for Language Students and Students Planning to

Study Abroad in Summer or Fall 2024

1. Log into the UWM scholarship portal (uwm.academicworks.com). Complete your

general scholarship application or update it from a previous year. You should delete old
information to present the best application.
2. Complete the application for any individual scholarship(s) you wish to apply to. If
you cannot scan or click the QR, search by scholarship name while in the portal.

Unless noted otherwise, the DEADLINE is MARCH 1 - the same deadline to apply at CIE for
study abroad for summer or fall 2024.

Berquist Study Abroad Scholarship and the general Study Abroad Scholarship –
Valued between $1,000 and $2,500
• Any major studying abroad in Summer or Fall 2024 at any non-U.S. destination
• Preference for students with demonstrated financial need and first generation student
• Minimum 3.0 GPA

Giovanni Carini Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

• Any student studying Italian language at UWM (does not have to be major or minor)
• Studying abroad in Italy in Summer or Fall 2024
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA

Leah Fetter Merit Scholarship – $1,000

• French major studying in a French-speaking country in Summer or Fall 2024
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA

Ian J. Elliot Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

• Global Studies or International Studies major
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
 Hilda Becher Scholarship in Spanish – Valued at $1,000
• Spanish major or minor participating in the Madrid Summer 2024 program Summer
2024
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Donald R. Shea Scholarship in Latin American Studies – $500 (Deadline April 1,

2024)
• Demonstrated academic interest in Latin American/Caribbean Studies through
coursework / research
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Studying abroad in Latin America or the Caribbean or participating in a virtual study
abroad in Latin America or the Caribbean in Summer or Fall 2024
Schwertfeger Scholarship – Valued between $1,000 and $5,000
• Any major studying the German language (preference given to German majors or
minors)
• Studying abroad in Germany in Summer or Fall 2024
• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship – amount varies

• Full-time student in any major
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
• First generation student or other barriers to study abroad
