Chapter 1 - System Overview

1.1 Summary
The Repeater is a radio signal to signal enhancement in the wireless communication
transmission in the process of transmitting transfer bi-directional amplifier device. It not
only enlarged downlink signal but also enlarge the uplink signal, so it is also called bi-directional
amplifier. Widely used in local signal blind elimination influenced by many-storied
buildings, alpine terrain, landform, terrain and produce or weak signal area. Through setting up
the two-way amplifier can reduce the investment situation of base station coverage, improve
the effect and range of the base station signal.
The application difficulty of RF Repeater is that the donor antenna and a retransmission
antenna should provide enough system isolation, in order to meet the amplifier does not self
excitation in high gain conditions. In practical engineering, if isolation is not enough, The
amplifier will cause self excitation, will interference the donor base station or even the whole
network system.
LTE900 ICS Repeater (ICS:Interference Cancellation System) is a kind of repeater
equipment which eliminate self-excitation feedback signal real-time by software radio
technology. ICS wireless repeater is mainly composed of uplink ICM module, downlink ICM
module, uplink frequency converter, downlink frequency converter, uplink power amplifier,
downlink power amplifier and the duplexer, the ICM module is digital self excitation signal
elimination module.

1.2 Main Features

Good Isolation
Traditional outdoor site is often affected by the local installation environment limit so it cannot
improve the isolation between the donor antenna and the retransmission antenna. Cause the
equipment cannot be erected and normally open, ICS repeater can be very good to solve this
kind of problem.
High Gain of Equipment
The traditional wireless outdoor site because conditions by isolation must be greater than the
gain of 15dB, cause equipment gain can not be bigger because of impacting by erecting
environmental, ICS repeater get rid of the aforementioned influence, Can increase the
equipment gain, and achieve the weak signal area normal coverage.
Compared with the wireless repeater, ICS repeater has the following advantages:

 The antenna isolation requirements can be reduced more than 35dB, Receiving antenna
and antenna using the same holding pole, thereby reduce the installation difficulty and cost.

5
LTE900 ICS Repeater User’s Manual Ver: 1.0

 In the same antenna isolation conditions, the whole machine gain can be increased more
than 35dB, to achieve more coverage scope.

 Has uplink noise suppression function, the impact to base station receiver sensitivity is
small.

 Has the automatic gain and level control function, ensure the output power is constant.

 No special requirements on the feedback path between the receiving antenna and transmit
antenna, can adapt to various installation site.

Compared with fiber optic repeater, ICS repeater has the following advantages:

 Does not need to rely on the fiber resources, can reduce the cost of installation.

 There is no Local unit, reducing failure rate.

Compared with frequency shift repeater, ICS repeater has the following advantages:

 Work in the same frequency band, saving frequency resources.

 Don't need OCXO, avoid because of constant temperature crystal aging induced frequency
drift.

 There is no Local unit, reducing failure rate.

1.3 Working Principle

Through unique digital processing technology, LTE900 ICS repeater effectively capture and
tracking the transmission characteristics of external leakage path, The transmission
characteristics can be equivalent to a FIR filter, it is called mirror filter. send the signal which will
be sent to the mirror filter, under the ideal condition, External leakage signal in the signal which
is export and reception by mirror filter is exactly the same, so that you can subtracts the mirror
filter output in the input signal, to suppress the interference. Because of the external leakage
environment is unknown and changing, LTE900 ICS repeater first needs catch the transmission
characteristics of leakage path in feedback inhibition calibration status, and keep trace the
external environment changes in normal operation.

Figure 3-10 Query Downlink Output Power

Cautions:

23
LTE900 ICS Repeater User’s Manual Ver: 1.0

LTE900 ICS Repeater comes with power detection function, without spectrum analyzer
and other equipment can be relatively accurately measure the uplink and downlink power.
The downlink input and output power is be detected actually. Uplink output power due to the
general case will be relatively small and is burst signal, the power value be queried may be an
indeterminate value.

3.2.7 Adjust the Uplink and Downlink Gain

Before setting the uplink and downlink attenuation values, it is best to perform
query operations uplink and downlink attenuation value, to provide data reference for
the next setting.( The greater the attenuation values is, the lower the gain is).
To set up the uplink and downlink attenuation value, firstly select the check boxes of “UL
ATT value” and “DL ATT value” on “parameter settings” tab, and then input attenuation value
in the "Set value" column after the "UL ATT value" and "DL ATT value"(As shown in Figure
3-11), then click the "Set" button.(Unit of attenuation value is: dB)

Figure 3-11

Adjusted Downlink Attenuation Values

According to querying results of "downlink output power", adjusted downlink attenuation
values. If the output power is high, then increase in downlink attenuation values, if the
output power is low, and then reduce downlink attenuation values. Output power relate
to power level of equipment and the base station carrier frequency number. For example:
When a set of 20W LTE900 ICS Repeater work with a set of four carrier frequency base
station, when the four-carrier frequency are all working, LTE900 ICS Repeater output power is
the maximum——20W, if only one carrier frequency is working, the results of the query should
be 5W——37dBm, if it is higher than this number should increase downlink attenuation
values.
Factory settings: The downlink attenuation value is 0dB.
Adjust Uplink Attenuation Values
After the LTE900 ICS Repeater power on, check whether the uplink signal interfere with

24
LTE900 ICS Repeater User’s Manual Ver: 1.0

the base station signals, if so, increase in uplink attenuation values. Test Call quality in not
interfere with the base station, if the call is not good, you can try to reduce the uplink
attenuation value to increase the uplink receiver sensitivity. The premise is not interfering
base station.
Factory settings: The uplink attenuation value is 0dB.

3.2.8 Frequency Setting and Query

Equipment can set the frequency of the channel within its operating frequency range.
Frequency Range: Uplink: 825-835Mhz,Downlink: 870-880Mhz。
Factory settings:
Uplink: 826.11 MHz, 828.57 MHz, 831.03 MHz, 833.49 MHz,

There are five groups of Query/Set number, These five groups of numbers can
query and set the operating parameters and state of the Repeater, The five groups can
be all set, you can also set only a few of them. Alarm information will report to the
“Report Tel number” when the equipment has alarm information. “Query/Set number”
and “Report Tel number” can be the same. The SIM cards of above numbers must be
inserted in the LTE900 MODEM supplied by Our Company. The LTE900 MODEM must
be connected with our monitor center software before being used normally.
3. When building new site, shall ensure that "the monitoring center software" site number,
Site Device number, Telephone number are the same as these parameters in LTE900 ICS
repeater, if they are not consistent, it will lead to communication failure.
4. The completion of the above operations, the monitoring center can perform remote
query, setting and alarm test for the repeater.

whether the board damp moldy, whether RF connector cable is cracking, loosening, and other
unusual circumstances? And record.

4.4 Fault and Alert Handling

Common faults and alarms and processing methods are as follows:
1. Failure phenomenon: The signal is weak near transponder antenna.
Processing steps: Whether the power supply is normal, use a multi-meter to measure
whether the output +28 V power supply module is normal; Is there a problem in downlink
amplifier module, can touch its surface, if the temperature is almost the same as LNA module,
then the amplifier has a problem;Check the RF cable of the downlink path, are there
Loosening, poor contact;Asked whether the donor base station abnormal working; Use "Test
Phone" and "Dedicated Test Line" measure the received signal strength of "donor antenna", if

29
LTE900 ICS Repeater User’s Manual Ver: 1.0

it is very small, then the donor side may change or feed source has been broken.
2. Failure phenomenon: Weak signal in coverage area, but monitoring software
displays "downlink power" is the full power.
Processing steps: There are two reasons for analysis: First is, receives the downlink
signal is too strong, and then adjust the angle of the "outdoor antenna" to decrease the
strength of received signal. Second is, donor and transponder antenna isolation is not enough
cause that Donor Antenna and Transponder Antenna signal mutual channeling each other, in
this case, you should change the difference in height between the donor antenna and
transponder antenna, or increase the distance between the donor antenna and the
transponder antenna, achieve the purposes of increasing isolation between donor antenna
and transponder antenna. If the above methods do not solve the problem, you need to add an
attenuator between the "LTE900 ICS Repeater " and "outdoor antenna", or reduce the
equipment gain.
