Richard Cory

BY EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,

We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,

And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
“Good-morning,” and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich—yes, richer than a king—

And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,

And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,

Went home and put a bullet through his head.

t’s little wonder that pilot’s watches have always fascinated
gentlemen of taste and style, no matter how earthbound. In
the plainest terms, the wristwatch owes its very existence to
pilots; specifically pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto San-
tos-Dumont, who commissioned the very first one from Cartier in
1904. The stylish inventor wanted to be able to look at the time
without removing his hands from the controls of his aircraft, pocket
watches being too cumbersome while performing maneuvers in
midair.
While pilot’s watches have since evolved into, in some cases,
complex machines for performing all sorts of calculations and func-
tions, it’s their essential utility (why collectors call them “tool”
watches) that remains a large part of the appeal. And they’ve always
been at the forefront of innovation, since Santos-Dumont’s time.
The iconic Rolex GMT-Master for instance was initially created for
Pan-Am pilots flying new transatlantic routes who needed to keep
track of two time zones simultaneously.

Pilot’s watches are the focus of Air Time: Watches Inspired by Avia-
tion, Aeronautics and Pilots, a fascinating new book from Rizzoli that
is the latest release in the Timepiece series created by Aaron Sig-
mond. In a comprehensive and beautifully-illustrated look at nearly
a century of aviation-inspired watches, beginning with Santos-Du-
mont’s Cartier, author Mark Bernardo offers in-depth looks at pi-
lot’s important timepieces.
These include Charles Lindbergh’s invention of the Longines
Hour Angle; the Omega Speedmaster, which became the first
watch worn on the moon; the Breitling Navitimer, which incorpo-
rates a slide rule in its bezel; and the Breguet Type XX, designed in
the 1950s for the French naval air army. He also holds forth on more strict international criteria—e.g., water resistance, unidirectional

As Captain Jim
“Guido” DiMatteo, a former TOPGUN Commander who spent
nearly 30 years flying fighter jets for the U.S. Navy, writes in the
book’s foreword, “Time has played an important role in aviation
since the Wright Brothers’ first flight nearly 120 years ago. Nowa-
days, our jets have sophisticated avionics systems with embedded
satellite-synchronized clocks, but fighter pilots use our wristwatch-
es before, during, and after our flights.”
For most aviators, DiMatteo notes, “the timepiece of choice is
the mechanical watch. There are many reasons why, but for me, one
of the most important is the emotional connection. Mine not only
reminds me of the brilliant heritage of fighter aviation, but of my fa-
ther, a naval aviator and fighter pilot from 1940 to 1970. He adored
his mechanical watch and wore it every day. I recall it was always
pretty banged up and scratched; he even wore it with the watch’s
face on the underside of his
wrist to minimize damage.”
DiMatteo’s personal
choice of timepiece is the

MILTON FRIEDMAN’S MONOPOLY THEORY

Some of the most impactful economists and business minds of the modern era aren’t as critical of
the way Rockefeller and Standard Oil handled their business as was the Supreme Court. Milton
Friedman, the famous economist and leader of the Chicago school of economic theory, once ex-
plained the complexity of such a broad term as monopoly, writing, “Exchange is truly voluntary
only when nearly equivalent alternatives exist. Monopoly implies the absence of alternatives and
thereby inhibits effective freedom of exchange. In practice monopoly, frequently if not generally,
arises from government support or from collusive agreements among individuals… however mo-
nopoly may also arise because it is technically efficient to have a single producer or enterprise.”
Friedman explained that “When technical conditions make a monopoly the natural outcome
of competitive market forces, there are only three alternatives that seem available: private mo-
nopoly, public monopoly or public regulation. All three are bad so we must choose among evils.”
Thus, Friedman points out that while there may be problems in capitalism caused by monopo-
lies, there are few viable options to prevent them. Many experts also note that while encouraging
competition and thus lowering prices is the goal of antitrust laws, Standard Oil actually lowered
prices while dominating the market and exerting its control over the entire production, refine-
ment and sale of their product. In other words: Rockefeller was right.

camera inside out, study different kinds of lighting and understand
what each can give you, and, when you’ve learned all of that, it opens
doors creatively.”
Watson is best known for his portraits of everyone from Alfred
Hitchcock to Steve Jobs and Kate Moss. “Very often, for a portrait
shot, you’re trying to control people’s emotions to put them towards
what you want in the image,” he relates. “You give them roles to play

He also goes into technical details like lighting, making this a

of strobes, tungsten light and HMI lights,” he notes, “but, every so
often, I have a mad kind of love affair with natural light. I did a lot of
my early work with natural light, but I only began to reconsider using
it at the end of the 1980s. In 1993, I did a shoot for a whole day with
Kate Moss under natural light, at times with just a little bit of strobe.
It was the only time I ever worked with her, and it made for some
amazing pictures. We did the shoot in a villa in Morocco called Dar
Tamsna. She was an up-and-coming model at the time and flew down
from London. It was for German Vogue…. [and] at the very end, she
told me it was her 19th birthday that day.”
He later returned to Morocco several times, and it became one of
his best-known locations. “The Morocco project was a huge one for
me, and it emphasizes a lot of the things I’ve been saying about the
importance of preparation and inspiration,” he relates. “Not letting
the technical get in the way of the creative, seeing the individual when
taking their portrait, controlling light, always keeping your eyes open,
and, most importantly, looking for memorability…. Everything in
photography is a delicate balance. You have to work very hard, but if
you truly want to be a photographer and you’re passionate about it,
your passion should absolutely carry you through.”
Good photographers, he concludes, “learn to look inside their
photos. When I was starting out, I’d have a vision in my head of a
shot; I just didn’t have enough experience to carry it out. But your
photography will get better the more you do it. In the beginning, you
need to be shooting a hundred pictures a day, just keep shooting, keep
shooting and analyzing the picture. Put it on a wall, stare at it, go to
sleep looking at it, and then, when you wake up in the morning, have
another look. Then put it in a drawer and pull it out a week later, be-
cause great photography has to stand the test of time. You should be
equally proud of an image you took 20 years ago as of one you took
today.”

hosting the insanely-popular internet clip show that features Last October, she released her first LP, America’s Sweetheart,
featuring 19 songs exploring the full range of her musical abilities.
While half the tracks were written before the pandemic, the rest
were conjured under lockdown when installing a home stu-
dio. “White Picket Fence” is an autobiographical track that sets
the record straight about her difficult path to success.
Another single, “Vinyl,” demonstrates a vocal range that might
surprise some. “I’ve never put out a song fully singing like that. A
lot of people expected to hear only rapping coming from me.
With ‘Vinyl,’ you can really see the artist that I am, that I can do a
lot more.”
While Ridiculousness is steady work, the show’s equally ridicu-
lous schedule leaves her no time to tour, other than one-off ap-
pearances like the one she did opening for Cardi B in New Or-
leans. Chanel however met Cardi for the first time at Fashion
Week. “We were backstage, and they were like, ‘Cardi! Chanel!
Get a picture together!”. “She literally grabbed me by my ass! She
was friendly and sweet.”
An industry veteran, Chanel seldom gets starstruck by the long
stream of celebs guest starring on Ridiculousness however. While
many of them are the hottest and newest acts in music, she’s par-
tial to old-school names like Kelly Rowland. “I grew up perform-
ing Destiny’s Child in a bunch of talent shows, so she was one of
my idols as a kid,” Chanel recalls in a misty moment. “So I got a
little teary-eyed [when I met her]. ‘I’ve been performing you since
I was in the sixth grade!’”
With new music dropping this summer, Chanel is currently
working on a collection of more new music for her upcoming
presently untitled album. Chanel, who has over 10 million follow-
ers across social media platforms, moves two steps closer to her
ultimate goal: a smash single.
“You kind of see it as a more attainable thing when you grow up
in a city like Los Angeles,” she says about her music career. “I
didn’t know how hard it would be. It’s been one of the hardest,
longest journeys I’ve ever been on. It’s my passion, and no matter
what, even if I never get a hit single, I’m going to keep making
music. But, I like to say I think that big hit is right around the

The finished product, which “preserves Dewar’s signature

says of lessons learned in the music business. “It’s hard to find genuine

What happened in the meantime was life, just more of it—
marrying Shumpert, having two baby girls, including her
second, Rue, with whom she was pregnant during the pan-
demic while assembling her latest album titled, The Album,
which landed number one on Billboard’s R&B charts when it
came out last year. In a rave review, Entertainment Weekly de-
scribed her voice as, “nimble, capable of simmering, deep-
toned seduction, flirtatious wisps, and soaring balladry in
turns.”
And while hip-hop is all good, in the true Hollywood tra-
dition, what Teyana really wants to do is direct. And direct
she does—music videos, under her alter ego, Spike Tey/Tee.
Some of them feature herself with guest stars like Ghostface
Killah, Method Man and Raekwon on “Gonna Love Me
(Remix),” and others feature artists like Macy Gray.
“Honestly, directing is one of the best things that I’ve ever
done, and one of my favorite things in my career that I’m do-

working with her all-female production company on videos.

“I can’t just get up and go to Target,” she says about life in
the bubble of a reality TV series. “I have to get up and know
that there’s three cameras and a whole production team, and
they got to go and get it approved and all that other stuff that
comes with it.”
Then why do it? Because it brings unexpected joys, like
capturing all your family’s most cherished moments, espe-
cially the ones you’re too busy to be there for.
“My baby, Rue, she took her first crawl on camera. And
Junie, her first day back to school,” Teyana grins at the
thought of it. “Usually my lens is on everybody else. It feels
good for the lens to be on me and my family so I can look

as a director, I did a good job balancing careers, balance

nodding with satisfaction. “Life happens, and no regret in
that. I love every bit of it.”

or this year’s Hot 100
portfolio, we chose to re-
evaluate our criteria for
the dawn of a new era.
While the list has previously con-
sisted almost entirely of models, the
balance of pulchritudinal power has
shifted. While physical beauty is
still an important part of the equa-
tion, our attraction algorithm takes
many more factors into account.
From athletes to entrepreneurs, en-
tertainers and influencers, these
women represent the leading lights
in their chosen endeavors, setting
an example for us all. Change is a
good thing, we think you’ll agree.
