2022 AWRF PIE and General Meeting Success!
Well, we did it!!! The first AWRF in-person
meeting in 2-1/2 years! Technically you did it,
as yours truly got sick the Friday before the
meeting. Thank you to Vice President Patrick
Shire for covering for me. A big thank you to all
of our members who came to the meeting, as well
as all the hard work accomplished by the Board
of Directors and JAGwire (AWRF Management
Team) who combined efforts to make this
meeting a huge success. From all the reports it
sounded like I missed one heck of a meeting.
We started out Sunday with the inaugural
“Emerging Leaders” cocktail reception. This is a
group led by Mike Poroo, Luke Staten and Easton
Schlender. It is for members 40 years old and
younger, formed to help get the next generation
of members involved in all aspects of AWRF. It
was an absolute success with over 80 members
attending. I look forward to watching the
benefits this group will add to our organization
and seeing the membership of the Emerging
Leaders continue to expand. Nice work folks. Any
interested members/companies should reach
out to Luke (l.staten@vanbeest.com) or Easton
(easton.schlender@cortlandcompany.com) with
interest in how to get involved.
Monday, we started the day with a Workout
Class - Morning Run organized by (QHSE-Health
Committee Chair) Celena Moses. Then we
kicked off our PIE which was very successful.
We had 90 exhibitors with positive feedback
regarding the open layout and different booth
size options. We also sold out all 8 “Spotlight”
spots. The Cowboy Hat Fitting, Whiskey Tasting,
Shoeshine and Golf Simulator were all very well

Committee Chairs) did a great job organizing this, as
well as all the virtual PIE’s during the last 2 years.
Tuesday was a very busy day. The Programs
Committee, headed by Terry Driscoll, put on an
impressive morning meeting. Speakers Lisa Ryan,
Ross Shafer, Tom Eicher and Mitchem Boles were
all very well received. We finally launched the AWRF
Accreditation Program and signed the agreement
with LEEA. This has been a tremendous effort by
Past Presidents Brett Woodland, Knut Buschmann,
Jeff Gilbert (also AWRF Chief Executive) and the
Technical Committee chaired by Paul Boeckman and
cochaired by Tim Klein.
We recognized thirty-three Milestone Members
in the 10, 20, 30 and 40-year categories. In addition,
we approved 10 new members which is the most I
can remember being approved at one time since I’ve
been a BOD member. Great job by the Membership
Committee Chairs Aaron Bohnert and Brian Dewey.
Emily Gilbert and Caren VanZant organized the
Tuesday Casino Night Gala, and it was off the charts!
The reports I’ve heard from members and BOD
members were terrific. Donnie Bordelon (VanBeest)
is still checking his tickets. We raised $14,260.00
for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. What a
fantastic night for a very special cause. Thank you all
for your generosity.
We finished up Wednesday with our Networking
Golf Tournament organized by Hugh Yoder.
Ninety-two players attended and we also had
11-hole sponsorships. The sponsorships also
benefited St. Jude.
Have a fun and safe summer and I look forward to
seeing everyone in Philadelphia October 16th – 19th.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet asked: whether it is better to
bear those ills we have or fly to others we know not of

have emerged from a two year pandemic, walking,
crawling and limping, only to find themselves in
a new world far from the raptures of the biblical
revelations. Currently the world of commerce is
besieged by the rhythms and crossroads of supply
chain disruptions, extreme political dissonance,
global conflicts and inflation, with expectations
of recession. So, we ask ourselves how best to
direct the specialties of the lifting, rigging and load
securement industry to survive, sustain, succeed
and prosper. Most certainly, government should
be helping through regulatory relief, lower taxes
and the promotion of affordable access to health
care. Red tape should be reduced by applying
cost-benefit analysis and risk assessment before
adopting burdensome administrative hurdles.
Paramount should be the understanding that
job promotion and growth in the private sector
is the backbone of a free society’s economy.
The following unrelated segments are
examples of the vagaries and contradictions
facing our industry today which inevitably
affect strategic business planning.
China
The Chinese economy is expected to grow at a
reduced rate of about four and one-half percent in
the near term rather than a healthy six plus. The
country’s intractable relationship with Russia has
eroded already stressed U.S. ties. One burgeoning
example of the deterioration of U.S.-China relations
is evident in the South China Sea where Beijing has
totally militarized three artificial islands by equipping
them with antiaircraft and anti-vessel missiles as
well as well as offensive and defensive aircraft.
These moves, in spite of President Xi’s foreign policy
pronouncements to the contrary, have the intended
effect of power displays with the possible unintended
consequences of intimidating China’s tenuous
allies (current and prospective) in and around the
Spratly archipelago where Mr. Xi now claims full
dominion. While U.S. aircraft and ships refuse to
acknowledge such sovereignty, each American
sortie and incursion ramps up global tensions.

Another expanding example of declining Sino-American
relations is evident in the tariff wars between the two
countries. The U.S. is increasingly concerned that China is
illegally circumventing U.S. solar tariffs by diverting export
sources to Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand where
Chinese businesses manufacture a large majority of solar
component exports. Although the EU terminated tariffs on
solar panels in 2018, the U.S. imposes three separate duties.
While the issue of solar powered conversion remains under
discussion within U.S. business and political circles, our
country is currently producing the most costly photovoltaic
systems available. The underlying tariff battles with China
have noticeably exacerbated tensions between the two
nations as well as the price of goods flowing between them.
A new mitigating factor in China’s hard line policies is
Premier L. Keqiang, second in command, whose influence has
resulted in an easing of bank loans to real estate developers and
home purchasers, a reduction in the regulatory bureaucracy
and a resumption of manufacturing. It seems that somehow
he has been able to unlock President Jinping’s lockdown.
NATO
The prospective admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO
has received high praise from most western bloc countries.
Applications are expected in late May with full approval within
a year absent unresolved objections. A defensive encirclement
of Russia, while confrontational, is deemed essential to the
security of NATO members. As expected Vladimir Putin’s foreign
ministry threatens retaliation “both of a military-technical and
other nature.” Both Sweden and Finland have sophisticated
armed forces and weapons industries and Finland already spends
the recommended two percent of GNP on defense. Sweden is
progressing toward the percentage target with concentration
on modernized naval vessels and aircraft. Stockholm should
meet the percentage target by 2028. To Putin’s chagrin,
Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine (where 3,500 civilians have
been killed and 14 million displaced) has only strengthened
NATO resolve. The alliance now aims to bolster its defensive
capabilities with the addition of the two new applicants, neither
of which chose to join during the Cold War. Admission to
NATO requires ratification by its current membership of thirty
countries, none of which has expressed significant opposition
to bringing Finland and Sweden on board except Turkey.
In mid-May Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell led a
delegation to the Baltic region to demonstrate U.S. support for
the new applicants. Declaring Sweden and Finland “important
additions” to NATO, Leader McConnell requested President

Biden to officially classify Russia as a sponsor of terrorism,
conjuring up familiar cold war images of Joseph Stalin’s
pogroms. Speaking to the press in Stockholm, McConnell
predicted full compliance by Sweden and Finland with
NATO’s defense preparedness goals. Opposition has
been expressed by President Erdogan of Turkey for
allegedly harboring dissident political factions hostile to
his regime. A Turkish official has stated that following
talks with the new applicants, Ankara will not agree
to admission unless specific steps are taken. An eight
hundred mile border separates Finland from Russia.
Durham Investigation
The first trial arising from Special Prosecutor John
Durham’s investigation into unsubstantiated claims of
Trump-Russia collusion involves charges against attorney
Michael Sussman for allegedly lying to the FBI about the
identity of his clients. Pleading not guilty, he claims he was
merely acting as a concerned citizen in implicating Trump.
According to Durham’s sources, however, he failed to
disclose that he was in fact acting on behalf of the Hillary
Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee
in promoting the collusion theory. Related charges
have been filed against Igor Danchenko, a Brookings
Institution employee who contributed to the now infamous
Steele dossier by portraying anti-Trump gossip as valid
intelligence. Christopher Steele, who once ran the British
MI6 department in London, has inevitably lost credibility in
beltway circles along with his client, Fusion GPS. Until the
real story came out, many eager journalists lauded the FBI
investigation as Trump’s downfall in the 2016 presidential
election. But it was instead FBI Director James Comey and
other FBI leaders who spiraled toward dismissal for their
roles in proffering the unverified Steele dossier to obtain a
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court order
to spy on Trump’s foreign policy adviser, Carter Page.
Although Mr. Durham’s investigation implicates certain
Clinton aides in the disinformation scandal, campaign
spokespersons deny knowledge of Fusion’s verification
shortcomings. Moreover, part of the Sussman defense
is an attempt to convince the Court that in spite of his
ignominious misrepresentations about the identity of
his clients, the FBI was aware of the real connection
based on their review of subpoenaed communications.
Nonetheless the prosecution reminds the Court that a lie
is a lie. On May 19th, an FBI witness and former general
counsel for the Bureau testified that he would have

viewed the Sussman allegations more skeptically if the
true attorney-client relationship had been disclosed.
Another witness, Robby Mook, policy adviser to the
2016 Clinton campaign, testified that unvetted claims
of a surreptitious liaison between candidate Trump
and Alpha Bank of Russia were channeled to the
press. According to Mook, the decision to leak the
information was made by a group of four campaign
confidants including Mook, Jake Sullivan (currently
national security adviser to President Biden) and two
others with the approval of candidate Hillary Clinton.
Tax Policy
Economics 101: less pandemic spending and reduced
increases in other government outflow equals smaller
deficits for the U.S. Failure of the administration’s
so-called “Build Back Better” legislation in the
Senate highlighted the government’s spending spree
interruption. As anticipated, Senators Joe Manchin (D-
WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) came to the rescue to
cross party line voting in opposition to the bill. In addition,
as reported by the Wall Street Journal, tax revenue
through April grew approximately thirty-nine percent
($843B) to nearly three trillion dollars over the period of a
year while individual income taxes rose sixty-eight percent
($698B) and corporate levies were up twenty-one percent
($38B) caused by economic expansion and inflation.
Why then, one asks, does this country need a standard-
breaking federal income tax increase over today’s high
rates to be added to all the other assessments borne
by the average working or retired American citizens?
Postscript
Pondering Hamlet’s eternal question (paraphrased
above in italics), we ask ourselves whether our
government, which is theoretically designed to help
its citizens, is making things better or worse. We
have the tools to analyze the “ills” we face today in
the short term, but who is looking after our future?

The PIE itself seemed to have stepped up another gear from what I remember in Cleveland so well done to you, Emily and the rest of your team.
I really enjoyed it especially the talks they were very insightful and relevant to the changings in the way we do business today. I think the
emerging leaders program is a great thing to push, we are having the same issues all around the world with attracting younger talent into
the industry; I know when I was on the LEEA board they were talking about the same things. I joined that at 29 years old (the youngest board
member ever to be there) it was a huge eye opener for me and I learnt so much from the older generation. I have spoken to Mike @ SWOS and
offered up any support I can give to that program, hopefully I can be of help.

The AWRF Technical Committee, like everyone else
has been on a long journey with an uncertain end. The
Covid Pandemic began in early 2020. During this time
The AWRF and The Technical Committee have rolled
and adapted to new information and technologies;
zoom, google meetings, Work from Home (WFH) to
name a few. And sadly, lost a long time Sub-Committee
Chairman and friend, Mark Kowalick. Mark was
chairman of The Web Sling Sub Committee for many
years. We miss you Mark, RIP.
The Technical Committee has continued to meet as
a group and provide technical information to members
via Webinars and Virtual Trade Shows covering ASME
B30 Standards and AWRF Recommended Practices

May is Motorcyle Safety Awareness Month and with gas prices on the rise more
motorcylists will be taking to the roads. Each year there are hundreds to thousands of
motorcyclists killed or badly injured in crashes due to distracted vehicle drivers.
Here are a few things individuals, can do to protect themselves and motorcyclists in
possible deadly crashes.
• Always pay attention to your surroundings from front to back.
• Avoid momentary distractions such as answering mobile phone, changing
radio station or picking something up from the floor or compartment.
• Look closely at roadway intersections.
• Take a double look before changing lanes and use turn signals.
• Keep distance between vehicle and motorcyclists if traveling behind them.
• When passing make sure there is plenty of room before passing to avoid clipping.
• Make sure objects in the back of pick up trucks are securely stored so they
do not fly out.
It only takes a second to take a life with distracted driving BUT it can be
avoided if we would take that second and make the right choice to value life.
When we practice “value life” while driving it eventually becomes part of us
and we help save lives.

Mental Health In The Workplace Today

Mental Health in the workplace today can
have many different meanings depending on
the individual. This could include emotional,
psychological and social well-being which
affects how we think, feel and act. Our mental
health is very important in every stage of life
and we must find ways through strategies in the
workplace, and home, to combat the stress that
life throws at us.
As the world changed how we work from
office and home, it has brought a lot of anxiety
and uncertainty in workplace. Employees who
thrived by going into the office everyday, being
around people and having that connection, are
now experiencing depression, isolation, and
problems with communication and relationships.
Without the physical and the emotional
environment we have been accustomed to from
the beginning of our careers; it makes it difficult
to stay motivated in our jobs which brings on job
security worries and career growth.
Employers who never had to deal with virtual workers
are behind the curve on putting a policy together for their
employees of the new norm, the “virtual office”. This, within
itself, brings stress throughout the whole company!
What can employers do to safegard the mental health of their
employees going forward with the new workplace?
• Encourage employees to communicate frequently; and to be
honest with the struggles.
• Improve training methods that employees have voiced which
are workplace challenges (Example: On-Line Courses).
• Consider virtual communication outlets for employees to have
immediate access to their supervisors (Example: Skype).
• Keep employees feeling needed and wanted even when they
are doing a good job. Employees do not always see the results
of their hard work and need that reassurance of doing a good
job to stay motivated and for continuing their career with
their company.
Understanding how to manage the mental health concerns in
the new workplace environments is a key factor in companies
for motivating and retaining employees.

It is with great sadness
we announce the
unexpected passing of
Barton Bruce Black, 72,
of Pataskala, Ohio on
Saturday March 5, 2022.
He passed away peacefully
resting in his favorite
recliner.
Bart was born to parents
Margaret Ann Prchal and
Boyd Carson Black, on July 6, 1950, in Ortonville,
Minnesota. He graduated from Heath High School
in 1968, and went on to attend The Ohio State
University, graduating with a degree in Business.
While attending college, he met his future wife and
love of his life, Mary Lisa Manley. Bart and Lisa
enjoyed over 20 years of marriage together and had
two daughters, Christen Anne and Angela Marie.
He began working for his father’s business,
Blacco Splicing and Rigging Loft, in his
adolescence and would go on to become the
second generation owner and president. Bart chose
to continue work at Blacco up until his passing,
having been in the office just days prior. Bart

Toronto, OH, passed away
Friday, April 29, 2022 in
the Valley Hospice Care
Center in Steubenville, OH,
surrounded by his family.
John was born October 21,
1956 in Pittsburgh, PA, son
of the late John J. and Loretta
(Greiner) Miller.
After graduating high school John went on to
Clarion University graduating with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Marketing and Business
Management. John started working as a Salesman

and the employees were welcomed as members of an
extended family.
Bart was an avid lover of music and a talented
guitar player. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles,
time spent in nature, appreciating art, long drives
in the country with his brother Brian, reading the
Bible and spending time with his family. He will be
remembered for his humor, compassion, love, and
care for other people.
He is survived by children Christen Black and
Angela Black, sister Cheryl Skelton, brothers Brian,
Roger and Eric Black (wife Suzanne), niece Rebecca
Black, and nephews Ethan and Aidan Black. He was
preceded in death by parents Margaret Ann and Boyd
Carson Black, and ex-wife Mary Lisa.
The funeral service wase held on Friday March
11th 2022 at 1:00pm at Brucker-Kischler Funeral
Home, 985 North 21st St, Newark OH, with interment
at the Cedar Hills Cemetery followed. Calling hours
was held from noon until the time of service at
Brucker-Kischler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made
to the Food Pantry Network of Licking County.

James B. (Janel) Miller of Madison, WI, and
numerous nieces and nephews.

SLIEDRECHT - Cees and Marjan Boer-van Beest both

joined the Order of Orange-Nassau at the Van Beest
Group at Industrieweg 6 on Tuesday 26 April 2022,
shortly after noon. Marjan Boer is a Member of the Order
of Orange-Nassau and Cees Boer is a Knight of the Order
of Oranja-Nassau because of his exceptional efforts and
great contribution to society in Sliedrecht.

decorations at Van Beest Groep B.V., of which Cees Boer
was CEO until 2020. This beautiful family business is

Talurit Group expands its fuse and tapering machine
offering further by introducing an innovative automatic
model that deliver unmatched efficiency and capacity coupled
with great cutting results and the highest level of safety. The
new model named LKA 14 AM handles wire ropes from 4
to 14 mm in diameter. Being fully automatic it is perfect for
large volumes and serial production - reducing labour and
giving a higher return on investment.
For centuries, Talurit Group have developed and
manufactured equipment and systems for mechanical
splicing of wire and wire rope. Their latest addition to their
broad range of wire rope cutting machines is a unique
and fully automatic annealing machine. The model named
LKA 14 AM features an innovative design that optimizes
performance and efficiency. It is equipped with a state-of-
the-art robotic annealing unit that fuse, twists and pulls
the wire rope to create a tapered finish with fused ends
that keep the wire rope lays intact. With many individual
parameters and settings, the operator can easily tailor the
annealing process to perfection depending on the wire
rope dimension and properties. Each cut is made with high
precision, resulting in uniform ends for entire batches.
The built-in electronic measuring unit has an accuracy of
± 1% and the control system is based on a PLC with a 10”
touchscreen. Thanks to the clear menu system and distinct
interface, the operator can easily access settings and
monitor the process.
The LKA 14 AM combines proven technologies with
modern advances in order to address challenges faced by
customers such as improvement of safety and productivity
and the reduction of life-cycle costs. Its rigid framework,
premium build quality and top-tier components assure

reels go faster. The drivetrain and coiler are enclosed inside the
machine for safety and are footswitch operated. The dynamic braking
reduces reel overspin and there is pneumatic and manual unloading
cylinder. The dimensions of this heavy-duty machine are 93” wide, 95”

OZ Lifting Launches Dynamometer Lever Hoist
OZ Lifting has launched a third lever hoist
range—Dyno-Hoist, a dynamometer-equipped
product from 0.75 to 9 tons capacity.
The Winona, Minnesota-based manufacturer
is the first to bring a lever hoist that includes a
dynamometer to the North American market. It
is available in 0.75, 1.5, 3, 6, and 9 tons capacity,
matching the ranges of the company’s industrial
and premium (overload protected) lever hoist
offerings.
Dyno-Hoist, named by Richard Miller, sales
manager, gives users a real-time reading of the
load (in kilograms or pounds) they are applying
to the hoist, whether it be a lifting or pulling
application. An overload alert is triggered at
126%; the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers requires that when a hoist is repaired
or recertified, it gets tested at 125% of the rated
capacity. OZ Lifting wanted to be sure that the
hoist could be tested to that capacity without
timing out. Against best practice advice, users
could operate it beyond that point, but they would
have no knowledge of the load being applied.
Steve Napieralski, president at OZ Lifting, said:
“There is nothing out there in the marketplace
like this hoist. I don’t think there is a specific
market for it, but we recently displayed it at two
industrial trade shows and there was specific
interest from the aviation industry, as they must
tension parts for testing and need to know the
exact weight. It will be useful in any application
where you need to know the weight of the load
being applied to the hoist. Where you would have
previously needed to use a shackle, dynamometer,
and hoist, with Dyno-Hoist, you gain a significant
amount of headroom because the load cell is an
integral part of the unit.”

OZ Lifting’s industrial line of lever hoists
already offers a good choice if users know
the weight of the load. The premium line,
meanwhile, is based on the same hoist but
has overload protection. This has proved
useful if the load weight is unknown, as
the overload protection will activate at
approximately 50% above the load rating.
Notably, Dyno-Hoist’s dynamometer fitting
itself can retrofit to either of the industrial
or premium lever hoists. If a user has one of
those models, they can purchase the load
cell and complete installation.
The net weight of the units (head only),
is 16.5, 27.94, 45.1, 66, and 96.80 lbs. in
order of capacity, while the effort to lift
the safe working load (SWL) in each
instance is 31.4, 49.5, 72, 76.5, and 81
lbs. The first three models in the range
have one fall of chain and the 6 and
9 tons versions, two and three falls
respectively. Other features include
all-steel construction; steel handle
with rubber grip; zinc-plated load
chain; forged alloy steel hooks;
and fully-enclosed gearing. Dyno-
Hoist meets or exceeds CE, ASME B30.21, and
AS 1418.2 standards. Standard AA batteries offer
a run time of 150 hours, but the product can be
plugged into a 115/1/60 outlet. Each hoist is load
tested and arrives with a test certificate, one-year
warranty, and a free set of latches.

Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF)

Gender and the workplace is a contentious and tricky
subject to cover for a wide audience, situations and
perspectives are as different as fingerprints. I’ve decided
instead to cover my own career and lessons as a female
manager in a primarily male industry. Spending my
entire career in manufacturing, and my entire life as a
female, I don’t have another perspective to see these facts
from, though I try not to let it define me. My career goal
was relatively simple; be the one people come to with
questions, the one to solve problems and find a better
way to work. Whether that meant learning as much as I
can about our ERP system or the shop flow and process,
being female never played an active part in my choices
or my path. There were a few times I encountered a
died-in-the-wool chauvinist who’d call me princess and
promptly ignore me, but luckily those people were never
my bosses. I never felt hindered. Honestly being female
may have helped. That grumpy machinist with 30 years’
experience at gear cutting wasn’t quite so grumpy with
me. I started out as a planner for a company that made
heavy lift machinery for the lumber industry. I’d have
conversations with shop employees and gain information
I could take back to my desk and make a more realistic
plan. Developing relationships and trust with key people
throughout the company, especially the shop floor, turned
a seemingly simple job into a multi-dimensional engine in
which I played an important part.
Male mentors played a fundamental role in the passion

my co-workers had been with the company their entire
careers. The workforce was aging and there was a wealth
of information to gain just by asking. ERP systems
were newer, not trusted, and mainly just used as shells.
The mentors I value now are the ones who would kick
me out to the shop when I’d ask a question, send me
searching for the answer. My most distasteful boss at
the time would force me to run production meetings
filled with owners and managers far more qualified and
experienced than I was. I see now that he was providing
me the tools to sustain in this industry. Mentors came
from all areas. The assembly lead who showed me the
importance of planning and timing for a 30-foot-tall, 80-
ton log stacker with a 3,000-line bill of material, then let
me drive it around the parking lot during testing. The
energetic machinist lead who showed me that enthusiasm
is contagious and leading with a positive attitude can
drastically increase production. The product manager
who, when he decided he was getting close to retirement,
taught me more about winches and machining than I ever
could absorb.
My transition to the forging industry happened at
the right time. That aging workforce at my previous
company had mostly retired, and the fervor and pride
in manufacturing had diluted. Forging holds a frenetic
energy and is filled with lifetime employees. Less
people do more, and the importance of my part in the
process was immediately clear. The general manager
held very high expectations, learning about the product
wasn’t just a bonus of the position, but a requirement
to successfully plan in a forging environment. I have
been constantly learning since I started here nearly 7
years ago with the help of male mentors and allies. My
general manager taught me about scheduling flexibility,
triage in times of crisis, how to manage problems with
grace and diplomacy, and why too much work is a good
problem. My production manager taught me product
flow, the importance of meticulous accuracy, how to lead
by example, and the urgency of anything and everything
crossing my desk. I can’t begin to cover the amount I’ve
learned and continue to learn about forging and metals
manufacturing from these mentors.
Becoming a manager has made me look at how I’ve
been managed in the past and what sort of manager I
want to be, not to mention learning some hard truths
about myself. I’ve spent my entire career identifying

 as a human in manufacturing, not a woman in
manufacturing. Then I became responsible for other
women. I had to review these personal assertions
for the good of my team, and there are differences.
I’ve managed 6 women in this role over the last 4
years, and I apologize if some of these observations
fall under stereotypes, but they are things I’ve
learned and, going back, noticed about myself.
Pay - Women tend to not ask for a raise, they just
leave. I’ve had to learn this the hard way and upped
my retention game since. Reasons for this could vary
from avoiding conflict to the direct and inaccurate line
between self-worth and pay. Looking back, I could not
recall a time I ever asked for a raise. It wasn’t due to
lack of confidence or fear, I just never asked.
Positive reinforcement – I witnessed a co-worker
be constantly criticized by her supervisor, to the
point that she would go home crying. Then I became
her boss. I chose to take a different path in her
management, with hands-on training and more
responsibility. I acknowledged her wins and successes,
provided clear and direct instructions and took
ownership when a misstep was due to a hole in my
own training program. Now she’s a happier and more
productive employee. I’m not saying this works for
everyone, but I like to start here first.
Creating a challenge - This applies to all employees
with potential, not just women, but I find women tend
to get overlooked in this area. Everyone needs to be
challenged to grow. Common qualities in my previous
ineffective supervisors are indifference and a tendency
towards status quo. Common qualities in my most
memorable male mentors are an energetic inclusion
and a challenge to improve, learn or change.
Our industry is still male dominated and, at the
same time, lacking a strong work force to pull from.
I believe there is an untapped resource in female
recruitment for metals manufacturing, and I believe
it’s the responsibility of any company with this labor
problem to get involved. This could include working
with local high schools and community colleges,
preparing marketing and recruitment pamphlets,
subsidizing training programs, being involved in job
fairs, advertising on social media, anything to be
noticed and provide an option and possible direction

to someone who isn’t sure what the future holds.
It’s our responsibility to bring in and entice the new
workforce, male and female, just as much as it’s
our responsibility to bring in sales. Posting an open
position on Indeed doesn’t cut it anymore. Forging
has a heart and an energy that can’t be conveyed in a
job blurb on the internet. The pride and satisfaction
that comes with a successfully completed job, a major
project, a big win, cannot be explained online. Feeling
the ground shake next to the 5,000 lb hammer while
it hits, over and over, turning plain alloy bar into
something much more useful, is enough to entice
anyone to want to be a part of that.
I’m extremely thankful for the mentors and allies
I’ve encountered and worked with during my career,
all of whom thoroughly overshadow any negative
situations. I also believe a large part of my positive
experiences are the choices I made of who to seek
out for assistance and guidance. In lieu of a less-than-
supportive superior, an encouraging, experienced
co-worker can be instrumental in growth and learning.
Developing a network of trusted team members,
and being a trusted team member to others, forges
bonds that extend beyond just the business model and
creates a lifetime network of business contacts and
ultimately, friends.

Locked on Leadership
Do You Have The Presence Of Mind?
You’ve probably said this phrase
yourself, usually when someone does
something unexpected that staves off
a potential disaster. My guess is, if you
are in a leadership position, it has been
said of you more times than your peers.
That’s how you ended up in leadership.
You had the presence of mind to be
effective more times than most.
Being present of mind is a critical
leadership trait. When things go awry,
our team looks to us for guidance or
solutions. To provide this, we need to
have the presence of mind to see what is
happening and come up with a creative
solution or, at least, a path to a solution.
This brings me to my musings and
my point. When I heard the phrase, I
thought “what exactly does it mean,
presence of mind?” and that lead me
down a philosophical path that I feel
compelled to share with all of you.
According to Dictionary.com, presence
is the state or fact of being present, as
with others or in a place. I think this
definition is incomplete. I think it should
ready presence is the state or fact of being
present, as with others or in a place and
time. How many times have you been in
a meeting with someone and they seem
distracted? Their thinking about other
things so while they may be physically
present, they aren’t mentally there. I know
when this happens to me, I’m usually in
one of two places. I’m either somewhere
in the past, thinking about something that
has already occurred, or I’m somewhere
in the future, fretting over what might
happen. Occasionally I find myself
vacillating between the two, thinking about
what has happened and then projecting
ahead worrying about what might happen.
We can’t truly be “present” unless we
are focused on the here and now.
Focusing on the here and now isn’t
always easy. We have a lot of distractions.
When I was running larger companies,
I had to deal with supply problems,
personnel issues, sales issues, admin
issues, etc. Everything that makes
running a business fun and exciting. The
very problems I needed to be present
to handle made it difficult to focus on
as I worried over the implications and

ramifications of the problems that came up.
Back then, I didn’t have a good technique for
being “present” and this resulted in becoming
distracted and problems dragging on.
Today, I have learned to be more present.
There are a number of techniques I’ve learned.
When I started working with my coach, she
taught me a ritual before group meetings.
She had all of us close our eyes, breathing
intentionally, while focusing on our breath.
Some people circle a hand over their head as if
gathering all the parts of themselves from all
the distractions and bringing them together,
then lowering the hand to our chests. Once
we feel totally present, we declare, out loud, I
am present now. While this may seem silly to
some, I found I was much less distracted and
able to be more focused after the little ritual.
Another new habit for me is meditation.
I start each morning, after my coffee of
course, with 30 minutes of meditation.
Meditation has the benefit of allowing me
to practice being present and getting rid of
distractions. Like any skill that you practice,
the more you do it, the better you become.
Of course, some days are better than others
and this, too, is beneficial. When I practiced
other skills, like golf, hockey, martial arts,
playing an instrument, etc., it was always
about improving. This meant if I had a bad
practice, I would fret over it. Meditation is
about doing. There is no good or bad, there
just is doing or not doing. Some days I can get
in a great meditative state and be completely
present. Some days, things pop into my
head. Ideas for the future, regrets from the
past, whatever. On those days I just relax
and let thoughts go. Sometimes they stay,
sometimes they float away. Sometimes great
realizations explode into my consciousness
that provide amazing insights or I conceive
of solutions to problems that have plagued
me. Most of the time, I just relax.
What I have found is when I become
faced with a stressful situation, I’m better
able to be present and not worry about the
implications. I see what is really facing me,
and I can develop an action plan that handles
the situation without a great deal of stress or
anxiety. In other words, I have “the presence
of mind” to see the right thing and do it.

Laclede Chain Taps Melissa Searle

to Head Up New Division
ST. LOUIS, MO.— Laclede
Chain, a leader in American
made industrial chains
and hooks, is creating a
new division, Research
& Product Development
(R&PD). Melissa Searle
has been promoted from
the role of Engineer to
Director of Research and
Product Development
overseeing market and
product specification
research, overseeing requirements and new product
development. Melissa attended Missouri
University of Science and Technology and has
a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation, she started her career at Laclede’s
Maryville, Missouri location experiencing firsthand
the inner workings of their manufacturing facility. This
experience helped prepare her for this new role which
is based out of the corporate office.
Since 1854, Laclede Chain has been dedicated to
pushing development and driving innovation with their
products and this new division and its leadership will
strengthen their technical presence in the industry.
“Melissa has been a key leader in our product
development activities since she has joined the
company in 2016,” said Tim Riley, President/CEO. “I
am convinced that she will bring the rigor, creativity,
and apabilities that this role requires. It is exactly what
we need to take the next step in pursuit of our purpose –

In addition to product development and research,
Melissa will also oversee technical presentations and
papers, technical support of sales and operations
and will represent Laclede in technical trade and
professional organizations (AWRF, ASTM, etc).
They hope to continue to grow the division in the
coming months to expand their product development
capabilities even further.

Caldwell Moon Lander Transporter
Tested, Moved to Houston
A customized 2,500-lb. capacity transport cradle for
a lunar lander, manufactured by The Caldwell Group
Inc., has arrived in Houston. There, Intuitive Machines
will complete the next stage of testing before the lander,
Nova-C, will be sent to the Moon.
When complete, the lander requires highly customized
transportation to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KS)
in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where it will be launched
by a Spacex Falcon 9 rocket. The short and long
base assemblies designed by Caldwell, delivered by
distributor Kennedy Wire Rope & Sling Company Inc.,
meet Nova-C’s requirements for safe transport.
Prior to sending the first cradle onto the next
stage of the process, an in-person inspection by Greg
Vajdos, integrated test and verification lead at Intuitive
Machines; Brian Johnson, senior mechanical design lead,
CSWPA at Iron Ring Technologies; and Dan Mongan,
senior sales engineer/project leader at Caldwell had to
be completed.
The general review of the product before shipment
took place in late March at Caldwell’s facility in Rockford,
Illinois, only once Mongan had overseen the final stages
of polishing. He explained that a final inspection was
necessary to make sure that the product left the facility
to complete customer satisfaction. It was signed off and
boarded a dedicated truck for the trip to Houston.
“Nova-C is Intuitive Machines’ opportunity to return
the United States to the surface of the Moon for the
first time since Apollo 17 in 1972,” said Vajdos. “The
Caldwell stand is an essential piece to accomplishing our
mission and we’re confident that Nova-C will be safely
transported to KSC for launch.”
Next, Intuitive Machines will use a “Nova-C
mass simulator” to load test, and rehearse loading,
unloading, and rotation operations. This test
will provide complete assurance that the cradle
will serve its purpose on the final trip to Florida.
Mongan will be in Houston for that process.
Chris Berland, of RiggRep, a manufacturer’s
representative for Caldwell, has been involved with
the project from the outset, making initial site visits to
Intuitive Machines, upon consultation with Vajdos.
He recalled: “Greg and I had the initial, exploratory
discussions of how to safely lift, manipulate, and
transport the lunar lander between three different
locations—their facility, the Spacex site in Florida, and
the test site.”

Nova-C, will be sent to the Moon.
A program was planned that started with the equipment
that was required at each location (e.g., overhead cranes,
hoists, overhead clearance, mobile cranes, forklifts, rigging,
etc.) and the potential restrictions or limitations (e.g., bay
door dimensions, DOT specifications, timeframe, budgets).
However, the "elephant in the room,” as Berland called it,
was that there was no standard piece of equipment that
could safely lift, manipulate, and transport the lunar lander.
Berland continued: “I showed Greg a standard Caldwell
coil upender to discuss the functionality, and this led to
a napkin sketch of the first concept of what an upending,
transport cradle for a lunar lander might look like. This
information was conveyed to Dan, and this is where the
talented engineers from both Caldwell and Intuitive took
the wheel and began having the first of many discussions on
how to bring the project to life.”
“Caldwell’s on-time delivery of Intuitive Machines’ lunar
lander transport cradle affords us the time needed to test
and rehearse loading and unloading procedures,” said
Vajdos. “From design to delivery, the collaboration between
Intuitive Machines and Caldwell will ensure Nova-C is
transported from Houston to Cape Canaveral safely before
launching to the Moon.”
RiggRep’s Berland said: “The nature of the product and its
ultimate destination certainly made this project unique. It's
not too often we have a looming ‘launch date’ to deal with
in our world, but we enjoyed both the challenges and the
opportunity. We're excited to view the equipment in action.
It was an honor to be approached to assist with this project.
It speaks volumes to Caldwell's reputation and ability to
offer creative solutions for challenging applications. The
project was both meaningful and interesting, and I am
confident to say everyone involved learned something. The
can-do attitude of Caldwell is contagious—and I am proud to
be part of the team.”
