Topic 1: How Electricity is Generated

Thursday, January 25, 2024 10:59 AM

Electricity is a fundamental form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles, either
statistically as an accumulation of charge or dunamically as an electric current.

Electric Current is the flow of electric charge through a conductor, such as a wire. It is typically
measured in amperes (A) and represents the rate of charge flow.

Static Electricity:
• A type of electrical charge that is accociated with the imbalance of electrons on the surface of
an object.
• It is called "static" because the electric charges typically remain in one place and do not flow as
a current

Electromagnetic Induction:
• Also called the Generator Effect
• When the electric field of an electron interacts with the magnetic field of a permanenet
magnet
• The electron experiences a force propelling it to move, producing electricity.

A generator is a device that converts the mechanical energy into the electrical energy – made
possible by electromagnetism.

Generation of Electricity: Occurs mainly as the large power plants. Energy may come from
conventional or nonconventional sources.

• Coventional – Natural Energy sources which are regularly used for many years
○ Petroleum
○ Coal
○ Natural Gas
○ Hydroelectric
○ Geothermal
○ Nuclear
• Nonconventional – Natural Energu sources
