Read  unit  1  and  focus  your  study  on  the  sentences  where  you  see  the  
following  information:  

MODULE  1  

1. What  is  a  speech  act?  


2. Can  you  name  ten  types  of  speech  acts?  
3. What  is  a  situation  or  state  of  affairs?  
4. What  functions  or  semantic  roles  can  be  distinguished  in  any  
communicative  act?  
5. What  difference  is  there  between  interpersonal,  representational  
and  textual  meaning?  
6. What  difference  is  there  between  transitivity  structures,  mood  
structures  and  thematic  structures?  

Practice:  do  exercises  1  and  2  and  check  your  answers.  

MODULE  2  

1. What  is  a  unit?  How  are  they  distributed?  


2. Name  the  four  main  types  of  structural  units.  
3. What  is  the  difference  between  a  finite  and  a  non-­‐finite  clause,  and  
an  independent  and  a  dependent  clause?    
4. What  is  a  finite  dependent  clause?  Major  classes.  
5. Main  classes  of  groups  and  words.  
6. What  is  the  difference  between  a  morpheme  and  a  morph?  
7. Clause  elements  within  common  clause  structures.  
8. The  main  syntactic  elements  of  groups.

1. What  is  a  finite  operator  used  for?  


2. How  many  types  are  there?  
3. What  ways  are  there  of  negating  a  clause?  
4. Assertive  vs.  non-­‐assertive  words.  
5. Local  and  transferred  negation.  
6. What  are  coordination,  subordination  and  embedding?
