EXPANDED LITERACY

REFER TO A SPECIFIC, UNIVERSALLY AGREED-UPON CONCEPT.


HOWEVER, IN THE REALM OF EDUCATION AND INFORMATION, THERE
ARE SEVERAL LITERACIES THAT HAVE GAINED IMPORTANCE DUE TO
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS AND EVOLVING COMMUNICATION
LANDSCAPES.

1. DIGITAL LITERACY
The ability to use digital technologies,
including computers, smartphones, and
the internet. Understanding using
technology for communication and
productivity.

2. MEDIA LITERACY
The ability to analyze, evaluate, and create
media messages in various forms, such as
text, images, and videos. Media literacy
involves understanding how media shapes
perceptions and influences society.

3. INFORMATION LITERACY
The capacity to locate, evaluate, and use
information effectively it includes skills
related to finding and assessing
information from various sources,
including online databases and libraries.

4. VISUAL LITERACY
The ability to interpret and create visual
messages. This involves understanding
visual elements such as images, charts, and
graphs, and their role in communication.

5. CULTURAL LITERACY
Familiarity with the cultural references, symbols,
and norms that shape communication within a
particular community or society. Cultural literacy
is essential for effective communication in diverse
environments.

6. HEALTH LITERACY
The ability to access, understand, and apply
health information in order to make informed
decisions about one's health. Health literacy is
crucial for navigating healthcare systems and
understanding medical information.

7. FINANCIAL LITERACY
The understanding of financial concepts
and the ability to manage personal finances
effectively. This includes knowledge of
budgeting, saving, investing, and
understanding financial systems.

8. GLOBAL LITERACY
The ability to understand and engage with global
issues, perspectives, and cultures. Global literacy is
important in an interconnected world where
individuals and societies are influenced by events
and developments beyond their immediate
surroundings.

THESE EXPANDED LITERACIES RECOGNIZE THE CHANGING NATURE OF COMMUNICATION


AND THE SKILLS NEEDED TO THRIVE IN A RAPIDLY EVOLVING, TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN
SOCIETY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE DEFINITIONS AND IMPORTANCE OF THESE LITERACIES
MAY CONTINUE TO EVOLVE, AND IT'S ADVISABLE TO CONSULT THE LATEST
EDUCATIONAL LITERATURE AND RESOURCES FOR THE MOST CURRENT PERSPECTIVES.
