1.0 Introduction

1.1 Execu琀椀ve Summary

The Na琀椀onal Associa琀椀on of Chain Drug Stores stated that nearly 9 out of 10 Americans live within 昀椀ve
miles of a pharmacy. That average distance shrinks to 1.83 miles for individuals who live in metropolitan
areas. However, this is not the reality for Boyd County. Residents of Boyd County have to drive 30 to 50
miles one way just to reach the nearest pharmacies. A昀琀er more than a decade without a local pharmacy,
Boyd County was in desperate need of a change.

281 Family Pharmacy is a pharmacy located in Spencer, Nebraska. 281 Family Pharmacy aims to provide
a personalized and compassionate experience for all customers. 281 Family Pharmacy plans to u琀椀lize
modern technology and priori琀椀ze customer service to create an experience that is convenient for
customers and superior to the service provided by compe琀椀tors. As the only pharmacy in the local area,
281 Family Pharmacy is commi琀琀ed to providing care that goes beyond prescrip琀椀ons by focusing on a
local, friendly atmosphere. With a close-knit sta昀昀 that cares about their pa琀椀ents, 281 Family Pharmacy is
established to serve.

281 Family Pharmacy operates as a Professional Limited Liability Company, allowing business owners
protec琀椀on for their personal assets, as well as protec琀椀on from malprac琀椀ce. The owners of 281 Family
Pharmacy believe that hard work and dedica琀椀on to the local community will allow for growth and
success of the company. As the business gains more clients, it is an琀椀cipated that customers will pass on
informa琀椀on about the excellent services that 281 Family Pharmacy provides. 281 Family Pharmacy has
the poten琀椀al to expand and provide services to areas beyond Boyd County. The pharmacy hopes to
combine personnel skills and innova琀椀ve technology to provide a unique experience that is superior to
compe琀椀琀椀on within the pharmaceu琀椀cal industry.

The en琀椀re workforce of 281 Family Pharmacy is dedicated to delivering quality service that provides care
beyond prescrip琀椀ons. As a customer-oriented business, 281 Family Pharmacy seeks employees that
share the same goals and values as the owners. The company believes that all of the hired employees
have unique skills and abili琀椀es that they can contribute to the successes of the business and help provide
care beyond prescrip琀椀ons.

The owners of 281 Family Pharmacy believe that by keeping costs minimal, the business will be able to
reach out to families and individuals in the community and put their health and wellness 昀椀rst. Within 10
years, 281 Family Pharmacy hopes to purchase the building they are currently based in, rather than
con琀椀nue to rent the loca琀椀on. Long term, owning the land and building will prove to be bene昀椀cial for the
昀椀nances of the business. A昀琀er paying for the building, only minimal costs for upkeep will remain. In
addi琀椀on, the business will increase in value due to owning an o昀케ce and real estate.

opera琀椀ons as well as coordinate human resources.

2.5 Company Loca琀椀on

281 Family Pharmacy will be along Highway 281 in the center of the business district in Spencer, Nebraska.
Spencer is a rural community with a popula琀椀on of 428 residents and is the central community of Boyd
County. This sec琀椀on of Highway 281 is heavily traveled because it intersects with Highway 12. 281 Family
Pharmacy will purchase a vacant building along the highway at 102 South Thayer Street, that was
previously the Spencer Pharmacy. It is located within walking distance from Boyd County Public Schools,
Niobrara Valley Clinic, William Kro琀琀er Co., Cahoy’s General Market, KC’s Roadrunner, Boyd County Sen-
ior Center, Country Cafe, NAPA Auto Parts, Spencer Community Hall, Spencer Township Library, 63 County

company’s start-up, both of the individual owners will invest $50,000 into the business. A business loan

expenses.

3.1 Size and Growth Rate of Industry

The pharmaceu琀椀cal industry can be traced back to apothecaries that moved into wholesale drug
produc琀椀on and dye and chemical companies that discovered medical applica琀椀ons for their products.
When these two branches merged, the pharmaceu琀椀cal industry emerged. Today, the United States
pharmaceu琀椀cal market holds over 45% of the global pharmaceu琀椀cal market, according to Coyne College.
In 2016, this was about 446 billion dollars. The pharmaceu琀椀cal industry is known to be an
“ever-changing” industry and will con琀椀nue to develop into the future.

3.2 Nature of Compe琀椀琀椀on

Pharmacies are vital businesses for all people. However, as consumers in a rural area adapta琀椀ons to
limited resources must be made. The other compe琀椀tors in this industry in the area are located thirty and
昀椀昀琀y miles away. O’Neill Family Pharmacy and West Holt Pharmacy are where Boyd County residents
currently 昀椀ll their prescrip琀椀ons. As this current system is inconvenient and 昀氀awed by requiring travel, a
local pharmacy can provide ful昀椀llment of pharmaceu琀椀cal needs while bringing a unique form of
customer service and care. The pharmaceu琀椀cal industry is clearly important, and for the elderly
community, crea琀椀ng a local pharmacy would sa琀椀sfy many needs. There is a limited amount of
compe琀椀琀椀on and that compe琀椀琀椀on cannot compete with the convenience and loca琀椀on that 281 Family
Pharmacy would o昀昀er.

3.3 History of Industry

As technology develops, so does the pharmaceu琀椀cal industry. At the very beginning, people used
rudimentary methods to turn plants, minerals, and tar into “medica琀椀ons”. The 昀椀rst retail pharmacy in
the United States opened in 1729 in Philadelphia, according to Coyne College. Star琀椀ng in 1852,
pharmaceu琀椀cal medica琀椀ons began to be standardized. A昀琀er World War II, pharmaceu琀椀cal
manufacturing took on a more modernized and industrial form. Now, a昀琀er centuries of work and
research, advancements con琀椀nue to be made every day that provide answers, op琀椀ons, and
opportuni琀椀es for individuals all over the world.

3.4 Trends and Strategic Opportuni琀椀es

Since the closest pharmacy is thirty miles away, the loca琀椀on for 281 Family Pharmacy presents a great
opportunity. It will be easy to a琀琀ract customers and establish posi琀椀ve rela琀椀onships with the various
medical clinics and hospitals in the area as seen in sec琀椀on 6.3 of this business plan. The residents of Boyd
County will not have to drive as far to meet their needs. 281 Family Pharmacy will supply the
surrounding areas with a convenient loca琀椀on, providing a local feel to the business that will keep
customers coming back. 281 Family Pharmacy plans to emphasize its role in the lives of the elderly, as
well as make connec琀椀ons with the next genera琀椀on. Since a large number of poten琀椀al customers are
elderly, 281 Family Pharmacy will expand distribu琀椀on op琀椀ons to make it more convenient and provide
care beyond prescrip琀椀ons.

281 Family Pharmacy conducted a survey of Boyd County residents regarding the need for a pharmacy in
the county. The survey was sent to every adult resident in Boyd County. 281 Family Pharmacy received
422 completed surveys. The results of the survey are below:

4.0 Target Market

8
4.1 De昀椀ned Target Market
281 Family Pharmacy focuses on providing prescrip琀椀on medica琀椀on to residents of Boyd County. With
four healthcare providers within a thirteen mile radius of 281 Family Pharmacy, and the next nearest
pharmacy being thirty miles away in the neighboring county, the target market can be easily a琀琀racted.
Thus, the target market is the popula琀椀on of people in Boyd County that require medica琀椀ons to improve
their health and wellness and to maintain a high quality of life. 281 Family Pharmacy will be able to
provide local residents with convenient and easily accessible prescrip琀椀ons every day.

The graphic to the le昀琀 was created

by the owners of 281 Family
Pharmacy. This graphic was created
to map out their ideas for targe琀椀ng
the areas of whom they will market
their business. The chart is divided
into six areas that will make it easier
to e昀昀ec琀椀vely target speci昀椀c areas of
the market.

4.2 Target Market Size and Growth Poten琀椀al

281 Family Pharmacy has a broad target market of all residents of Boyd County who take a prescrip琀椀on
medica琀椀on. Mayo Clinic states that 70% of Americans take at least one prescrip琀椀on drug each day.
This means that approximately 1,384 residents of Boyd County have at least one prescrip琀椀on
medica琀椀on. Dr. Stephen Sauver from Mayo Clinic states that, “As you get older, you tend to get more
prescrip琀椀ons,” which suggests that our target market will con琀椀nue to grow as the popula琀椀on of Boyd
County con琀椀nues to age.

4.0 Target Market

5.0 Competitive Analysis 9

4.3 Current Pa琀琀erns and Poten琀椀al Market

According to the US Census Bureau, 18.2% of United States ci琀椀zens are above the age of 62, and in Boyd
County, Nebraska, 35.7% of ci琀椀zens are above the age of 62. Seniors in the United States 昀椀lled an
average of 27.6 prescrip琀椀ons per person in 2016, according to the Iqvia Ins琀椀tute for Human Data
Science. As our popula琀椀on con琀椀nues to age, the need for prescrip琀椀ons is bound to increase.

The current pa琀琀ern of the aging popula琀椀on will contribute to 281 Family Pharmacy’s success. Although
unfortunate, many people take prescrip琀椀on medica琀椀ons every day. As previously stated, Mayo Clinic
claims that nearly 70% of Americans take at least one prescrip琀椀on drug each day and more than half of
Americans take two. More than 20% take 昀椀ve or more medica琀椀ons daily. This being the case, 281 Family
Pharmacy has a large target market that will be de昀椀ned as all residents of Boyd County and the sur-
rounding areas.

4.4 Needs and Sensi琀椀vi琀椀es

Although the target market seems successful and 281 Family Pharmacy plans to achieve a large market
share, there are a number of sensi琀椀vi琀椀es that 281 Family Pharmacy needs to take into account in order
to ensure that the company con琀椀nues to be successful. Boyd County is in desperate need for a pharmacy
due to the aging popula琀椀on and increased rates of prescrip琀椀on medica琀椀ons needed. However, despite
current acquisi琀椀on of medica琀椀on being di昀케cult for the residents of Boyd County, these individuals likely
have a pharmacy that they currently use. It can be di昀케cult for them to switch from they are used to,
even if it will eventually be worth the e昀昀ort to make the change. This is why 281 Family Pharmacy must
concern itself with customer comfort, customer safety, and reliability. The business strives to ensure that
every customer will receive sa琀椀sfac琀椀on with a smile.

5.1 Key Compe琀椀tors

West Holt Pharmacy
West Holt Pharmacy is by far the largest compe琀椀tor to 281 Family Pharmacy. This company dominates a
majority of the market share in rural northeast Nebraska because of their transporta琀椀on and distribu琀椀on
services. West Holt Pharmacy transports prescrip琀椀ons to over 20 other communi琀椀es outside of Atkinson,
Nebraska. A weakness of West Holt Pharmacy is that their distribu琀椀on services require technology skills
that many elderly ci琀椀zens do not have to order prescrip琀椀ons. In addi琀椀on, all payment plans and billing
are done through technology and weather regularly interferes with delivery to Boyd County residents
that are 50 miles away.

O’Neill Family Pharmacy

Located in the heart of O’Neill, Nebraska, O’Neill Family Pharmacy serves the majority of the city of
O’Neill. Prescrip琀椀ons can be ordered online or over the phone from this pharmacy. O’Neill Family
Pharmacy is located close to the major hospital of the area that has satellite clinics in many communi琀椀es.
Although O’Neill Family Pharmacy serves many people, they are understa昀昀ed and need at least 72 hours
to process prescrip琀椀ons. They also do not deliver, so customers from Boyd County must drive at least 30
miles one way to pick up their prescrip琀椀ons.

The compe琀椀琀椀ve analysis below compares 281 Family Pharmacy, West Holt Pharmacy, and O’Neill Family
Pharmacy. This graphic is useful to the owners of 281 Family Pharmacy because it allows them to see
how they compare to the other pharmacies. The sec琀椀ons of this analysis are pricing, community
environment, facili琀椀es, public rela琀椀ons, and special services. Pricing is included because customers o昀琀en
u琀椀lize businesses with the most reasonable prices. Community environment is included because
welcoming customers and providing care beyond prescrip琀椀ons should be a priority for any pharmacy.
Facili琀椀es are present in the analysis because making good impressions and simplifying the produc琀椀on
plan is ideal. Public rela琀椀ons is analyzed because developing rela琀椀onships within the communi琀椀es is
important. Special services are included because the target market is focused around the elderly and
mee琀椀ng their needs, which is essen琀椀al in order to prosper as a local pharmacy in a rural community.

5.2 Poten琀椀al Future Compe琀椀tors

Gregory Drug
Gregory Drug is a 昀氀ourishing pharmacy about 60 miles away but is beginning delivery
service to surrounding areas. This pharmacy does have good rapport but the delivery will be far from
most of the market of 281 Family Pharmacy. Gregory Drug is also considering adding mail-order services,
which would be more e昀케cient for Gregory Drug, compared to delivering prescrip琀椀ons 60 miles.

5.3 Entry Barriers for Future Compe琀椀tors

In Boyd County, poten琀椀al new compe琀椀tors will face entry barriers. The target market is fully absorbed by
281 Family Pharmacy, as well as the other pharmacies in the area. With the popula琀椀on of the county
being only 1,977, there is only a need for one pharmacy. Loca琀椀on is an addi琀椀onal barrier because there
is limited property available for purchase. With 281 Family Pharmacy present in Spencer, it would be an
ideal loca琀椀on for everyone in the surrounding communi琀椀es. Finding employees will be di昀케cult for future
pharmacies because all individuals with the proper cer琀椀昀椀ca琀椀on in the area are currently employed by
281 Family Pharmacy.

6.1 Key Message

As chain pharmacies con琀椀nue expanding, independent pharmacies are leaning into what they do best—
providing high-quality, personalized service. Independent pharmacies, such as 281 Family Pharmacy,
have the opportunity to build personal rela琀椀onships with their customer base. The small town 昀氀avor
allows 281 Family Pharmacy employees to know more about their customers on a personal level and
provide service to them that 昀椀ts their personal needs. Considering the high age of the target market 281
Family Pharmacy has, providing necessary prescrip琀椀ons and over-the-counter medica琀椀ons is a priority.
281 Family Pharmacy ac琀椀vely works toward providing care beyond prescrip琀椀ons.

6.2 Message Delivery

Message delivery will take place in a variety of forms, such as internet, print, social media, radio, local
partnerships, and a custom mobile applica琀椀on. Delivering 281 Family Pharmacy’s key message through a
variety of channels is quite important to reach a wide range of ages.

Internet - Many businesses use the internet as a way to a琀琀ract customers. The 281 Family Pharmacy
website will be an avenue for curious customers to 昀椀nd out more informa琀椀on about the pharmacy and
its services. 281 Family Pharmacy will secure the website domain
www.281familypharmacy.com. The website will be u琀椀lized in order to
keep viewers up to date with informa琀椀on, as well as provide
informa琀椀on to poten琀椀al customers. 281 Family Pharmacy’s
individualized approach, mission statement, history, services, sta昀昀,
resources, and contact informa琀椀on will all be easily accessible on the
company website. On the website, there will also be op琀椀ons to order
prescrip琀椀ons, pay bills, and view records.

Print - 281 Family Pharmacy will place an adver琀椀sement in the local

newspapers, The Spencer Advocate and The Bu琀琀e Gaze琀琀e, each week.
The adver琀椀sements provide company informa琀椀on and resources to readers. Nearly 1,000 residents of
Boyd County receive the local newspapers. Using print adver琀椀sements is a great way to make the public
aware of the new business, especially since the target market is comprised of elderly ci琀椀zens that do not
all have social media or internet.

6.0 Marketing Plan and Sales Strategy

12

Social Media - In the upcoming age of technology, businesses can immensely bene昀椀t from taking
advantage of social media as a way of connec琀椀ng with poten琀椀al customers. 281 Family Pharmacy will be
using the most popular social media site to increase the customer base. The owners chose to use
Facebook because it is very common, and a昀琀er surveying the target market, it as found that Facebook is
the most used social media pla琀昀orm in the community. The company’s Facebook Page, 281 Family
Pharmacy - Spencer, NE, will allow the public to “like” the page to receive status updates. The great
bene昀椀t of Facebook is that when a user “likes” the 281 Family
Pharmacy page, all of their Facebook friends will see this
ac琀椀vity on their news feed, which will expand 281 Family
Pharmacy’s social media reach.

Radio - 281 Family Pharmacy will u琀椀lize the local radio sta琀椀ons, KBRX out of O’Neill, NE, KGRD in
Orchard, NE, and KBRB out of Ainsworth, NE to share daily adver琀椀sements for 281 Family Pharmacy,
contact informa琀椀on, and the services o昀昀ered. By adver琀椀sing on the radio, reaches residents of Boyd
County as well as individuals who live in surrounding coun琀椀es that may want to u琀椀lize our services.

Mobile Applica琀椀on - 281 Family Pharmacy’s mobile applica琀椀on, 281RX2GO, allows interested or
current customers to view informa琀椀on. Users may also set to receive no琀椀昀椀ca琀椀ons for prescrip琀椀on
renewals. Customers will have opportunity to renew prescrip琀椀ons by scanning the
QR Code on the medica琀椀on label. In addi琀椀on, it will include contact informa琀椀on and
a list of employees, as well as delivery op琀椀ons. Customers will also be able to create a
personalized pro昀椀le on the mobile applica琀椀on that will safely manage their list of
prescrip琀椀ons. 281RX2GO is available on iTunes and Google Play.

6.3 Sales Procedures and Methods

281 Family Pharmacy will rely heavily on referrals from local hospitals, clinics, and physicians. The
owners, Joseph Hia琀琀 and Elsie Magwire, intend to visit local hospitals and clinics and meet with o昀케ce
managers and prac琀椀琀椀oners to discuss services and products o昀昀ered by 281 Family Pharmacy. Sit down
mee琀椀ngs would occur in order to establish an understanding of the services 281 Family Pharmacy o昀昀ers
and how they employees to provide care beyond prescrip琀椀ons.

Communica琀椀on between local hospitals and clinics would

con琀椀nue in order to maintain business rela琀椀onships. As the
business grows, these rela琀椀onships will con琀椀nue to expand.
To appeal to the local popula琀椀on, it will be important for 281
Family Pharmacy to develop a strong rela琀椀onship with local
organiza琀椀ons in the community. Traveling to surrounding
centers of interest will give the owners advantages over the
compe琀椀tors. To the right are local healthcare providers that

7.1 Business Facili琀椀es

281 Family Pharmacy’s facility will be in Spencer, Nebraska. In the heart of Boyd County, customers enter
281 Family Pharmacy through the front doors. They will be met by a pharmacy clerk at the service

7.4 Impact of Technology

By implemen琀椀ng innova琀椀ve technology into the business, the employees will be able to create an
e昀케cient work environment. The 281 Family Pharmacy sta昀昀 will strive to make day to day opera琀椀ons
e昀케cient. The pharmacists, clerks, and 昀椀nancial manager will each have a 2018 iMacPro 27-inch Re琀椀na 5K
5120-by-2880 P3 Display desktop computer equipped with so昀琀ware for the company. The pharmacy will
purchase a robo琀椀c autoclave for compounding medica琀椀on, as well as other new pharmacy technologies.
The technology that the pharmacy will own will allow sta昀昀 to implement new technology in the following
ways:

Accoun琀椀ng
The 昀椀nancial manager of 281 Family Pharmacy will use QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2019 to properly
organize the company’s 昀椀nancial informa琀椀on. This computer program gives 281 Family Pharmacy more
昀氀exibility and helps the business save valuable 琀椀me and money.

Communica琀椀ons
Through the company website and email server, employees can email one another, host mee琀椀ngs, and
email customers. This allows employees to communicate even when not in the o昀케ce, and keep
customers informed. The mobile applica琀椀on, 281RX2GO, has an employee portal that will allow the
employees to view informa琀椀on from mobile devices. The Panasonic telephone system allows the o昀케ce
manager to transfer calls to speci昀椀c employees and each employee will have their own voicemail
account and extension number. A list of employee extension numbers can be found in sec琀椀on 11.2 of
this business plan.

Digital Adver琀椀sing
281 Family Pharmacy’s website, mobile applica琀椀on, and social media accounts will provide the public
with important informa琀椀on about the pharmacy and the services provided. The desktop computers will
provide the marke琀椀ng specialist with the opportunity to create intriguing and a琀琀rac琀椀ve adver琀椀sements.

Pharmaceu琀椀cal Equipment
To operate a compe琀椀琀椀ve pharmacy that meets the needs of the customers and provides care beyond
prescrip琀椀ons, a compounding hood, a large piece of computer-based equipment that prevents par琀椀cles
from entering and leaving a work area, will be purchased. A robo琀椀c autoclave will also be placed in the
laboratory, which is a piece of equipment used to sterilize various medical tools and objects such as
昀氀asks, funnels, spatulas, and reusable syringes. A pharmaceu琀椀cal compounder will be necessary in order
to have compounding services.

So昀琀ware
The so昀琀ware that 281 Family Pharmacy will use is Computer Rx. This so昀琀ware also serves as a point-of-
sale system that integrates a wide array of services to customers. Using this central management
so昀琀ware will allow 281 Family Pharmacy to have an e昀케cient work昀氀ow setup, customizable repor琀椀ng, a
medica琀椀on synchroniza琀椀on program, an easy-to-use interface, an employee management portal, and
琀椀me clock availabili琀椀es.

8.1 Key Employees, Board of Directors, and Human Resources

281 Family Pharmacy will structure its business opera琀椀ons by the business hierarchy which can be viewed
in sec琀椀on 7.3 of this business plan. The pharmacists will oversee the performances of other employees.
Each employee will sign a contract, agreeing to their stated du琀椀es and responsibili琀椀es, as well as their
payroll and bene昀椀ts informa琀椀on. As Chief Execu琀椀ve O昀케cer of 281 Family Pharmacy, Joseph Hia琀琀 will
supervise the management structure of the company and work closely with the opera琀椀ons manager. As
Opera琀椀ons Manager, Elsie Magwire will ensure that appropriate candidates are selected for the various
other posi琀椀ons. Financial Manager, Kari Carlson, will make 昀椀nancial decisions and will be expected to
create quarterly reports on the 昀椀nancial stability of the pharmacy. Technology coordinator, Robert
Vesely, will ensure that all so昀琀ware as well as the website, mobile applica琀椀on, and internet servers are
properly working. 281 Family Pharmacy, as a PLLC, will not acquire a board of directors, but will obtain
an advisory commi琀琀ee. The advisory commi琀琀ee will consist of the owners, their bank representa琀椀ve,
two local medical professionals, and a member of the Boyd County Economic Development Center. This
commi琀琀ee will meet bi-monthly to review 昀椀nancials, evaluate the status of the business, and plan for
the future. These mee琀椀ngs will allow all par琀椀es to voice their opinions about the business and give the
owners input.

8.2 Iden琀椀fying, Recrui琀椀ng, and Securing Key Par琀椀cipants

The opera琀椀ons manager will target the known individuals that live in the area with the proper educa琀椀on
and licensing. The owners will adver琀椀se for employees through social media and local newspapers.
281 Family Pharmacy will also seek employees through Indeed, Monster Recruiter, and Zip Recruiter.
Websites like these are employment-related search engines for job lis琀椀ngs. 281 Family Pharmacy can
view applicant’s cover le琀琀ers and work experience résumés on these pla琀昀orms.

There will be a three-step hiring process for new employees at 281 Family Pharmacy. First, applica琀椀ons
will be reviewed and the most quali昀椀ed of the applicants will be o昀昀ered an interview at 281 Family
Pharmacy. Second, references will be contacted and background checks will be completed. The
pharmacists will then select the applicant that is the most quali昀椀ed for the posi琀椀on and would be the
best 昀椀t for 281 Family Pharmacy. Once these employees are secured at 281 Family Pharmacy, the next
goal is to retain the employee. To retain the employee we will provide the employees with compe琀椀琀椀ve
pay. Finally, we desire to recognize the employees for their extensive e昀昀orts by providing them with
incen琀椀ve plans and rewards.

8.3 Compensa琀椀on and Incen琀椀ve Plans

To secure valuable employees, 281 Family Pharmacy will o昀昀er
compe琀椀琀椀ve compensa琀椀on plans and incen琀椀ves. 281 Family
Pharmacy strives to keep its employees happy and engaged in their
work. 281 Family Pharmacy will o昀昀er a bene昀椀ts package for all
employees. The bene昀椀ts package will include 80 hours of sick pay,
80 hours of vaca琀椀on pay, 10 hours of paid bereavement, plus
health insurance. To incen琀椀vize employees to work at 281 Family
Pharmacy on a long-term basis, employees will be rewarded with
bonuses and gradual salary increases the longer they have been
working for the pharmacy.

281 Family Pharmacy will employ an hourly pay scale for the cer琀椀昀椀ed pharmacy technicians and the
pharmacy clerks. The 昀椀nancial manager will be a salary-based employee. The pharmacists will receive
their compensa琀椀on following the payout of wages and bills. The remainder will be invested into the
company or saved for future expansion of the pharmacy. Any employee who is injured while working will
receive worker’s compensa琀椀on. These bene昀椀ts will enable the employee to have an income while they
recover from their injury. Pharmacies rarely encounter injuries, so worker’s compensa琀椀on is not
expected to be frequently u琀椀lized.

9.0 Long Term Development 20

An addi琀椀onal bene昀椀t for the employees of 281 Family Pharmacy is that employees will receive eight
hours of pay on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and
Christmas Day. Before the winter holidays, 281 Family Pharmacy gives an annual bonus of $100. The
pharmacy also holds a Christmas celebra琀椀on for business employees and their families. All expenses for
this celebra琀椀on are paid for by 281 Family Pharmacy.

9.1 Future Goals

3 Year Goals
The 昀椀rst three years of 281 Family Pharmacy’s development are when the company is most vulnerable.
To achieve a customer base that will last well into the long term, 281 Family Pharmacy plans to:
 281 Family Pharmacy should look to break even by the second year of opera琀椀on, as outlined in the
昀椀nancial analysis in sec琀椀on 10.2
The company should con琀椀nually provide excellent customer service to all customers.
 281 Family Pharmacy should con琀椀nue to establish rela琀椀onships with local clinics and physicians.
 The owners should seek to make all payments due on the ini琀椀al loan for $151,000.
5+ Year Goals
Once 281 Family Pharmacy is established in its 昀椀rst 昀椀ve years, the focus of the company is not only on
remaining a pharmacy that provides care beyond prescrip琀椀ons, but also to expand and become a leader
in the communi琀椀es outside of Boyd County. Thus, 281 Family Pharmacy plans to do the following a昀琀er
昀椀ve years of opera琀椀on:
 Increase the ini琀椀al customer base of 300 customers to 1,000 customers.
 With the increase from the ini琀椀al customer base of 300 to 1,000 customers, 281 Family Pharmacy
will seek to hire an addi琀椀onal cer琀椀昀椀ed pharmacy technician to meet current demands.
 Become a leader in the semi-local pharmaceu琀椀cal industry by reassessing the target market
analysis and iden琀椀fying poten琀椀al expansion loca琀椀ons.
 It is necessary to ensure that the current customer base is maintained, as the ini琀椀al Boyd County
community comes 昀椀rst and foremost in the priori琀椀es of the business.
 A昀琀er repaying the ini琀椀al loan from Bu琀琀e State Bank a昀琀er ten years of opera琀椀on, 281 Family
Pharmacy hopes to purchase the building that they currently rent.

9.2 Risks and Poten琀椀al Adverse Results

Business Risks
Understanding the risks present in the business industry is essen琀椀al for 281 Family Pharmacy to
overcome any obstacles and changing the company’s reputa琀椀onal, 昀椀nancial, and marke琀椀ng success. 281
Family Pharmacy must ensure that they stay up-to-date with technology. Remaining modernized while
also remaining simple and accessible for the elderly market is a balance 281 Family Pharmacy will have
to 昀椀nd and maintain. Addi琀椀onally, as a business, the risk of employee misconduct is present. 281 Family
Pharmacy will face the risk of employees stealing or abusing medica琀椀on. Employees could also make
errors such as 昀椀lling prescrip琀椀ons incorrectly or misconstruing instruc琀椀ons on orders.

Product Risks
Another risk associated with opera琀椀ng a pharmacy is the risk of faulty products. Because 281 Family
Pharmacy will receive medica琀椀ons from third-party manufacturers and suppliers, all aspects of the
crea琀椀on process will not be monitored directly by the owners. Therefore, there must be a strong channel
of trust between 281 Family Pharmacy and all suppliers.

Financial Risks
Maintaining customers and revenue is essen琀椀al to avoid all 昀椀nancial risk. 281 Family Pharmacy must also
con琀椀nue to make payments on their business loan before planning to purchase the building. The plan for
purchasing and remodeling the building relies on the ability to pay o昀昀 the business loan quickly. If it
takes longer than expected, the pro昀椀t margin will not increase un琀椀l later in the company’s life cycle.

9.3 SWOT Analysis

The SWOT analysis is a study undertaken by the owners of 281 Family Pharmacy to iden琀椀fy internal
strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportuni琀椀es and threats. The SWOT analysis has been
placed into sec琀椀ons, as requested by Bu琀琀e State Bank and the advisory commi琀琀ee, to be viewed and
evaluated easily.

10.1 Accoun琀椀ng System

281 Family Pharmacy will use the QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2019 computer
applica琀椀on to keep accurate records of the business’ transac琀椀ons. This so昀琀ware is
very popular with both small businesses and large corpora琀椀ons. The so昀琀ware is
very versa琀椀le in its capabili琀椀es and will allow 281 Family Pharmacy to track
pro昀椀tability, priori琀椀ze orders, manage inventory, keep track of the balance,
customize di昀昀erent billing rates, compute pro昀椀t and loss reports, establish sales
results, and organize inventory costs. A detailed descrip琀椀on of the so昀琀ware
competencies is below:

10.2 Financial Projec琀椀ons

The 昀椀nancial projec琀椀ons to follow are based on the current inventory costs and revenue projec琀椀ons. It
also assumes that taxes, insurance, and the loan rates will remain consistent. If any changes are made,
the 昀椀nancial projec琀椀ons will be changed accordingly and the company’s 昀椀nancial standings will be
re-evaluated. In this business plan, the loan amor琀椀za琀椀on, monthly income statements, and annual
income statements, as well as cash 昀氀ow statements can be found in sec琀椀ons 10.3 through 10.6.

losses over a period of 琀椀me. The pro昀椀ts or losses is determined by taking all revenues and
subtrac琀椀ng all expenses from both opera琀椀ng and non-opera琀椀ng ac琀椀vi琀椀es. The income statement is one

The purpose of the cash 昀氀ow statement or statement of cash 昀氀ows is to iden琀椀fy the major cash 昀氀ows
