1. Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu elected as the 22nd President of
Bangladesh
Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu has been elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh. He
was nominated for the post by the ruling Awami League. No other party or individual filed a
nomination for the post. He will replace President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, whose tenure will
be ended on April 23, 2023. Abdul Hamid served as President for two consecutive terms of five
years. The Bangladesh constitution does not allow any person to hold the President's post
beyond two terms.

2. The annual festival of the National School of Drama, 'Bharat Rang


Mahotsav,' will begin in New Delhi.
On 14 February 2022, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Culture, has inaugurated the
22nd 'Bharat Rang Mahotsav-2023 in New Delhi's Kamani Auditorium. This yearly event is
expected to draw over 100 theatre companies. The concluding ceremony will take place on
February 26th in Kevadia. 'Bharat Rang Mahotsav’ aspires to enhance international
collaborations and cultural exchange programmes with other countries.

3. The Supreme Court of India has upheld the creation of the J&K
delimitation commission.
The Supreme Court maintained the federal government's right to hold Jammu and Kashmir
delimitation on 14 February, dismissing a petition challenging the Centre's decision to form a
delimitation committee to redraw legislative assembly and Lok Sabha seats in the Union
Territory. The apex court has also noted that the constitutionality of the exercise of authority
under Article 370 is the subject of petitions before the Supreme Court.

4. The government has formed a high-level committee to modify the


parameters for the operationalization of the Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax ferry
transportation service.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will host the Defence Ministers' Conclave in Bengaluru on the
sidelines of Aero India 2023. The Committee, chaired by Deendayal Port Authority, will
investigate ground realities such as vessel safety requirements, excess passenger boarding
control mechanisms, an online ticketing system, and the incorporation of new and developing
technology.

5. Retail inflation in India increased to 6.52% in January, following a two-
month low of less than 6%.
Annual retail inflation in India again exceeded the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) upper tolerance
level in January, reaching a three-month high of 6.52%, owing mostly to rising prices in the food
basket, which includes grains and protein-rich goods.
Since January 2022, retail inflation has been over the RBI's upper tolerance target of 6%, with
the exception of November and December 2022. In October 2022, the previous high was 6.77%.

6. The death toll from the Turkey-Syria earthquake has surpassed 35,000
people.
A week after a terrible 7.6 magnitude earthquake devastated Turkey and Syria, the death toll
has risen to 34,179, according to the most recent estimates.

7. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed an outbreak of


Marburg disease.
The World Health Organization announced the first-ever epidemic of Marburg disease in
Equatorial Guinea, blaming the Ebola-related virus for at least nine deaths. After sending
samples from Equatorial Guinea to a lab in Senegal last week, the health department verified
the outbreak.

8. New Zealand announces a National State of Emergency, after being struck


by Cyclone Gabrielle.
For the third time in its history, New Zealand issued a National State of Emergency on 14
February (Tuesday) as Cyclone Gabrielle battered the North Island with wind and rain, knocking
out power to tens of thousands of households.
According to the New Zealand Meteorological Service, wind gusts of over 140 kilometres per
hour (87 miles per hour) were reported along the coast, with waves reaching 11 metres (36 feet)
high near the Bay of Islands.

9. Zoox, Amazon's self-driving car division, tests robotaxi on public roads


with workers as passengers.

10. In the Women's T20 World Cup in Cape Town, India defeated Pakistan by
7 wickets.
India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in the Women's Cricket T20 World Cup at Newlands in Cape
Town, South Africa. Chasing a goal of 150 runs, India scored 151 runs in 19 overs for the loss of
three wickets.

11. India will compete in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in
2023.
17 countries will play in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023. India is in Group
B, along with Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kazakhstan. The Badminton Asia Mixed
Team Championships 2023 will be held from February 14 to 19 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in
the United Arab Emirates.
