1.0 General
1.1 Application
This procedure shall be used by Kong Brothers Engineering Works Sdn. Bhd., Petaling Jaya,
(KBEW) in the fabrication of 2:1 semi-elliposoidal heads, torione, flat heads and
torispherical heads.
1.2 This procedure covers the fabrication method for 2:1 semi-ellipsoidal heads, torione, flat heads
and torispherical heads.
a) Receiving Inspection.
b Cutting Plan and Making. (Not applicable-by client)
c) Blank cutting (Not applicable-by client)
d) Head forming
i) Pressing
ii) Spinning
e) Inspection
i) Thickness Inspection
ii) Dimension Inspection
3.2 Obtain blank dimensions of respective heads for marking before cutting. (Not applicable-by client)
3.3 Mark out blank size according to cutting plan. Due allowance for shrinkages and cutting line
shall be provided. (Not applicable -by client)
3.4 Transfer stamp material specifications and heat no. to blanks using low stress stamps.
Low stress stamp shall not be used for thin materials (less than 6 mm) (Not applicable -by client)
3.5 QC Inspector shall verify material specifications, heat no., thickness and stamping details against
respective mill certificate. (Not applicable -by client)
3.6 QC Inspector shall visually inspect material for defects. When found acceptable, stamp plate and
blanks. Stamp adjacent to heat member.(Not applicable -by client)
4.2 Label blanks with vessel number. (Not applicable -by client)
4.4 Inspector verify blank sizes and edge defects. When found acceptable, release for dishing and
spinning. (Not applicable -by client)
5.1 Cold forming means the forming operation is performed at room temperature.
5.2 All heads are formed by cold pressing the crown and cold forming the knuckle zones. All heads
shall be certified for compliance with AMSE Section VIII Div. 1, Clause UCS-79 (d) or 1,
Clause UCS-79 (d) or 1, Clause UCS-79 (d) or otherwise.
5.3 Extreme fibre elongation percentage allowed: C-101 (1.533%) C-1104 (5.319)
6.0 Pressing
6.1 The plate is so dished that the plate identification is on the convex side of the dish head.
6.2 The dishing process is to provide the dish plate for subsequent spinning.
6.3 The die and mould shall be selected to provide the required profile.
6.4 The crown radius shall be monitored during pressing to obtain the final correct profile of the
applicable dish head with a template.
7.0 Spinning
7.1 Cold spinning shall be adopted.
7.2 The knuckle radius should be formed within as short a time as possible on
a cold spinning machine.
7.3 Heavy ripple along the knuckle zone caused by rapid spinning shall be avoided.

7.4 The head shall be checked against a template and deviation beyond the permitted tolerance shall
be corrected by subsequent resizing.
7.5 Final inspection of dish head shall be carried out by our QC Inspector and or TPI if required.
Acceptance criteria shall comply to UG-81. Finished thickness and circumference of straight flange
and length of straight flange shall be recorded.
7.6 All data and measurements observed shall be recorded in the manufacturer's certificate
fordish heads produced.
7.8 To perform visual inspection to identify defects after forming. (Surface defect and
