I was hired ostensibly to create a new school for gifted and twice-exceptional students grades 5-12. Several of us were hired to start up

on staff. Because of my skill set, I have become the school's informal communications specialist, creating and documenting protocols,
performing marketing and outreach, and designing handbooks for employees, parents and school administrators. I work closely and
empathically with struggling parents who seek a safe haven for their children, and i have hired some amazing teachers who are improving
the quality of life for this disenfranchised and often hidden population.

Re: Academic Support Program Manager

Dear Members of the Hiring Committee,

Four months ago I boarded a plane from San Jose, Costa Rica, heading back to Montana. I
had just concluded what I thought was the grande finale of my academic career—teaching
English in a therapeutic boarding school—and my heart was full. As my plane flew north, I
mentally replayed the graduation speeches of some pretty wonderful kids, all of them
thanking us for participating in the most difficult experience of their lives. Tears abounded
as they honored us, their teachers, advisors, and therapists, attesting to the transformative
power of relationship and trust, of introspection, recognition, and vulnerability.

And then I thought of Matthew, a gifted 17-year old, who took the stage at graduation and
invited me up to receive a teaching award. He hugged me and then announced, voice
breaking, that his first novel would most assuredly be dedicated to me. And so mid-flight,
even though I had thought that that job would probably be my last, I realized that after all of
these years, in so many different roles in so many different learning environments, I cannot
stop being enticed by the reward, grace and dignity of this work. So here I am, writing you a
cover letter, smiling, because I think I knew all along that I would end up pursuing an
opportunity such as this.

To be clear, I did not find your position announcement by accident: When I was working on
UCLA’s methamphetamine treatment project, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Hawaii
many times to attend conferences and work as an evaluator of the good work being done by
our Oahu-based research team. I fell in love with Hawaii and have dreamed since of
relocating and finishing out my career in paradise!

So last week I decided to take a look at your Website to see if you had any academic roles of
interest. I knew when I read your job description that I might have found my next
adventure. As evidenced by my resume, my career in teaching and administration spans
several decades. I am an accomplished writer, teacher, tutor, and project coordinator.

And so here I am, enthused, energized and armed with some valuable insights into this post-
pandemic generation, ready to return to higher education, hopefully to contribute my talents
to the good work of your school. I will look forward to hearing from you!

Warmly and gratefully,

Kathryn Sabol
