Course Title: English for Communication I 英語溝通技巧(一)

Aim : This is a foundational English course specially designed to introduce


effective strategies for the 4 communication skills, including listening,
speaking, reading and writing; and to provide intensive grammar revisions
in order to strengthen students' English usage ability and to prepare them
for further development in English at post-secondary level.

Learning
Outcomes : Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
a. apply a variety of grammatical structures to communicate clearly;
b. use effective listening strategies for processing different types of spoken
discourse;
c. apply features of spoken language (pronunciation, stress, intonation and
rhythm) and a variety of grammatical structures for designated
communicative purposes;
d. extract and demonstrate comprehension of specific information in relevant
context; and
e. describe different situations and express opinions that are appropriate to the
purpose and message.

Teaching and Learning Methods:
This course will be taught in lecture and workshop formats. Authentic materials, simulated
situations and interactive learning approaches are adopted to facilitate the learning and teaching
of the four language skills, grammar, vocabulary and a variety of text types which provide
meaningful contexts for the learning and purposeful use of specific language items. Students
will be encouraged to participate actively in various language learning activities. Assignments
will be provided for students on a regular basis to consolidate their learning. Students are also
strongly encouraged to continue language learning beyond the classroom and build up a
stronger sense of ownership of their learning. And they are strongly encouraged to participate
in extra-curricular language activities organized by the English Language Learning Resources
Centre.

The assessment scheme of this course is 100% continuous assessment. Students are required to
