Report on Orientation Program of Elderly SHGs

A four days State level orientation program on elderly Self Help Group was organized at
SIPARD, Tripura from 21st June to 24th June 2023.

The program was conducted by Shri Rajeshwar Devarakonda, Head of Mission - Livelihoods
& Emergencies, Help Age India, and Shri Nilendu Mukherjee, National Resource Person,
NRLM. The number of participants which includes the District Coordinator (Social Inclusion
and Social Development) from North Tripura, South Tripura, Dhalai, Sepahijala, and Gomati
along with Block staff from those districts attended this workshop. The program was
inaugurated by Addl. Chief Executive Officer of TRLM, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of
TRLM, and Shri Nilendu Mukherjee by watering a plant in the presence of the Chief
Operating Officer of TRLM.
Day and Date Activities Conducted
21st June 2023  The day started with a brief introduction of the participants
(Day 1) as well as of Nilendu Sir. He then briefly discussed the
various objectives of this 4 days long orientation program.
 On the first day of the session, Nilendu Sir explained the
concept of the Elderly Self Help Group and how they are
different from Women SHGs. He stated that various
statistical data regarding the elderly population in India and
their status of living.
 After that, all the participants were divided into two groups
based on their experience with Elderly SHGs and asked to
write all the queries that they may face during the formation
of an Elderly SHG. Then all these points were discussed
thoroughly with the experience groups who deal with the
present Elderly SHGs.’
 Then, there was another group activity of building a net
with Woolen Threads. The participants again were divided
into three groups for performing the task.
 At the conclusion of the 1st Day of the Program, the
learning points shared by the participants are:
1. Group Activities and Coordination are very important in
working in a team
 2. There was learning that for the elderly group along with the 5
Principles of NRLM, we need two more principles for the
development of ESHGs.
3. The participants also learned about various issues that the
elderly faced in the society.
4. Along with this for solving these issues various strategies are
been discussed on the 1st day of the program.
