Unit 5: Introduction to Exponential Functions
Class: Algebra
Objectives
Students will be able to compare growth patterns using calculations and graphs.
o Student facing goal: Let’s choose the better deal.
o Then, have students discuss with their tables questions 1-5 before coming together to discuss. (5
minutes)
o Calculations vs. Graph: which is better? Does it depend on the scenario?
Closure (10 minutes/ End of Class)
Cool Down – Are you ready for more? On page 4 of their Unit 5 packet (3 minutes)
o Ask the students: Knowing what you know now, which purse would you choose? Why?
Big Idea: Students will analyze what’s “the better deal” of a linear and exponential function when
looking at the two over time.
o In these examples, we can see that over time, the exponential function (Purse B) is a better deal,
but within the first 18 days, our linear function (Purse A) would be the better deal.
