Assignment 3
Due: Tuesday Oct 23, 2012 at 16:00; Submission to the assignment slot (located at the 3rd
floor in Mackenzie Building between blocks 3 & 4)

Note: Please fill out the above blanks and use this page as the cover page of your assignment.

Question 1
A simple floor system for an office building is shown in the figures. All connections are
simply supported: Beam-Girder, Beam-Column and Girder-Column. A preliminary design is
performed and member sizes are selected. The steel beam selected is a W250 x28 and the
steel girder selected is a W690 x125.

The live load of the office areas from the National Building Code of Canada is 2.4 kPa; Ignore the
reduction allowed for the live load. The concrete floor slab is 120 mm thick (take ρconc.=2400 kg/m3).
The self weight of the finishing screed and vinyl tiles is 0.5 kPa. The ceiling below is a normal
suspended ceiling of acoustic tiles weighing 0.2 kPa.
For beams and girders, let φ= 0.9, fy=350 MPa, and E=200 GPa.

a) Determine the maximum factored shear load, the maximum factored applied moment, and the
required section modulus for beam B1.

b) Determine the maximum factored shear load, the maximum factored applied moment, and the
required section modulus for girder G2.

c) Determine the moment of inertia required to satisfy the serviceability limit state of unfactored live
load deflections limited to 1/360 of the span. Check the serviceability only for beam B1.

Question 2
In question1, assume that the construction details of the floor system have been changed as shown
below in the elevation view. The concrete slab is connected to both steel beam and girder.

Section A-A

a) Determine the specified (unfactored) load distribution pattern for beam B1.
b) Determine the specified (unfactored) load distribution pattern for girder G2.
