ABOUT US
The journey of Marine Engineering education in India began in 1927 on board the Training Ship “T.S.
Dufferin.” This vessel was a hub for teaching both nautical and engineering skills to aspiring
merchant navy officers. Following India’s independence in 1947, the nation recognized the need for a
robust Merchant Navy. As a result, pre-sea training for Marine Engineers shifted to the ‘Directorate
of Marine Engineering Training’ in 1949. With its primary office in Kolkata and a branch in Mumbai,
this change took place as per the Merchant Navy Officers Training Committee’s suggestions.

During its 75-year history, this institution has experienced significant metamorphoses. Seeking to
revitalize marine engineering education throughout the country, the Indian government established
the Committee on Maritime Education and Training (COMET) in October 1991. Dr. Chandrika Prasad
Srivastava, former Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, chaired this
committee. Based on COMET’s findings, the Merchant Marine Education and Research Trust
(M.M.E.R.T.) came into existence as a precursor to the formation of an Indian Maritime University.

Years later, on November 14, 2008, the Indian Maritime University (IMU) was officially inaugurated as
a teaching and affiliating university under India’s Ministry of Shipping. Situated in Chennai, this new
institution merged seven notable legacy teaching and research institutes from within the same
ministry. Consequently, it adopted a new identity – the Indian Maritime University, Kolkata – marking
a significant milestone in marine engineering education within India.

It is a quote often used to motivate our cadets to encourage hard work and embrace hardships, for
which they are not only trained for life on board ship, but also for life. Our diverse Alumni network,
spanning across the globe is a testament to the fact that the bonds forged by the institute, remain
intact even after years.

We are not just another college, but a fraternity of cadets who have worn the same white uniform
and take pride in each thread that binds everyone together. Although, making marine engineers out
of cadets is a matter of degree, making an officer out of a cadet is rather a work of grit and
determination. With almost 300 cadets training each year, our institute stands as an epicentre for
applying skilled marine engineers to the industry.

"Cacophony" to the tech-savvy wonderland of "Propulsion," and the exhilarating
adventure of "Chakravyuh," Tempest is a world of endless possibilities.

In the wake of the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, Tempest 2023 made a triumphant
return, marking a glorious resurgence. Over five extraordinary days, this festival
showcased a vibrant spectrum of events, promising a burst of colour and entertainment for
both participants and the captivated audience. Our unwavering commitment to uniting
people through their shared love for the sea shines through every facet of this
magnificent celebration.

A remarkable highlight of Tempest 2023 was the enchanting Alumni Night, graced by
distinguished alumni such as Dr. Ravi Kumar Mehrotra (CBE). Their presence added a touch
of prestige and legacy to the festivities, making it an evening to remember.

From DJ nights that set the floor ablaze to a dazzling array of technical and cultural events,
Tempest 2023 offered an electrifying fusion of entertainment. With more than 10 thrilling
sports events, participants pushed their limits, aiming for glory. The stand-up act by Mr.
Rajat Chauhan left the audience in splits, adding a dash of humour to the festivities.

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES
The DMET MERI Alumni Association Singapore hosted a Reunion
2023 at One Farer hotel, Singapore, on 29th April 2023. Alumni
associations around the globe regularly hold such reunions
enriching and carrying forward the DMET Bond and Brand.

AECDMET, has been organising, Paper presentation, model

making and other technical events in the campus for the cadets,
enriching their technical mindset and ideas.

The Hong Kong alumni association, publishes the yearly magazine

Gauge Glass, which is enriched with stories of DMET, and also
mentions the achievements of the institution.

DMET Samvaad, has organized several sessions with industry

leaders, to improve the training imparted to the cadets of the
institution.
