Department: CE/ CSE/ ME/ ECE/ Tutorial sheet no: 1
EE/ CHE/ METALLURY Semester: I
Course Title: Introduction to Mechanical Systems
Course Code: 22 MET 101
Unit/ Title: Steam operated systems

Learning Objective: To identify the phase of the working fluid using steam tables and property diagrams, and
to calculate the heat and work exchange due to the change of state.

1. Determine whether the working fluid is a sub-cooled liquid, saturated liquid, wet vapor, dry
saturated, or superheated in the following cases. If the state lies in sub-cooled region, then
find the corresponding degree of sub-cooling; if it lies in wet region, then find the
corresponding dryness fraction; and if the state lies in superheated region, then find the
corresponding degree of superheat.
(i) Steam at 10 bar with 0.175 m3/kg specific volume
(ii) Steam at 15 bar and 220 oC

2. Steam at 50 bar and 500 oC expands isentropically to a pressure of 1 bar in a turbine. If steam
flows at a rate of 200 kg/min, determine (i) Phase of the working fluid at turbine exit (ii) Power
developed by the turbine. Compare the results obtained from steam tables & Mollier diagram.

3. A spherical vessel, having a capacity of 0.85 m3, contains steam at 12 bar with a dryness of
0.95. Using a pressure release valve, some steam is blown off until the pressure drops to 6 bar.
Steam pressure drops further to 4 bar due to spontaneous cooling of the vessel. Treating
steam blow-off as a throttling process, determine (i) Quantity of blown-off steam (ii) Steam
quality after spontaneous cooling of vessel (iii) Heat lost by the steam due to cooling.

4. Superheated steam flowing at 10 kg/s, 5 bar and 300 oC expands in a turbine until pressure
drops to 0.1 bar. If the steam quality is 0.95 at turbine exit, find the power generated by the
turbine and determine whether the process is reversible or irreversible.

5. Exhaust steam from a turbine, at 38 oC and 0.95 dryness, enters a condenser at a rate of 2500
kg/hr. If water temperature at the condenser exit is 30 oC, determine the rate at which cooling
water should be supplied to the condenser to allow maximum temperature rise of 10 oC. The
specific heat of water is 4186 J/kg K.

6. Steam at 10 bar and 300 oC expands reversibly and adiabatically in a nozzle until its pressure
reduces to 2 bar. If the flow velocity at nozzle inlet is 50 m/s, determine the exit velocity.
