TIMELINE

1849

• Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart, the two recent German immigrants cousins to the USA, began to
establish the Pfizer Company in Brooklyn, New York, United States.

• By responding to the American government's request to develop a method for generating penicillin in
large quantities during World War II, Pfizer helped usher in the era of modern medicine.

1861

• The subsequent demand during the American Civil War such as disinfectants, preservatives, and
painkillers doubled the company’s revenue and enabled the company for its continuous expansion.

1868

• As a result of the company’s existence, Pfizer buys and renovates a post-Revolutionary-era building in
Manhattan and preferably moves its headquarters to that area. Therefore, the company has an increased
product line and hired 150 new employees.

1877

• The manufacturing of straight razors began in 1877.

• Pfizer officially incorporated in the State of New Jersey by filing a certificate of incorporation as Charles
Pfizer & Company Inc. that details its authorized capital of $2 million, which was split into 20,000 shares
of $100 each.

• The company was also expanding its operation globally, with a focus on expanding into international
markets such as Asia and Europe.

1908

• The company was acquired by Gustavus A. Pfeiffer & Company who was a patent medicine company
from St. Louise.

1914

• In Chicago, John Anderson founded the first office of the business.

1919

• In order to break Pfizer's dependence on European citrus producers, Pfizer's Christ James Currie and
his assistant, Jasper Kane, pioneered the bulk manufacture of citric acid from sugar using mold
fermentation.

• Pfizer chemists discovered a fungus that converts sugar into citric acid, and they were able to
commercialize citric acid manufacturing from this source. As a result, the business acquired competence
in fermentation technology. These abilities were put to use in the mass manufacture of the antibiotic
penicillin during World War II in order to treat wounded Allied soldiers.

1936

• Pfizer became the world's largest manufacturer of vitamin C. Doctor Richard Pasternack created a
fermentation-free process for synthesizing ascorbic acid, or vitamin C.

1938
