Unit 5: Introduction to Exponential Functions

Class: Algebra

Grade Level: 8th Grade

Teacher: Ms. Hanson

Time Required: 46 minutes (1:44-2:30 per class schedule)

Objectives
 Students will be able to compare growth patterns using calculations and graphs.
o Student facing goal: Let’s choose the better deal.

Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)

 Warm Up – Students will attempt the 1.1 Warm Up from their Unit 5 packet on their own (5 minutes)
o The following slide displays the problem that they will be working on, after a few minutes of
working independently, begin a whole group discussion sharing their work.
o Note: This provides a visual to help with the next problem.

Teaching: Activities (30 minutes)

 1.2 A Genie in a Bottle – page 2 of Unit 5 packet (15 minutes)
o Have a volunteer dramatically read the scenario (pasted below). Poll the class to see which purse
they would choose: A or B?
o Have students work with the people at their tables through problems 1-3 before bringing the class
together to discuss their findings. (5 minutes)
 If needed to get the students started, prompt them to create expressions for each purse.
o Discuss the strategies that we could use to compare growth.
 1.3 Graphing the Genie’s Offer (15 minutes)
o Have a reader read the paragraph (pasted below).

o Then, have students discuss with their tables questions 1-5 before coming together to discuss. (5
minutes)
o Calculations vs. Graph: which is better? Does it depend on the scenario?
Closure (10 minutes/ End of Class)
 Cool Down – Are you ready for more? On page 4 of their Unit 5 packet (3 minutes)

o Ask the students: Knowing what you know now, which purse would you choose? Why?
 Big Idea: Students will analyze what’s “the better deal” of a linear and exponential function when
looking at the two over time.
o In these examples, we can see that over time, the exponential function (Purse B) is a better deal,
but within the first 18 days, our linear function (Purse A) would be the better deal.
 Getting to Know Ms. Hanson… Kahoot (7 minutes)
o This is my introductory take over for Algebra at the beginning of their new unit so to begin we will
be playing this Kahoot: https://create.kahoot.it/share/getting-to-know-ms-hanson/9471935e-cce9-
