CN3121 Process Dynamics and Control Project 2011-12

Objectives: Cooperative or collaborative learning is a team process where members support and rely on each other to achieve an agreed-upon goal. The classroom is an excellent place to develop teambuilding skills you will need later in life. Project work allows you to practice interpersonal as well as technical skill. It helps to encourage teamwork and collaboration to improve your leadership and learning abilities. Cooperative/collaborative learning is interactive and as a team member, you:

develop and share a common goal contribute your understanding of the problem; questions; insights and solutions respond to, and work to understand, others' questions, insights and solutions. are accountable to others, and they are accountable to you are dependent on others, and they depend on you

Organization: Students should group themselves into teams of four/five members. Each team should identify a team coordinator who should ensure that the members of his/her team meet and interact during the execution of the project. All members of the team are expected to work together on all aspects of the given problem. The project is divided into two parts: Part I (Process Dynamics) and Part II (Process Control). While the problem statement for Part I is specified here, Part II will be defined in October. The reports should represent the unaided original work of each team. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated. Report Format: The final report for Part I should be typed on A4 sheets using 12 pt Times New Roman with 1.5 line spacing. Margins of 1 on all sides should be maintained. A suggested format for your report is: Cover page Contents Abstract Introduction Results and Discussion Conclusions Contributions References Appendix

The report should include graphs, tables, computer codes (including Simulink screenshot) developed by the teams, appendices and references. A hard copy of the report for Part I should be submitted directly to your lecturer Dr. Lee DongYup (Room E5-03-16) by 6pm on 17th October 2011. Late submission without valid reasons will carry a penalty of 3 marks per day of delay.

Problem statement for Part I: Consider the following nonlinear ODEs that describe a nonisothermal CSTR.

dc A q(c Ai c A ) Vk (T )c A dt dT VC wC (Ti T ) (H R )Vk (T )c A UA(Tc T ) dt where k (T ) k0e E / RT (min-1; T is K) V

Note: the schematic diagram of the CSTR is depicted in Fig. 2.6 on page 28 of textbook (SEMD). The assumptions are as follows: (1) Perfectly mixed reactor (2) Constant volume, constant fluid properties and constant heat of reaction (3) Input variables Ti, Tc and q are constant Your tasks involve the followings: (a) Using the information (i.e., process parameters and nominal operating conditions) specified for your team (sent by email), calculate the output response of the exit or reactor temperature (T) for both +20% and -20% step changes in the inlet concentration (cAi) from nominal condition by solving nonlinear ODEs via Matlab/Simulink# (b) Plot the temperature responses and determine process gains for both cases (for positive and negative step changes). (c) Derive a transfer function model relating T to cAi. (d) Repeat steps (a) and (b) using the transfer function model obtained in step (c). (e) Repeat steps (a), (b) and (d) for both +10% and -10% step changes in cAi from nominal condition. (f) Corresponding to the responses calculated in step (a), obtain the model parameters based on SODT model approximation. You must apply the following two available methods: (i) regression of step response data and (ii) an empirical method of your choice. (g) Repeat steps (a) and (b) using SODT model. (h) Compare, analyze and discuss your results (i) Draw suitable conclusions.
