Key Concepts/
Understanding to be Developed: The basic tools to use in a basic sewing projects are classified as the following:
1. Measuring – tools use in taking measurements, examples: tape measure, sewing gauge, ruler, L-square, French
curve, curve ruler.
2. Cutting – refers to the tools used in trimming threads or cutting fabrics example:
Scissors, shears, ripper, and
3. Marking tools- tools used in leaving marks on the cloth or pattern, example: tailor’s chalk, pencil, carbon paper,
tracing wheel
4. Sewing tools- refers to the tools used in mending, sewing or uniting fabrics for the safety of the sewer. Example:
threads, pins, needles, thimble, pincushion, emery bag and the sewing box.

4.Procedures
4.1 Introductory Activity (5 min. ) Presenting the new lesson:
Ask: Which of the 3 basic needs of man is the most stylish? Clothes

Motivation:
Ask: Among the dresses, tailored and linens, which of the following fabrics are easier to construct? Lead their
answers to linen
Do you know the different tools and materials used in making the linens?
4.2 Activity (5 min.) A. Group work
A.
1. Assigned each group a set of sewing tools then show them the 3 chaptered power point presentation of Saring’s
Dream.
2. Answer the questions that follows.
a. What are the chapter all about?
b. What are the tools different tools mention in your assigned chapter?

Ask:
What are the 4 classification of tools and materials used in sewing?
What are the uses of each tools?
Discussion:
Sewing household linen are worthwhile hobby, encourages creativity but with the application of basic knowledge and
skills of sewing it can also be a means of livelihood or a way to augment family income.
Sewing basic principles have the following advantages: it’s easier to find job and offer many job opportunities here
and abroad.
First step in acquiring the said principles are the knowledge on classification of basic sewing tools with their uses as
follows:
1. Measuring – tools used in taking measurements and jotting measures on fabrics and patterns,
a. tape measure – a 60-inch measuring tool has a number on both sides, it is used in taking body measurements
b. sewing gauge – are made of piece of cardboard use in measuring and making hems and seam allowances uniform
c. Ruler/Yardstick/ meter stick – is used to measure fabric and to check grain line. It can be used in marking a long
straight lines and in measuring hem lengths
d. L-square - a tool useful in constructing perpendicular lines with divisional parts located in longer and shorter
arms
e. French curve - a tool used to smooth curved lines on patterns, typically at the collar, armhole, and neckline areas
f. Curve ruler/Hip Curve - is used in connecting or shaping slightly curve points like waist and hip curves. It has a
measure of inches at the front and centimeters at the back part.
2. Cutting – refers to the tools used in trimming threads or cutting fabrics
a. Shears, the cutting tool with more than 6” tall, having a different handle sizes, which is used mainly for cutting
cloth.
b. scissors, a cutting tool with less than 6” tall and in the same handle sizes.
c. pinking shears, a cutting tool having same characteristics of an ordinary shears but has a serrated blade, designed
to prevent the raveling of cloth edges
d. thread cutter, a cutting tool primarily used for trimming short threads left on cloth.
3. Marking tools- tools used in leaving marks on the cloth or pattern
a. Tailor's Chalk - a thin piece of hard chalk used in tailoring for making temporary marks on wrong side of fabrics.
b. Tracing Paper – a type of paper used to transfer markings from a pattern to cloth.
c. Tracing wheel - is a saw-toothed metal disk used to transfer markings from patterns to fabric
4. Sewing tools- refers to the tools used in mending, sewing or uniting fabrics for the safety of the sewer.
a. Needles – a sharp thin metal that are used for basting, sewing buttons on and when mending torn clothes.
b. Threads - a material used to pass through the cloth together with the needle
c. Pin Cushion - a cotton-stuffed cloth used to keep the pins and needles in place.
d. Pins - used hold cloth together during cutting and sewing it also helps save time in basting.
e. Thimble - made of either plastic or metal material w/c is used to protect the finger from being pricked by the
needle when sewing.
f. Emery Bag - used for thrusting needles and pins. They sharpen the needles and removes rust.
All put together in a Sewing Box that serves as a utility box which kept all the tools orderly
