TYPES OF FASHION PRODUCTION There are many reasons people choose to wear what they wear and great fashion designers know exactly for whom they are designing clothes and what needs they are meeting. In addition to the age-old need for protection, people use fashion and clothing to help identify with a certain social group, show status, and as a means of self-expression. Many people rely on their chosen style of clothing to share their personalities. Fashion varies with regards to the socio-economic group, occupation, status, age, region, country, religion, culture, and a host of other factors. Fashionable clothing is certain to fall into a variety of classifications and categories-and this is where new fashion designers can start-including: HIGH FASHION High fashion (also referred to as Haute Couture) is the most exclusive of clothing lines and revolves around custom-made outfits made-to-order around body type, taste, color, and specific measurements. Because of the high cost, high fashion is typically created by fashion designers and design houses that have established brands and clientele. Many of the materials are carefully sourced to help provide a more unique and distinctive finish. High fashion clothing is of course expensive and this limits its availability in the fashion world. New fashion designers, as much as they might like, shouldn’t start with high fashion READY-TO-WEAR The ready-to-wear clothing line (also call prét-a-porter and off-the-rack) is more standardized clothing that is pre-made and available in a variety of pre- determined sizes. Ready-to-wear clothing designers use standard patterns, less expensive fabrics, large factory equipment, and faster construction techniques to keep costs low. Ready-to-wear clothing will not give the precise fit offered by the custom-make range. Instead, it is sold in standard sizes to fit the majority of the shopping public. Petite-size and plus-size outfits are also available in this range, but there is certain to be less choice offered compared to the standard sizes. A selection of high-end off-the-rack fashion outfits are offered by some of the finer fashion houses to make the well-known fashion brands more accessible to the wide marketplace. Think Giorgio Armani’s Armani Exchange or Calvin Klein’s Jeans. This setup allows top designers to capture a larger portion of the market without sacrificing their equity, unless, as sometimes happens, quality noticeably suffers. Most new fashion designers will start with ready-to-wear because they do not have the resources to produce either couture, which requires existing high-end customers, or mass-market fashion, which requires high sales. MASS-MARKET FASHION Mass-market is a clothing line that is cheaply and quickly produced in high volume at the more standard sizes using large manufacturing facilities. Mass- market clothing is often known by the term disposable fashion since it is usually seasonal in nature and manufactured in the cheapest materials available. Mass- market fashion is the most readily available fashion choice and offered at the most affordable end of the market. Think H&M, Uniqlo, and Forever 21. While these brands get access to the largest segment of the market, they typically suffer from quality-and reputation-issues. Budding fashion designers typically don’t have the cash or relationships needed to do such large manufacturing runs = the risk would simply be too high. * clientele = all the customers or clients of a shop, restaurant, organization, etc.
