EDMGT 607- CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND ENRICHMENT

Considering the importance of literacy and numeracy skills in primary education, there’s a need to revisit

and evaluate the delivery of these skills. As a teacher, I have noticed that these foundational skills have a

profound impact on students’ overall academic performance and future success.

Literacy and numeracy skills at the elementary level form the backbone of a student’s educational

journey. For students to excel across disciplines, and engage in critical thinking, the ability to read, write,

understand text, and develop a solid understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts is essential.

However, there are some careful considerations in strengthening this knowledge. First, there is a need

for greater instructional time for literacy and numeracy. In doing so, teachers will have the opportunity to delve

deeper into these topics, enabling students to develop strong conceptual understanding and develop the

necessary skills.

Another important aspect is to ensure that the development of literacy and numeracy skills extends

beyond rote learning and procedural understanding. By incorporating real-life applications and problem solving,

students can develop the ability to apply these skills in practical situations, creating deeper connections and

understanding of the topic.

Providing opportunities for continuing professional development for teachers is equally important.

Equipping teachers with effective instructional strategies and resources ensures that they can effectively deliver
the instruction needed by individual students. By enhancing teacher training, we can create environments that

support diverse students and nurture their literacy and numeracy skills.

Finally, using regular assessments and timely feedback can help monitor student progress and identify

areas of targeted intervention. This feedback loop enables teachers to address comprehension gaps and provide

individualized support to students who are struggling in these areas.

In conclusion, there is a need to review and evaluate the delivery of literacy and numeracy skills at the

primary level to strengthen the educational foundation of young students. By addressing challenges and

incorporating dedicated instructional time, social services, teacher training, and ongoing assessment, we can

create an environment that empowers students to develop deep literacy and numeracy skills tough. This sets

them on a path to future academic success and lifelong learning.
