INTRODUCTION
We are proposing to study the feminism of Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s movie Little Women.
The basis of our interest in this topic is a feminist named Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s movie
Little Women. We are trying to learn and understand about Jo March’s utterances and its
possibility to make use of it to teach English especially to teach vocabulary in senior high
school. Our overall goals are to know well Jo March’s utterances by Jo March related to
feminism value and to know its possibility to be the teaching media of especially vocabulary
teaching in senior high school. The factors in our own history and experiences are the facts
that most of the high school students’ vocabulary mastery is still relatively unsatisfactory.
Our specific research questions is to know what utterances does Jo March deliver which
depict liberal feminism value and how is the application of Jo March’s utterances in teaching
vocabulary for senior high school students.

BACKGROUD FOR STUDY

The background of this topic is the importance of understanding a character named Jo March
and her belief, and this background is important to understand because as would be English
teachers introducing feminism to our students is indispensable. The context of previous work
that has been done is feminism found in May Alcott’s novel Little Woman. (Desmawati, E.
2018. Analysis of Feminism in The Novel of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Journal of
Language and Literature, 91). The topic can be related to the media of English teaching in
Senior High School. We can situate my study within related professional literature by finding
or searching the keywords of my study, such as characters, utterances, feminism, and movie
based on a novel.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH CONTEXT

We are going to conduct this study both in the classroom of a senior high school and in an
online learning media such as Google Classroom and Zoom Meeting. We will gather the data
from Greta Gerwig’s movie Little Women and students of senior high school. The specific
context in which the study will be conducted are in the classroom environment and
curriculum or coursebook. We are gathering data firstly in the movie focusing on Jo March’s
utterances, secondly in the classroom focusing on students answering questionnaire, and
thirdly in the coursebook focusing on the vocabulary lesson. The students and teacher will be
the participants in this research. We will select the participants by doing preliminary research,
i.e. visiting the school and interviewing the teacher. The relationship to the teacher is that he
or she is our collaborative researcher. Meanwhile, the relationship to the students is that they
are the subject of our research. We need to gain permission from the headmaster and teacher.
First, we provide ourselves with a formal letter from the head of English department and the
dean of the faculty. Then, we go to see the headmaster and teacher. We will assure the
participants or students that they will be protected from harm and that they will not be
exposed to risks by telling them that we are bound to the scientist’s code of ethics in
conducting the research.

METHODS FOR DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Descriptive-qualitative research is our general approach to research design. We choose this
approach by considering the data which is qualitative in nature, and we choose this approach
because we will not expect the result of this research. Instead, we will only describe just the
way the phenomena occur. Important kinds of data we will explore are the utterances of Jo
March’s characters related to feminism values and the students answering questionnaire
related to vocabulary teaching. Specific methods of data collection we will use are field
notes, teaching journal, and interviewing. Our tentative plans for data analysis are finding
theories related to feminism value and examining screenplay, subtitles, and utterances
simultaneously. We plan to organize and analyze data as we collect by selecting and coding
the data. In selecting, we divide the data into two categories, i,e. utterances related to
feminism value and those are not related to such value. In coding, we make use of time
keeper or the minutes/seconds found in the movie player (such as GOM or the like). We
expect to spend doing the investigation of feminism values found within Jo March’s
utterances in about a week.

IMPORTANCE AND POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students and teachers’ interests are served by this research. Researcher benefits this research.
The study's potential significance for my classroom or local context for education or society
as a whole is introducing and proposing a new and interesting media in English teaching in
Indonesia. Teachers and administrators might care about this study. We might share the
findings in the education field with English language teaching (ELT) professionals. A report
of this research might be published in an educational journal.
