@o ° ° RELATION BETWEEN RADIOUS OF CURVATURE AND BENDING MOMENT Elastic Curve: The edge view of the neutral surface of a deflected beam is called the elastic curve of the beam. Consider a beam which was straight while it was unloaded. “AB" is a short part of the elastic curve of the beam which has been bent by loads. Planes through A and B which were originally parallel and vertical now meet at ‘O’. It can be assumed that bending moments at A and B are equal and radious of curvature OA and OB are equal if A and B are very close and ds being infinitesimal. Stresses caused by the bending are below proportional limit, so Hooke’s Law holds. 2. Plane section remain plane after the beam bent. 3. Length of the elastic curve is the same as the length of its horizontal projection. 4. Deflections due to shear are negligible. Consider two points A & B, the distance between them along the curve being as and the horizontal distance between then being ax. Let ~ be the angle between a verticle line and the normal to the curve at A and let dg be the angle subtended by the arc AB. @0o General Equation of the Elastic curve of a Deflected Beam 1 _ Hence: ss dg => Pp Pp ds At the point on the curve where the slope is small, the difference between ds and its horizontal projection dx is extremely small, dx may be substituted for ds.
