“Magic Box” inside the magic box are concrete examples of


useful and harmful materials found at home and school.

Divide the class into two groups


Group 1: Useful Materials
Group 2: Harmful Materials

Directions: Let the assigned group of pupils get the materials in


the magic box. There are two boxes: harmful and useful. Each
group will put the exact materials into the assigned task. Is it
harmful or useful?

Ask the following questions: What do you call these materials?


Where do we use these for? Is it important to recognize harmful
and useful?

Harmful Materials
Harmful or hazardous materials or substances that could harm
human health or the environment. Harmful materials may have
these properties: corrosive, flammable or explosive and
poisonous.
Example: Gasoline, Insecticide, Bleach

What is the difference between useful and harmful materials?


To identify useful materials these are the following:
1. Materials that can be recycled.
2. Materials that can be dumped straight into a landfill.
3. Materials that can be used for other purposes.
To identify harmful materials these are the following:
4. Materials that can cause injury
5. Materials that are toxic to us
6. Materials that can pollute the environment easily
E. Developing mastery Activity 1: “Thumbs up/ Thumbs down”
Group activity- Divide the class into two groups.
Directions: Identify whether the pictures are harmful or useful.
Use thumbs up if it is useful, and thumbs down if it is harmful.

Activity 2
Directions: Classify the different materials found in the word
pool below as useful or harmful. Use the following table as a
guide. Afterwards, answer the follow-up questions.

Answer the following:


1. Which materials are useful? When do they become useful?
2. Which materials are harmful? When do they become
harmful?
