1st slide
Words uttered with conviction do not necessarily hold truth. And when something is said, how
you believe it determines its power to create confusion or harm people. Hence, not only should
your words be spoken with much care; you should also be cautious of those that you hear.
2nd slide
What is truth? How do we seek to know it?

WHO IS LADY GREGORY?
Known as one of the pillars of the Irish Literary Renaissance, Isabella Augusta Persse also
known as Lady Gregory, crafted memorable plays depicting the peasant life in Ireland. She also
wrote plays dealing with the history of her country. Her works have remained vital in the
development of Irish literature.
She was born in March 15, 1852 Roxborough, County Galway, Ireland. Even from a very young
age, she already has her own interest towards the field of literature and stories of Irish heroes
inspired by a nanny.
In 1880 she married Sir William Henry Gregory, a neighbouring landowner who had previously
served as a member of Parliament and as governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka); her literary career did
not begin until after his death (1892). In 1896 she met William Butler Yeats and became his
lifelong friend and patron. She took part in the foundation of the Irish Literary Theatre (1899)
and became a director (1904) of the Abbey Theatre, which owed much of its success to her skill
at smoothing the disputes among its highly individualistic Irish nationalist founders.
Her only child with Sir William Henry Gregory, Robert Gregory, was born in 1881. He was killed
during the First World War while serving as a pilot, an event which inspired W. B. Yeats's poems
"An Irish Airman Foresees His Death", "In Memory of Major Robert Gregory" and "Shepherd
and Goatherd".
Lady Gregory wrote or translated nearly 40 plays.
