Q1 (20 Marks):
A shunt generator has a Full-Load (F.L.) current of 196A at 220V. The stray losses are 720W and
the shunt coil resistance is 55. If it has F.L. efficiency of 88%, find the armature resistance. Also,
find the load current corresponding to maximum efficiency.

Q2 (20 Marks):
A 4-pole, 240V wave connected shunt motor gives 11190W when running at 1000 r.p.m. and
drawing armature and field currents of 50A and 1A respectively. It has 540 conductors. Armature
resistance is 0.1. Assuming a drop of 1V per brush. Find:
(a) Total torque,
(b) Useful torque,
(c) Useful flux/pole,
(d) Rotational loses,
(e) Efficiency.

Q3 (20 Marks):
A 25kVA, single-phase transformer has 250 turns on the primary and 40 turns on the secondary
winding. The primary is connected to 1500V, 50Hz supply. Calculate:
(i) The primary and secondary currents on full-load
(ii) The secondary e.m.f.
(iii) The maximum flux in the core.

Q4 (20 Marks):
An 8 pole, 3 phase, 50 Hz induction motor is running at a speed of 710 rpm with an input of 35 kW.
The stator losses at this operating condition are known to be 1200 W while the rotational losses are
600 W. Find:
1. The rotor copper loss.
2. The gross torque developed.
3. The gross mechanical power developed.
4. The net torque and,
5. The mechanical power output.

Q5 (20 Marks):

A. Explain the principle of operation for the transformer? (10 Marks)

B. Explain at what speed will the Induction Machine run? (10 Marks)
