sion. Sutherland also caught
a 26-yard scoring strike from
QB Nate Moon. Brad Rizzo
and Brian Noirot added
scores for the Rayders, while
Moon and Luke Klinger ran
in 2-point conversions.
J.J. Bottomley, Sam Eakes,
& Will Telgenhof all fnished
with six tackles each to lead
the defense, while Taylor
Seese, Andrew Mitchell,
Devin Largent, & Tanner
Seese all recovered fumbles.
Taylor Seese added a sack
and KeNen Borths blocked a
punt, as all 26 players were in
on tackle for the Rayders.
is win was a great way to
end the season, said Coach
Doug Waha. Im very proud
of the way our sophomores
stepped up this season, and
am happy they could end
their junior varsity career
with a big win. Im also
proud of our freshmen, who
improved every week, and
played a big part of us having
a successful season.
Rayders win back and forth season fnale

Charlevoix 28, Kalkaska 26
KALKASKA e
Charlevoix Rayders fnished
the season on a positive note,
coming away with a 28-26
Lake Michigan Conference
victory on October 21.
Janael Kelly ran for 125
yards on 17 attempts and sen-
ior Andrew Potter rushed for
102 yards on 22 carries and
scored a pair of touchdowns to
lead the Rayder oense.
"It was nice for our seniors
to go out on a winning note,
Charlevoix coach Don Jess
said. Kalkaska battled hard
and it was a back and forth
game, we had several kids step
up and make plays when we
needed them, this team had its
ups and downs, but always
played hard and I'm proud of
them."
e Rayders jumped out to
an early 12-0 lead, but then the
Blazers came roaring back by
scoring 20 unanswered points
before Charlevoix was able to
stop the onslaught.
Charlevoix responded with a
Potter 2-yard touchdown and a
Jamael Kelly conversion to tie
the contest 20-20, before the
Blazers tacked on another
touchdown to take a 26-20 ad-
vantage heading into the fnal
quarter.
Charlie Hamilton took a 6-
yard pass from Tanner Catt to
even the score at 26, and Kelly
punched in the conversion for
the fnal score of the night.
Charlevoixs Marc Durkee
preserved the Rayder victory
with an interception with just
over a minute remaining in the
game.
I thought our oensive line
did a great job and Andrew
Potter and Jamael Kelly ran
hard and did a nice job of pro-
tecting the ball, Jess noted.
Tanner Catt managed the
game well from the QB posi-
tion, and defensively, Marc
Durkee once again came up
with a big interception for us at
the end.
Catt fnished 7-of-20 passing
for 65 yards, while Hamilton
was the reciepant of fve of
those passes for 43 yards and
the TD.
Myles Kerr also got into the
scoring act as he crossed the
goal line on a fumble recovery
that he took back 43 yards.
Leading the defense was
Coby Herriman with nine
tackles, Greyson Speigle had
seven, and Andrew Robarge
and Josh Hogan fnished with
six each.

Elk Rapids 34, Boyne City

BOYNE CITY Boyne
City held a 24-14 advan-
tage with just under nine
minutes to go in the third
quarter but could not hold
on as the Elks rallied to
claim a 34-24 Lake Michi-
gan Conference victory at
Earl Brotherston Field on
October 21.
The Elks got on the
board first to go up 7-0
early in the opening quar-
ter, before the Ramblers re-
sponded with a pair of
touchdowns, the first on a
90 pass from Jay Redman
to TJ Douglas, and Red-
man punching it in himself
from 12 yards out. Both
Rambler conversion at-
tempts were unsuccessful.
Elk Rapids got back on
top 14-12 midway through
the second quarter, before
Boyne City responded with
48.6 seconds to go in the
half as Bradley Fouchia
hauled in a tipped pass
from Redman to put the
Ramblers up, 18-14 at in-
termission.
Boyne City came out in
the third quarter and got
on the board once again as
Redman found Keegan
LaBlance for a 36 yard
scoring strike to give the
Ramblers a 24-14 advan-
tage.
After that, it was all Elks,
as they climbed to within
24-21 on an Ed Shaw run
with 5:42 remaining in the
third and he tacked on the
go-ahead score with 18
seconds remaining in the
quarter.
The final scoring of the
night came at 6:09 of the
fourth as Elk Rapids
Collin Wilcox pounded his
way in from 5-yards out
for a 34-24 advantage.
It was a good, competi-
tive contest, Boyne City
coach Don Nohel said.
Unfortunately, we came
out on the wrong end of
the score, and we didnt
capitalize on all of our op-
portunities.
Their defensive line
controlled the line of
scrimmage, and we werent
able to run the ball like we
thought we would be able
to, Nohel noted. We had
a lot of young kids this
year and they battled hard
all year, they are a resilient
group.
Redman was 9-of-21
passing for 168 yards and
three scores in addition to
the rushing TD to lead
Boyne, while Conner Mills
paced the ground game
with 27 yards on 13 at-
tempts, and Zach Wandrie
added 20 yards on four
carries.
Skyler Davis led the
Rambler defense with 10
tackles, while Trey Rein-
hardt and Collin Ulvund
each had nine tackles, and
Redman chipped in with
eight.
Boyne finishes the sea-
son with a 4-5 overall
record, 3-4 conference.

East Jordan 26, Harbor
Springs 22
HARBOR SPRINGS e
East Jordan Red Devils ended
the season on a very high note,
as they were able to overcome
a 22-13 defcit with 2:35 to go
and turn it into a 26-22 season
ending victory on October 21,
and ending a 26-game skid
that dated back to the 2008
season.
What a game, East Jordan
coach Allan Peterson said. We
battled till the end, and they
earned the result.
Harbor Springs opened the
scoring in the frst quarter to
go up 7-0, and extended that to
a 14-7 lead going into halime.
e Red Devil score came on a
13-yard pass from sophomore
Noah Bacchus to Dustin Mel-
lios. Harbor added another
score with 5:26 le in the third
quarter to make it 22-7.
ats when things started to
go the Red Devils way. Sopho-
more Ben Walton recovered a
Rams fumble in Harbor
Springs territory at the 2:40
mark and a few plays later,
sophomore Tim Schutt raced
24-yards for a touchdown to
pull East Jordan to within 22-
13.
e score would stay that
way until Bacchus connected
again with Mellios for their
second 13-yard touchdown
with 2:35 remaining in the
game, bringing East Jordan to
within a feld goal, at 22-19.
With the crowd getting into
it, the East Jordan defense, be-
hind the leadership of Wyatt
Werner and a slew of Red Dev-
ils, they were able to force a
Ram fumble, the ball shot up
in the air and into the out-
stretched arms of senior John
Richards, who corralled the
ball and raced 48 yards to pay-
dirt to put East Jordan up 25-
22 with 1:43 remaining. Josh
Rathbun booted the extra
point for a 26-22 lead and
what would be the fnal scor-
ing of the night.
East Jordan improved to 1-8
overall, 1-6 conference with
the victory.
e Red Devils were led of-
fensively by Werner, who
rushed for 93 yards on nine
carries, and Schutt who
pounded out 69 hard fought
yards on 11 carries and a score.
Bacchus, the sophomore quar-
terback, threw for 48 yards.
Mellios fnished with three re-
ceptions, for 46 yards and a
pair of touchdowns.
Noah did a good job in
there, Peterson said. He
made good decisions and
threw the ball well. Our oen-
sive line, which includes three
sophomores, gave him the
time he needed as well.
Defensively, Walton was a
wrecking machine, as he
recorded 20 tackles on the
night, while Richards and Mel-
lios each chipped in with 12
apiece. Marcus Wingate had
11, and Rathbun, Josh John-
ston and Zach Shepard all fn-
ished with six tackles each.
Were real proud of the
kids, Peterson noted. All the
adversity they went through,
we needed the win, this is
something we can build on
and go forward. I enjoyed
working with the seniors, they
were fun, and we are going to
miss them, and Im glad they
stayed with it.

Many houses and apartments
built before 1978 have paint that
contains high levels of lead (called
leadbased paint). Lead from paint,
chips, and dust can pose serious
health hazards if not taken care of
properly.
If you suspect that your house
has lead hazards, you can take some
immediate steps to reduce your
family's risk:
Clean up paint chips immedi-
ately.
Clean foors, window frames,
window sills, and other surfaces
weekly. Use a mop, sponge, or paper
towel with warm water and a gen-
eral all-purpose cleaner or a cleaner
made specifcally for lead.
oroughly rinse sponges and
mop heads aer cleaning dirty or
dusty areas.
Wash children's hands oen, es-
pecially before they eat and before
nap and bed time.
Keep play areas clean. Wash
bottles, pacifers, toys, and stued
animals regularly.
Keep children from chewing
window sills or other painted sur-
faces.
Clean or remove shoes before
entering your home to avoid track-
ing in lead from soil.
Make sure children eat nutri-
tious, low-fat meals high in iron
and calcium.
In addition to day-to-day clean-
ing and good nutrition:
You can temporarily reduce
lead hazards by taking actions such
as repairing damaged painted sur-
faces and planting grass to cover
soil with high lead levels.
To permanently remove lead
hazards, you must hire a certifed
lead "abatement" contractor. Abate-
ment (or permanent hazard elimi-
nation) methods include removing,
sealing, or enclosing lead-based
paint with special materials. Just
painting over the hazard with regu-
lar paint is not enough.
When remodeling your home it
is particularly important to be
aware of lead-based paint and take
the proper measures to keep your
family safe. If not conducted prop-
erly, certain types of renovations
can release lead from paint and dust
into the air.an already dicult situ-
ation.
