CLASS XII SALT ANALYSIS
ANION ANALYSIS
* Test mentioned next to group (or anion, for group III) is the preliminary test; the ones mentioned
under an anion are confirmatory tests for it.
Group I (dil. H2SO4 group)- CO32-(carbonate), SO32-(sulphite), S2-(sulphide), NO2-(nitrite);
Salt + dil.H2SO4
No reaction: Group I anion not present. Continue to groupII.
1. Carbonate: Colourless and odourless gas(CO2)
1. WE(Water extract-Made by taking a pinch of salt in a test tube and shaking it with water) + MgSO4 =
white ppt
2. Pass WE + dil. H2SO4 = CO2 gas evolved through lime water using a U-tube= lime water turns milky
2. Sulphite:colourless gas with pungent smell
1. WE + BaCl2(aq) = white ppt soluble in dil.HCl
2. WE + acidified K2Cr2O7(potassium dichromate) = solution turns green
3. WE + acidified KMnO4 = pink colour of KMnO4 is discharged
3. Sulphide: Colourless gas with a smell of rotten eggs(H2S); turns lead acetate paper black
1. Sodium Nitroprusside test: WE + Sodium Nitroprusside = purple/violet colour
2. Lead Acetate test: WE + Lead Acetate= black ppt
4. Nitrite: Pungent light brown gas:
1. Starch-iodide test: WE + dil.H2SO4(or dil. Acetic acid); boil, then add solid KI + fresh starch sol = deep
blue colouration.
CATION ANALYSIS
*Group reagent is the one mentioned next to group cations
*When sulphate is detected, Ba2+, Ca2+, Pb2+ & Sr2+ are not present as sulphates of these radicals are
insoluble
*When phosphate is detected, cations of group III and later are absent.
Note: Before analyzing further individual groups, check whether Group V is present by performing
Flame Test.
Flame Test: Take salt & make a paste by mixing with conc. HCl. Take paste on tip of glass rod/platinum
wire, and put in Bunsen burner flame: Ba2+: Green flame; Sr2+: Crimson red flame; Ca2+: Brick red flame
Group I-Pb2+(lead); OS + dil. HCl = white ppt: add water; boil & divide into three parts
1. Leave OS undisturbed = white crystals formed on cooling
2. KI(potassium iodide) test: OS + KI = yellow ppt
3. K2CrO4 (Potassium chromate) test: OS + K2CrO4 = yellow ppt
Group IV- Co2+(cobalt), Ni2+(nickel), Mn2+(manganese), Zn2+(zinc); OS + solid NH4Cl + excess NH4OH +
pass H2S gas (Co salts are rose/red in colour & Ni salts are green in colour)
1. Co2+(cobalt), Ni2+(nickel): Black ppt; dissolve ppt in aqua regia (Aqua regia is 3 parts conc. HCl + 1
part HNO3) and evaporate soln to dryness to get residue
a) Co2+: Blue residue; turns pink/purple when dissolved in water; then divide into two parts
i) Part I + dil. Acetic acid + KNO2(potassium nitrite) = warm = yellow ppt
ii) Part II + ether(1 mL) + solid NH4CNS (ammonium sulphocyanide) = blue colour in ether
b) Ni2+: yellow residue; turns green when dissolved in water; divide into two parts
i) DMG (Dimethyl glyoxime reagent) test: Part I + excess NH4OH + DMG = bright/ rosy red ppt
ii) Part II + NaOH + bromine water + boil = black ppt
Group VI- Mg2+(magnesium): OS + solid NH4Cl + excess NH4OH + (NH4)3PO4 (ammonium phoshphate)/
NaH2PO4(sodium dihydrogen phosphate) = white ppt
