Bike Safely
Joyce Mae B. Macatangay

Linda has a new bike! She was so excited to use it.

She asked her father if he could teach her how to ride a bike to go to the park.
“Father, could you please teach me how to ride my bike in the park?” Linda asked.
“You need to be very careful in biking Linda. Tie up your shoelaces and wear your helmet
properly,” father replied.
“Why do I need to wear a helmet father?” asked Linda.
“Wearing a helmet helps protect your face, head, and brain if you fall down. That is why it is
so important to wear your bike helmet whenever you are on a bike, father explained.”
Father led their way and gave directions to Linda.
“Ok, let us start practicing. Check your bike tires to make sure they've got enough air”, he
said.
“Ride on your bike. Grip the hand bars firmly. Push your foot forward on the pedal and start
pedaling in a straight line”, he added.
Linda continued pedaling faster and saw children biking, people walking, cars moving and
birds flying. Everything was moving.
She asked her father how these objects moved.
“Father, how do these things move?”
“Ah! That is because of force and motion. Remember when I told you to push your foot on
the ground, it moved. The pedals are connected to the rear wheel by a chain. When you pushed the
pedals, the back wheel turns. This moves the bike forward. When you move from one place to
another you change your position. That is called motion”, her father explained.
Linda started pedaling faster and faster.
“You should not ride too fast. Speed is how fast or slow the objects move. Now, here comes a
sign to stop. Hold the brakes for you to stop. Look to your left and to your right to make sure there
are no cars coming to prevent accident, her father added.”
“Slow down, Linda, we need to turn left here”, her father instructed.
“Yes, father I will remember what you have said”, Linda answered.
“At last, we made it here at the park safely,” her father said.
