When road networks that are efficient, durable, and well-planned, it ensures that no one is left
behind in the quest for equitable growth. This is why roads are seen as a necessary component of
achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and bringing communities together.
We were not surprised to see that Bangladesh has the second-worst roads in Asia, according to
the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Index 2017-2018. While Singapore has
the best road infrastructure in terms of size and condition, Bangladesh is placed 113th among
Asian countries, trailing only Nepal. Recently in Bangladesh, a new $735 million national
highways program is focusing on renovating 260 kilometers of current highway network. The
project's goal is to promote regional connectivity, logistical efficiency in the western region, and
Bangladesh's road sector administration.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved total 11
projects involving an overall estimated cost of TK 37,507.22 crore. One of these projects is
upgradation of Ashuganj River Port-Sarail-Dharkhar-Akhaura Land Port Highway to four lanes
National highway with TK 5,791.60 crore. The implementation period of this project was from
April 2017 to June 2022 but this term has been extended once till June 2022 without any increase
in expenditure. The first amendment has been suggested at a cost of TK 5,791.60 crore, up 62.33
percent or TK 2,223.75 crore, due to the increased inclusion, quantity, and cost reduction of
some additional project components. Furthermore, until June 2025, the implementation term has
been extended by three years.
As a result of this project, not only uninterrupted road connectivity with Bangladesh and the
northeastern states of India will be increased but also the socio-economic condition of the project
area will be improved. According to the project's amendment plan, a total of 50.56 kilometers of
roadway between Ashuganj river port and Akhaura land port will be extended to four lanes with
separate services lanes for slow moving vehicles on both sides. The project connects a 651 km
roadway (existing width 5.5m) from Ashuganj river port to Dhaka-Sylhet highway (N-2) to
Ashuganj. In addition, from Ashuganj to Sarail, the Dhaka-Sylhet national highway (N-2) is
11.56 kilometers long (existing width is 7.32 m). The projected roadway must be built in order to
promote bilateral and sub-regional trade with India and other nations in the region.
