Uses sterile forceps to handle sterile supplies.
If forceps tips are wet, keeps the tips lower than the wrist at all
times.
Holds sterile forceps above wrist or table level, whichever is higher.
Ensures that the forceps do not touch the edges or outside of the
wrapper.
When placing forceps whose handles were in contact with the bare
hand, positions the handles outside the sterile area.
Deposits a sterile item on a sterile field without permitting moist
forceps to touch the sterile field when the surface under the
absorbent sterile field is unsterile and a barrier drape is not used.
Documents in the client’s chart that sterile technique was observed
in the performance of the procedure.
