Year 12: General Mathematics Units 3 & 4

General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 focus on real-life application of mathematics

and consist of the areas of study ‘Data analysis, probability, and statistics’ and
‘Discrete mathematics’.

Unit 3 comprises Data analysis and Recursion and financial modelling.

Unit 4 comprises Matrices and Networks and decision mathematics.

Assumed knowledge and skills for General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 are contained
in General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 (Networks), and will be drawn on, as
applicable, in the development of related content from the areas of study, and key
knowledge and key skills for the outcomes of General Mathematics Units 3 and 4.

In undertaking these units, students are expected to be able to apply techniques,

routines and processes involving rational and real arithmetic, sets, lists, tables
and matrices, diagrams, networks, algorithms, algebraic manipulation, recurrence
relations, equations, and graphs. They should have facility with relevant mental
and by-hand approaches to estimation and computation.

The use of numerical, graphical, geometric, symbolic statistical and financial

functionality of technology for teaching and learning mathematics, for working
mathematically, and in related assessment, is to be incorporated throughout each
unit as applicable.

Unit 3
School-assessed Coursework for Unit 3 will contribute 24 per cent to the study
score.

The Application task is a guided investigation of a given data set with several
variables. (40 marks)

The task has three components of increasing complexity:

 the construction, description, and interpretation of data plots, including

smoothed plots where time series data is used.
 the calculation and interpretation of summary statistics, including seasonal
indices and their application where time series data is used.
 the modelling of linear associations, or trends where time series data is used,
including the use of data transformation as appropriate.

The application task will be about 6 periods in duration during class time.

The Modelling task/ Problem solving task will relate to Financial Mathematics
(20 marks)
It will be undertaken under exam conditions on Wednesday afternoon.

Unit 4
School-assessed Coursework for Unit 4 will contribute 16 per cent to the study
score.

Matrices and the other modelling or problem-solving tasks will relate to Networks
and decision mathematics.
Each task is to be undertaken under exam conditions. (20 marks for each Topic)

The examinations at the end of the year will contribute 60 per cent to the study
score.

Each examination 1 & 2 will each contribute 30 per cent to the study score.

ASSESSMENT AND WORK REQUIREMENT DETAILS

Students will have 2 workbooks:

One used for writing down class notes and the other for all homework
exercises.

There will be 3 graded assessment tasks each semester:

 Chapter exercises

 Class Topic Tests

 Assignments

 All tasks must be completed to a satisfactory standard to obtain an

“S” for the unit.

 A WORKBOOK (which can include worksheets as well as homework

exercises) must also be completed to a satisfactory standard and
handed in at the end of each topic.

Transition Homework:

Students must complete the following work before the start of 2024 school year:

From Notes No.1 and 2 on CANVAS

Sig Figures Complete Ex 1D Q) 1-10

From Jacaranda General 3&4

From Core Chapter 1: Ex 1.1 to 1.4 -Data Distributions.

Networks- Chapter 9: Ex 9.2 to 9.5 – Undirected Graphs.

SCHOOL ASSESSMENT TASKS

*Students will complete chapter exercises (with workings out) during class
time and during home time.

*Students will complete an Assignment for each topic during a double period in
Class (open book)- this will be under exam conditions and contribute towards
an ‘S’ for Units 3 & 4.

* Students must sit the SACs on the appointed day -otherwise, a medical
certificate is needed if absent.

* Students that are not present on the SAC Day because of illness/ school
activity/ Vet will complete Version 2 SAC on the catch-up day.
