STAT 240: ASSIGNMENT

1. Show that in SRSWOR the sample mean y is an unbiased estimator of

i. The population proportion P and derive it’s variance.
ii. The population mean Y

2. Determine the following probabilities assuming SRSWOR.

i. The probability that a specific sampling unit is included in a sample of size n
drawn from a population of size N
ii. The probability that a specific sampling unit is included in a sample of size n
at the
iii. The probability of a specific set of sampling units being included in the
sample

3. A simple random sample of 15 households was drawn from a city area containing 15,000
households. The number of persons per household on the sample were as follows:
3 3 4 7 4
2 5 3 6 3
1 8 5 2 4
i. Estimate the average number of persons in the area and find the standard error of
this estimate.
ii. Estimate the variance of the number of persons in each household
iii. Estimate the total number of persons in the area
iv. Construct a 95% CI for estimate in part (iii) above
v. If 9 out of the 15 households had at least one member of a household with a college
degree, estimate;
a) The proportion of households that had at least one member with a college degree
and hence or otherwise construct a 90% confidence interval for this estimate.
b) The total number of households that had at least one member with a college
degree.

4. A cooperation wishes to obtain information on the effectiveness of a business machine.

A number of division heads were interviewed and asked to rate the machine on a
numerical scale. There are three divisions in the cooperation and cost for each division
varies. The co-operation is allocated Kf 2,000 and a set up cost of administering the
survey is Kf 100. The following table gives the cost per interview, appropriate variances
of the ratings and the stratum sizes.
Assuming that all the money is spent, estimate the:
i. Sample size n
ii. Optimum allocation of the sample sizes
iii. Proportional allocation of the sample sizes
iv. Neyman allocation of the sample sizes

5. The unbiased estimator of the population proportion P in stratified random sampling

is given by

p st = y st

i. Proof the unbiasedness of p st

ii. Show that the variance of p st is given by

( Ni − ni )
( )
k
pi qi
var p st =  wi2 , where p i = y i
i =1 Ni ( ni − 1)
6. A school desires to estimate the average score that may be obtained in a reading
comprehension exam for students in the sixth grade. The school’s students are grouped
into three tracks, with the slow learners in track I, average in track II and those
considered first learners in track III. The results are given below.

Track I Track II Track III

N1 = 52 N 2 = 72 N 3 = 36
n1 = 16 n2 = 20 n3 = 14

i) Calculate yst and V ( yst )

ii) Estimate the total score obtained by all such students.

iii) Compute the 98% confidence interval for the mean estimate in (i) above and further
estimate the total score.
