Note: Final Exam 1st Attempt

Q1 (20 Marks):
A long-shunt generator running at 1000rpm supplies 22kW at a terminal voltage of 220V. The
resistance of armature, shunt field and series field are 0.05, 110 and 0.06 respectively. The
overall efficiency at the above load is 88%. Find:
1. Total copper losses.
2. Iron and friction losses.
3. The torque exerted by the prime mover (Motor).

Q2 (20 Marks):
Determine developed torque and shaft torque of 220V, 4 pole series motor with 800 conductors
wave-connected supplying a load of 8.2kW by taking 45A from the main. The flux per pole is 25mWb
and its armature circuit resistance is 0.6.

Q3 (20 Marks):
A 25kVA transformer has 500 turns on the primary and 50 turns on the secondary winding. The
primary is connected to 3000V, 50Hz supply. Find the full-load primary and secondary currents, the
secondary e.m.f. and the maximum flux in the core. Neglect leakage drops and no-load primary
current.

Q4 (20 Marks):
The power input to a 500V, 50Hz, 6 pole, 3 phase induction motor running at 975 rpm is 40kW. The
stator losses are 1kW and the friction and windage losses total 2kW. Calculate:
1. Slip.
2. The rotor copper loss.
3. Shaft power.
4. The efficiency.

Q5 (20 Marks):

A. Why the iron is a better conductor of flux than air? (5 Marks)

B. What is a transformer? And why do we need transformers? (5 Marks)
C. Explain why the three-phase induction motors are the most common and frequently
encountered machines in industry? (10 Marks)

GOOD LUCK!
