To Southeast Texas
FALL 2011 An Advertising supplement to the BeAumont enterprise BeAumontenterprise.com
Southeast Texans love
to eat. Andto some, well
many really, it seems we
only love friedfood.
While there is slice of
truthto that, Southeast
Texas restaurants offer a lot
of alternatives. Inkeeping
withlocal taste buds influ-
encedby decades of Cajun
andTexMex cooking,
many restaurants feature
something to spice it up.
More thana fewrestau-
rants become known, as
are most Southeast Texans,
for being big onfamily. Its
not unusual to see mom
anddad, their kids andthe
grandkids all out together
for a meal.
Well likely overlook
someones favorite or two,
but here are a fewof our
observations about dining
out inSoutheast Texas.

For fine dining, The

Grill by Arfeen, Smith
andPayne, 6680 Calder
Ave., Beaumont, is onour
favorites withits casual
cabana bar andpatio, and
live music.
But it all really depends
ongreat foodweve en-
joyedChef Terry Bells reci-
pes for veal, rack of lamb
andbeef tenderloin. His
resume includes executive
chef at Isle of Capri, Delta
Downs andLauberge casi-
nos, HOB(House of Blues)
andwork withWolfgang
Pucks catering andevents
team.
Ambiance canbe im-
portant to a meal. Some-
They know, cater to our spirits, tastes

times, a little culture helps
as well. Still, its all about
the taste.
Two Magnolias at
the Southeast Texas Art
Museum, 500 MainSt.,
Beaumont, offers a change
of pace for lunch. Sur-
roundedby art canmake a
well preparedlunchmenu
soups, sandwiches and
saladfeel like something
more. After youfinished
your meal, youcanspend
some time withthe art.

Everyone has there

favorite. Sometimes thats
a problem. Take barbecue
restaurants.
We like a lot of them.
Others argue about who
has the best brisket or the
best sandwich, links or
pork. As long as it comes
witha large supply of nap-
kins, were not that fussy.
Most noteworthy about
most of the barbecue res-
taurants here is that every-
thing is freshly preparedin
the restaurant: the meat,
of course, the sides andthe
desert, if youhave room.
Some days, we wishwe
couldtake a barbecue road
trip. Dine at one for lunch,
another for dinner, and
endat another for desert.
We triedto make a list
of our favorites, but almost
wounduprepeating the
list we made of all of them.

Another discussion
about who offers the best
of a particular fare in
Southeast Texas wouldin-
volve Tex-Mex or Mexican
food.
Here is howwe see it: If
the salsa homemade each
day youcantell if it the
level of spice varies each
time youeat it if the
chips are thick andsturdy
to handle large amounts of
guacamole, salsa andque-
so, perhaps all at once and
the tortillas are homemade
to provide a nice base for
whatever your entree is,
well, we knowwell enjoy
our meal.
Andthere are plenty of
options inSoutheast Texas.

If youare hungry for a

taste of Asian-influenced
cuisine, headto 11thand
College streets inBeau-
mont. Withina half mile
of the intersectionthere
are four Chinese restau-
rants andanAsianmarket.
There also is a Vietnamese
restaurant inthe area.
Giventhe number of
cars inthe parking lot,
China Hut appears to have
a strong following. Taste of
China sits ina mint green
compound. China Garden
is housedinthe Gateway
Shopping Center. Szech-
uanChinese Restaurant
stands inhabits anoldTaco
Bell restaurant, but the
orange andblue paint job
gives the restaurant its own
identity.
Szechuans name
indicates the foodtakes
its influence fromSichuan
Province insouthwestern
China, one of the four tra-
ditions of Chinese cuisine.
Szechuanis knownfor
hot andspicy dishes. (And
inSoutheast Texas, spice
makes everything taste
better, right?)

About now, youthink

we forgot Cajuncooking.
Not true. We knowa lot of
youalready have your own
favorite chef inyoufamily
who does a crawfishboil.
Well list three of our
favorites that offer a good
alternative to your Cajun

NICKS GROCERY, INC.
On Saturday, December 30, 1899, seven local
businessmen gathered to discuss ways to forge
progress in Port Arthur. They knew it would take
a broadly based coalition of business and in-
dustry to support economic growth and a better
way of life for residents. Their community pride
created the Port Arthur Board of Trade.
Through a couple of name changes, that
group is now known as the Greater Port Arthur
Chamber of Commerce, one of the oldest
chambers in the United States. The forward
thinking of that group of seven continues today
in the group of approximately 680 businesses,
organizations and individuals that make up the
Greater Port Arthur Chamber of
Commerce.
Like all of Southeast Texas,
Port Arthur is a prominent com-
ponent of the oil and petrochemi-
cal business. Home to facilities
of the nations leaders in those
elds, many area businesses
thrive on service to those giants
of commerce. While planning for
the future, the area is diversify-
ing its economic base, seeking
new industries such as manufac-
turing opportunities.
Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce
The city of Groves is a quiet
community located 20 minutes
south of Beaumont. Residents
enjoy the exemplary school
district, a variety of churches
and the small town atmosphere.
Residents also enjoy Sabine
Lake, one of Texas best salt water
shing destinations, located just
5 minutes away. Groves is known
for the abundant pecan trees
that are located throughout the
community.

Nederland offers numerous
activities and places to visit. One
main point of interest is Neder-
lands downtown Boston Avenue.
With six blocks of shopping avail-
able it allows anyone to soak up
local avor. Old-fashioned shops
sell antiques, clothing and home
interior items. There even is a
homemade candle shop and a o-
rist. Everyone will enjoy strolling
down the brick-lined sidewalks to
soak up the view that includes
1800-era, cast-iron light posts
and benches.
Every spring, spectators from
the surrounding area come
out for the Nederland Heritage
Festival, also attracting revelers
from all over. The family oriented
festival has been held for more
than 30 years and aims to pro-
vide wholesome, fun community
entertainment. The festival has
delighted crowds with its week-
long events that include a chili
cook-off, treasure hunt, motor-
cycle show, carnival rides, games,
food and concerts.
The Annual Nederland Lighted
Christmas Parade is held the
second Tuesday in December with
over 100 entries. This night pa-
rade is one of the most unusual
and spectacular holiday events in
the region.
