Chapter I

Introduction

Does writing a research paper really difficult for students? A research paper
is intended to evaluate a student's ability to comprehend a subject, gather
data, analyze it, and compose an extensive essay. Students frequently lack
these abilities, which eventually results in underperformance, for a variety of
reasons. Today, there are alternatives to writing research papers, such as
purchasing research papers from online authorities. However, there are some
critical components of a research paper that must be mastered for a student to
achieve exceptional grades. Let's discuss a few of the factors that make
writing papers for students challenging.

How does writing a research paper affect the world? From healthcare and
Education in technology and social policy, research is essential to our daily
lives. It is a method of research that aims to solve issues, increase knowledge,
and improve our comprehension of the world. For society to advance and for
the creation of novel concepts, innovations, and technologies, research is
crucial. This article will go through the value of research in many sectors and
how it benefits society.

discussion. It is a research skill that is essential for navigating the research
landscape and identifying a research void. According to Vehviläinen (2009),
students should be able to independently research the subject.

Researchers need to exercise caution when conducting their studies. To

finish each phase of the activity, they must allot plenty of time. They must put
in a specific number of hours per week in the library and be diligent. There are
some things that take longer than expected, and there are some stages in
research work that are more challenging than the researchers anticipate, so
they need to add a few extra hours or weeks before the deadline. In short,
there are unforeseen challenges and issues that could result in
academic failures (Trimmer, 1992).

In this study, we want to look into the challenges that Grade 12 ABM
students faced when they were writing their research papers at Mary the
Queen College's Rizal Campus. By doing this, we can identify the challenges
that these students face because we want to know what they faced as well as
how they overcame them.

The goal of this study is to understand the challenges that grade 12 ABM
students encountered while writing their research papers at Mary the Queen
College's Rizal campus, as well as the solutions they adopted to overcome
those challenges. By doing this, it will assist other students who are unaware
of those issues and researchers in gaining an understanding of the expanding
body of literature in difficulties when writing research papers.

Background of the Study

ABM students in grades 12 encounter difficulties in writing research

papers due to a lack of research abilities, a limited awareness of research

methodology, and time management issues. These challenges can cause

confusion, incorrect results, and procrastination, all of which have a negative

impact on the quality of their research and overall academic achievement. To

overcome these obstacles, students should concentrate on improving their

research and time management skills.

Another issue in preparing a research paper is locating evidence to

support your claims. It is a common reason for failure for the majority of

students. A conclusion or theory from a source can be used as evidence.

Sources are necessary to support and expand on the concept you have

provided.

Robert Hauptman (2005, 115) writes: “Perhaps the single most important

point is to have the desire to discover something new and share it with

readership”. In view of the fact that there are many students who have the

potential to write a research paper but are unable to do so owing to a lack of

guidance and unfamiliarity with the format and process of producing a

research paper.

By recognizing these obstacles, educators and institutions can develop

tactics and support systems to help students effectively overcome these

obstacles. Furthermore, resolving these issues can improve the overall quality

of education and students' academic progress.

This study aims to shed light on the common challenges that 12th grade

ABM students of Mary the Queen College Rizal Branch face in developing

research projects. There are lots of brilliant students, who have the abilities to

write, but, as we know in every aspect of life we need guidance to do some

special things like a research paper Javed (2019).

Theoretical Framework

The Writing Process, as defined by the NCTE and IRA (1996), includes “the

many aspects of the complex act of producing a written communication,

specifically, planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing” (p.77). In a

Community of Writers: Teaching Writing in the Junior and Senior High School

119881. ZemeLman and Daniels advocated using the writing process as a

way to improve students’ writing skills. They reported that improvement in

students’ writing performance is related to the following elements: regular and

substantial practice at writing; instruction in writing process strategies;

exposure to models of writing in process, including skilled adult writers and

classmates; peer and/or teacher collaboration in every stage of the writing

process; and one-to-one teacher-student writing conferences. Zemelman and

Daniels pointed out that research studies have shown that the constant

marking of every error on a student’s paper is not helpful to the student; low

morale and frustration may occur. The authors suggested using focus The

educational researchers. In order to improve teaching and learning, a good

theory of difficulty pinpoints the typical trouble spots that students have for a

certain subject and provides some causal insight of why those problems arise.

presents learning challenges due to its partially unconscious nature. A robust

idea of difficulty has benefited learning in several studies. Educators may not

always respond appropriately to ongoing challenges in the classroom.

Accusing students of their shortcomings and continuing to educate in the same

manner is a common response. An even better course of action would be to

"teach harder," devoting more time and energy to solving particular problems

without conducting a causal study of what causes them to be difficult. Refining

a causal analysis through experience is the most effective way to "teach

smarter." The creation of informal ideas of difficulty is a crucial component in

teaching craft.

Significance of the study

1. Students - It will help the students who's conducting their research

paper to gain more understanding about the difficulties of research

writing.

2. Teachers - By conducting this research, the teachers will have an idea

on how difficult writing research is. By knowing this struggle, the

teachers can use this knowledge to guide their learners.

3. Future researchers - The result of this study will help the future

researchers by knowing the difficulties of the students in writing

research so they can fill the gap.

Statement of the Problem

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The primary goal of this research is to identify the factors influencing

students' difficulties in writing research papers at Mary the Queen College of

Rizal Campus.

The researchers will recruit the assistance of 30 students from Mary the

Queen College of Rizal Campus, Brgy. Burgos, Montaña, Kanlaon Street,

Rodriguez, Rizal as their respondents during the school year 2023-2024.
