DeltaPort – Crucial Advantages for Climate-Friendly and Resilient Logistics

“Interior ports have so much more to offer than plain cargo handling. At our sites, we offer our customers and partners the prospect
to develop, to actively contribute to innovative, sustainable projects, and to build new networks. The geographic location of our ports
and our broadly positioned service portfolio are the ideal prerequisites for the establishment and further development of multi-modal
logistics chains. In addition, we are pushing the expansion of digitization and participating in forward-looking climate projects, which in
turn helps our customers to meet the necessary requirements of the climate goals.”

Ideal Location Aspects for Sustainable Logistics

DeltaPort is the association of the Rhine-Lippe Port and the City Port, located within the municipal area of the City of Wesel, plus the
Port of Emmelsum, located within the municipal area of the City of Voerde. The unification of these port areas created a unique logistics
network for waterway-, rail- and road-based transports on the Lower Rhine that is unrivaled in its form. State-of-the-art superstructures
facilitate the handling of dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and heavy cargo, as well as containerized and temperature-controlled goods.
DeltaPort is constantly developing new land plots for industrial outfits as well as for commercial and logistics companies. DeltaPorts
also gives advice for individual utilization concepts.

DeltaPorts is modern, innovative, and acts in an environmentally-conscious manner. In our national and international research projects,
we analyze issues in the topics: Mobility, digitization, and sustainability, so that we can actively help create a better future.

• Association: Rhine-Lippe Port, City Port of Wesel, Port of Emmelsum

• Logistics Network for Waterway-, Rail-, and Road-Based Transports
• State-of-the-art superstructure for the handling of dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and heavy cargo, as well as containerized
and temperature-controlled goods
• Appealing Surface Area Selection for Industrial Outfits as well as for Commercial and Logistics Companies
• Active environmental management
In the Center of International Flows of Goods – Right Outside the Gates to the Ruhr Area

The three port areas of DeltaPort feature outstanding infrastructural links to domestic and European metropolitan areas. There are
160 million consumers living within a radius of 500 km around Wesel and Voerde. Our appealing surface area selection gives you the
elbow room to develop your company‘s success. The trimodal transport connections are the basis for an ideal design of European
Supply Chains.

• The existing connections to the Federal Freeways (Autobahn) in connection with its excellent location away from the traffic-
congested region on the outskirts of the metropolitan Ruhr Region ensure that your destinations can be reached swiftly.
This is a decisive site advantage of the DeltaPort ports that ensures congestion-free processes in high-quality logistics chains.
Also worth mentioning is the new Wesel Rhine Bridge, which makes for a convenient road crossing over the Rhine, and the
container traffic on the river can pass underneath with a stacking height of 4 containers.

• DeltaPort is located directly on the Rhine River at kilometer 813, near the entrance to the Wesel-Datteln Canal, the gateway
to the German inland canal grid, and ideally situated in close proximity to the ARA ports (Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam).
Rotterdam, for instance, can be reached by barge in only 12 hours (downstream). The reverse trip upstream takes about 16
hours.

• Connections to the Federal Freeway (Autobahn) A3 (Emmerich-Oberhausen), A57 (Nijmegen-Cologne), and A31 (Bottrop-
Emden) are in the immediate vicinity. The Ruhr Area, the Emsland, the Münsterland, and also the Netherlands can therefore
be reached rather quickly.

• The City Port of Wesel and the Port of Emmelsum feature their own rail connections to the main trunk from the Port of
Rotterdam to Germany (Betuwe Line). The Port of
Rhein-Lippe shares the railway infrastructure with the

VISIONS AND PROJECTS
Together Into a Green Future

The climate crisis concerns all of us! – Together with our customers and partners, we are pursing various projects dedicated to the
aspect of sustainability.

In particular, the association that was initiated by DeltaPort, namely “EcoPort 813 - Förderverein Wasserstoff & nachhaltige Energy e.V.“
is pursuing the goal of promoting investments and cooperations in sustainable energy sources. In this pursuit, hydrogen- and CO²-free
energy sources make up the prerequisites for a future energy transformation within the ports of DeltaPort, thereby paving the way
towards climate neutrality. In addition, we, as a tri-modally connected port location, are pursuing the goal of shifting streams of goods
from the road to the rail and waterways, so that the streets can be unburdened and emissions can be reduced by creating less traffic.
This will be supported by expanding digitization at our sites. The targeted exchange of information and data along the transport chain
makes it possible for all involved parties to design their terminal and cargo handling processes more efficiently, and to optimally align
the transports associated with it.
EcoPort 813 Förderverein Wasserstoff & nachhaltige Energie e.V.

The Development Association EcoPort 813 was founded in 2022 to accelerate the development and establishment of industry-
transcending expertises of renewable energies, in particular in the area of hydrogen technology.

Main functions of the association:

• Central hub and platform for the exchange of information and knowledge and for the initiation of potential collaborations.
• Analysis and dissemination of knowledge and support opportunities for hydrogen-based energy systems from businesses and
science. Support for and promotion of projects by matching collaboration partners.

Founding Members:

THYSSEN VERMÖGENSVERWALTUNG
Projects

MAGPIE
The MAGPIE project is an international consortium consisting of 45 partners. Together, they pursue the goal to decarbonize
port-related transport through digitization and automation, and through the utilization of green energy sources.
The port association DeltaPort, within the context of the 10 work packages, is participating in trying out alternative propulsion
systems with the focus on hydrogen and e-mobility for barges, rail, and trucks, but also in the development of a logistics model for
more sustainable, synchro-modal transports for the hinterland connections.

Digitalization
And, within the context of digitization, DeltaPorts is pursuing the goal of optimizing multi-modal cargo handling processes at the
terminals through an AI-based open-source strategy. For this purpose, process-relevant information is being processed and analyzed
to kick off support processes at the port terminal in advance, so that different transportation modes can be synchronized, both, for the
pre-carriage, the on-carriage, the main transport leg, but also for the purpose of optimizing related cargo handling processes.

Goals:
• Maximization of the Efficiency of the Cargo Handling Processes
• Synchronization of the Transport Chain
• Minimization of Waiting Times and Turn-Around Times
• Reduction of Resources
Projects

Log4NRW
The project Log4NRW offers a possibility to unburden the traffic volume on the streets in Northrhine-Westphalia, to deploy truck
drivers more efficiently, and to create an ecological added value for companies. The longer-term perspective calls for building an intel-
ligent container transport network that will multi-modally link interior ports and rail terminals in NRW together. The focus is on shifting
the maritime container volumes and continental load units towards rail & barge. In the future, the tightly-knit west German canal and
rail grid in Germany‘s most densely-populated megalopolis is envisioned to even permit the distribution of small-part B2C shipments.
With the help of this yet to be developed “conveyor belt system”, the direct transport by truck is slated to be reduced by a substantial
margin. It is also meant to bring a better capacity fulfillment to the rail & waterways and contribute to the Traffic Transition.

Cool Corridor
The construction of the “Cool Corridor” between DeltaPort’s lower Rhine ports and the Port of Rotterdam will enable the creation of
more sustainable and more efficient cold chain logistics for the distribution of temperature-controlled goods. For the future, the trans-
port of reefer containers with the help of transport modes barge or rail to the hinterland is envisioned to replace the truck transport
with multi-modal transport and thereby unburdening the congestion clusters on the arterial roads. The deployment of trucks only
“on the last mile” significantly increases the driver deployment efficiency. With this, DeltaPort paves the way for the establishment of
utilizing alternative transport modes for import and export and to make this port location a hub for temperature-controlled cargo.
