I want you to think of being on a ship looking for land.
You find a strange land that no one has every seen. As
you explore you realize that you are not the only person
on this strange land. There are actually villages and
families covering this land. What do you do? Do you
try to learn about the land from these people or do you
try to claim it as your own? What would you do if you
were these villagers? Would you help the newcomers or
would you fight for them to leave?
Big Idea
• Where was John Cabot the first to sail to? Where did he
think he had sailed to?
• What was so special about this place?
• Who did the King of France send to explore Canada?
What did he find?
• What caused the war between Spain and England? Who
won? What was the result of this victory?
