Unit IG2: Risk assessment

Declaration: by submitting this assessment (Parts 1 – 4) for marking I declare that it is entirely my own work. I understand that falsely claiming that the
work is my own is malpractice and can lead to NEBOSH imposing severe penalties (see the NEBOSH Malpractice Policy for further information).

Part 1: Background

Include in here the organisation’s name* and location* and number of workers. You must then go on to give a description of the main
activities/products/services carried out. You must also describe the area to be risk assessed eg, whole site, and anything else that you
consider relevant (approximately 150 to 200 words):

My organization is Parklane Construction Limited, which is licenced to undertake projects of any magnitude in Kenya and is based in the Kenyan
capital Nairobi.

Parklane Construction Limited specializes in construction activities including construction of multi-story buildings, yards, playing grounds,
renovation works and other civil works. The recent projects that the company has taken include construction of multi-story buildings, renovation
works for office premises, playing grounds and parking yards. The company has an elite team of employees that supervise construction activities to
ensure delivery of quality work that exceeds the expectations of the client. The typical activities involved at construction sites include loading and
offloading materials, concrete works, masonry, plumbing, scaffolding, painting, installation of electrical appliances, finishing works among others.

This risk assessment will cover the construction site at the Cooperative University of Kenya, where I work for Parklane Construction Limited as a
project manager. The main project is the construction of a four-story library block, pavements and landscaping works for the playing field. Workers
report to the site at 7.30 am and work for eight hours a day with a lunch break of one hour from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm. The site did not have risk
assessment area and the company does not have health and safety personnel on site.

You must now give a brief outline on how you completed the risk assessment (approximately 200 words):

The National Construction Authority (NCA) stipulates that health and safety precautions have to be adhered to at any construction
site. Despite this, most companies have not fully implemented the health and safety precautions on construction sites and the
government has not come out to enforce these rules. It is thus the duty of workers and personnel on site to take safety precautions
while on site.

In undertaking this risk assessment, I referred to the Safety and Health in the Construction Site catalogue from NCA which stipulates
that safety precautions to be observed at construction sites. The catalogue can be accessed from www.nca.go.ke and describes

different types of hazards, accident measurement approaches and the importance of improving health and safety at the construction
site.

After going through the catalogue, I assessed the working conditions at the construction site where I work and tried to correlate if the
working conditions were meeting the guidelines. I also interviewed some of my workers to find out if they were contented with the
working conditions.

I also reviewed several articles related to health and safety in construction sites including studies from the Institute of Engineers of
Kenya, the American Journal of Construction and Building Materials, the Health Safety Environment (HSE) East Africa and The
Journal for Employee Protection . The review provided more information about the occurrence of accidents at construction sites and,
the current trends, mitigation measures taken by the relevant authorities and the measures that need to be taken.

* If you’re worried about confidentiality, you can invent a false name and location for your organisation but, all other information provided must be
factual.

Part 3: Prioritise three actions and justification for the selection

You must pick the three highest priority/most urgent actions and justify your choice. Your justification must include moral, legal and
financial arguments (500 to 700 words); consideration of likelihood and probable severity of injury, ill-health and/or harm (150 to 250 words);
description of how effective each action is likely to be in controlling the risk (250 to 350 words).

Part 4: Review, communicate and check

You must now give a review date for your risk assessment and say why you have chosen this date (10 to 50 words).

You must now indicate how the risk assessment findings will be communicated (including who needs to know the information) (100 to 150
words).

You must now indicate how you will follow-up on the risk assessment to check that the actions have been carried out (100 to 150 words).
