LEVEL 3 POWER SYSTEMS ASSIGNMENT 1

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT: DUE DATE 26 NOVEMBER 2023

Question 1

Question 2

2b) As a consultant Engineer, you have been requested to profer solutions to reduce a
manufacturing plant’s maximum demand(MD), besides regulating the power factor.
Provide three solutions and the rationale behind them
Question 3

3b) Describe the importance of the inductive reactance and resistance of a line in voltage
control and its use in a line drop compensator system. Using formulas and diagrams describe
how a line drop compensator system regulates the receiving end voltage

Question 4

i) Describe comprehensively by use of diagrams and derivations the operation of

a) Static var compensators

b) OLTC (Onload tap changer)

ii) A (medium) single phase transmission line 100 km long has the following constants :
Resistance/km/phase = 0·15Ω Inductive reactance/km/phase = 0·377 Ω Capacitive
reactance/km/phase = 31·87 Ω Receiving end line voltage = 132 kV Assuming that the total
capacitance of the line is localised at the receiving end alone, determine :

(i) sending end current

(ii) line value of sending end voltage
(iii) regulation
(iv) Sending end power factor The line is delivering 72 MW at 0·8 p.f. lagging.
