Preface

This book was written for EFL/ESL learners as well as native English speakers who wish to
migrate to or work in English-speaking countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia and
New Zealand, and who wish to score 7 or more in the IELTS academic writing module. The
book grew out of the author’s some 20 years of English language teaching experience in
Australia and New Zealand, particularly preparing students to sit the IELTS test. The purpose of
the book is to provide candidates with the proficiency, strategies and skills as well as the practice
essential to sitting the IELTS academic training module.

The book consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to Task 1, focusing the development of
proficiency and skills needed to achieve 7 or above. The first part covers key strategies, skills as
well as language resources for writing an academic report based on a Task 1 topic. The second
part deals with the challenges faced by candidates seeking to score 7+ in Task 2. The third part
provides 7 sets of writing tests. Also included in the appendices is some general information on
the IELTS test. Materials on writing rubrics and generic structures are abundant in this book.

Depending on how well a candidate masters the content and techniques introduced in this book,
the results may vary. A good, solid command of this book, coupled with the practice
provided, will lead a candidate all the way to Band 7 and beyond.
