Tutorial Week 03: MS2220 – Introduction to Fluid Mechanics

Collaborative Learning
Date: 1 February 2023. 17:00-19:00

1. A student accidentally drove his car into the pool at FTMD. His car sinks under the water
and lands on the bottom of the pool with a distance of 4 ft from the water surface to the
top of the car’s door. The door can be approximated as 36 in. wide and 40 in. high and
has hinges on the vertical side. The water level inside the car is up to midheight of the
door and the air inside the car is at atmospheric pressure. Calculate the force (in lb) he
needs to put to push the car open at 24 in. from the hinge line. What should he do to
lower the force he needs to use to open the door?

2. A manometer with a tube inclined at θ degrees from the horizontal line, as shown in the
following figure. The large (D) and small (d) tube diameters are 100 and 8 mm. If the
liquid deflection L must be five times larger than the total deflection of a regular U-tube
manometer, what is inclination θ should be? Evaluate the sensitivity of this inclined-tube
manometer.
