THE IMPLICATIONS OF BLENDED LEARNING MODEL


AND IMMERSION METHOD FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNERS
IN LITERACY ACQUISITION
(An Introduction to Research)

I. Introduction
Literacy in Latin is literatus, means learner and littera means letters or conventional
writing system. The word literatus in French means learning to acquire the ability to write and
read. Literacy aims to obtain new knowledge that is reasonable to disseminate (communicate)
to the public. Browsing electronic or printed literature is the process of searching for and
collecting facts to become data or information about an event, as well as selecting and sorting
them according to the needs or purpose of obtaining them, such as for the purposes of a
scientific or expert field. The more skilled a communicator was in communicating his
knowledge, the more skilled he would be in conveying the message to the communicant. In a
sense, the orderliness of a person's thoughts in communicating would be heard from the
orderliness of the language he spoke or the disorder of a speech showed the disorder of a
thought, so that is the purpose of language mastery for a person. Communicating in a literacy
context does not merely express ideas, but must touch on transactional statements between the
communicator and the communicant (refuse-accept, agree-disagree), thereby literacy leading
someone to think critically. Statements of rejection or acceptance of an idea must also be based
on arguments from literature searches.
Language is a symbolic system of human speech (voices), communicative, arbitrary and
abstract. According to Keraf (1978, 2001, 2010), arbitrary is a series (system) of certain
utterances that does not necessarily contain a certain meaning. The meaning of a word depends
on the convention or agreement of the native speaker community. The voices sequence in the
word "mountain" does not refer to the its material, but the native speakers agree on what it
means. Abstract in the meaning of language is the sensory immeasurability of a symbolic
meaning in a word. A word represents the speaker's idea through the speech system, is listened
to as an abstract symbol that is known, but does not represent what is said, such as listening to
the voices sequence in the word "impossible". In the literacy framework, language occurs in the
event of searching, collecting, processing (selecting and sorting), and communicating
information.
If a person expresses his thoughts or presents information about science, knowledge or
the profession that is being pursued, it is assumed that he has listened to, viewed, discussed,
read, and written it. Suriasumantri (2001) wrote about what science and knowledge are, and
language as a means of scientific thinking or rational thinking apart from mathematics, statistics
and logic. Science is a part of knowledge that has gone through a series of procedures and
observation criteria in order to generate new knowledge for the sake of life safety. Knowledge
is essentially everything that humans know about a particular object, including science.
Language is a means of expressing a reasoning framework (frame of reference) and empirical
thinking that refers to sensory experience (frame of experience).
Ratio (thinking) is the ability to understand and conclude logically and will always be
explored if one constantly, consistently and continuously gets used to listening, viewing,
discussing, reading and writing down social or or natural mechanisms phenomena, isues, or
events as facts. This method will lead someone to think critically, creatively, even innovatively
according to their own competence in a particular field optimally (Teale & Sulzby: 1989,
Ramanathan: 1996, Grabe: 2000, Behar-Horenstein LS: 2009). Both Rationalism and
Empiricism agreed that essentially the idea is obviously established in a person. Rationalists
believe that reason had been source of knowledge before it was investigated by fact. Empiricists
believe that the sensory experience of fact had been the source of knowledge before it was
investigated by reasoning.
A foreign language is not the mother tongue in an area (inside) which is studied to obtain
as much information as possible from outside. The era of Industry 4.0 allows someone to easily
obtain practical digital information technology as a communication tool to practice knowledge
in their profession. The more skilled a person is in a foreign language, it is assumed that he will
gain more and easier knowledge. Armed with digital technology and foreign language skills, it
is easier for him to access global literature. Literature study is a series of activities relating to
methods of obtaining information, reading, recording and processing some informations or data
and used as references.

II. Models, Methodes, and Techniques for Learning Foreign Languages


The Blended Learning is a learning model that not only blended synchronous and
asynchronous digitally electronics but also methods and techniques according to the character
of the subject. This model is very concerned in education system in the 21st century for the
educational needs of science , technology, entrepreneurship, social character and culture, all of
which are blended in learning methods and techniques on a digital electronic platform that takes
into account the safety of humanity. Blended Learning Model requires internet-based digital
technology as a platform for implementing learning method solutions, capable of being
implemented at any time, both at home, at school and at work. It even acts as a means of
mitigating critical conditions, such as endemic and pandemic diseases or other disasters that
impact the teaching-learning process, as well as the platform is useful for research needs.

Immersion Method is a method for learning foreign languages in the Industry 4.0 era
that deserves to be embedded in this platform. This method immerses students in a new
language and the lessons they are learning, so the platform contains techniques for immersing

students in a new language and immersing subjects in that new language. Embedding this
method in the Blended Learning Model has gone through a number of researches in several
countries. There is nothing wrong if this model is tried to be adopted, absorbed, adapted, or
borrowed and applied to foreign language learning in either the core curriculum or co-
curricular, but the method should be studied in accordance with research principles before being
applied. If an educational institution is willing to be the locus for exemplifying this learning
application, make sure it is immediately ready with the technological devices. Research
principles according to positivism need to involve a number of scientific disciplines which
related to foreign language learning models and methods.
A learning model must contain methods and techniques that are not just language
learning concept, but linguistic must also be integrated in the Blended Learning Model. This
blended must be concomitant, embedded, and complementary in a foreign language learning
platform. For example, researching English language learning models certainly involves
linguistic concepts that students must acquire. They must acquire skills in using tenses relating
to the gramatical categories of verbs to indicate 'time' and 'type of action' as well as aspectuality
which indicates events. A sentence is structured according to syntagmatic relations (derivation),
also structured according to paradigmatic realations (inflection) according to the principles of
langue, parole, and langage (Zainudin : 2013 dan Sausssure : 1916). Praktically, it can be seen
in English Pattern Practices: establishing the patterns as habits , which in Arabic is tried to be
approached using the Tasrifan (technique) (see Astuti : 2011).

III. Conclusion
As a result, a number of opinions regarding the Blended Learning Model and Immersion
Method in a foreign language learning platform are assumed to have implications for increasing
the ability of students to deepen and expand literacy activities, as well as expand access to
global literature. Because of the sophistication of the model and method, students should be
more accustomed to using foreign languages for literacy, obtaining more information without
the barriers of space and time. The role foreign languages play in the acquisition of broader
knowledge and more opportunities to communicate it.
The Industry 4.0 era presents a rapid shift-moving phenomenon in global economic and
political conditions. This immediately shifts and moves the education model as a circumstantial
part of economic and political development. Higher education institutions must be as smart as
possible in adopting ideas or tools from outside. In other terms, inserting an “outer element”
becomes an "inner element" for a system. Higher education institutions as centers of civilization
(center of excellence) should avoid delays in initial or basic conditions which could have an
impact on low results. It should be responsive to shifts and movements in global learning
models and methods so that its graduates avoid being left behind in the global job market. In
this way, a broad and complete (comprehensive) common interest between the economic and
political and global movements, educational interests, can be seen. The presence of digital
technology in the Industry 4.0 era in the realm of international relations, which culminates in
entrepreneurship, requires skilled foreign language learners, they will be fit and proper to
compete in the global job market and be able to promote local values (locality) to the global
arena (globality) or called glocality.
